The Dragoon is the Melee Battle Job infused with the power of the ancient dragons.

Dragoon is a Melee Battle Job that has been in the game since the early days of A Realm Reborn. Players will start out as a level 1 Lancer, before finally switching to become a Dragoon once they hit level 30.

Although Dragoon is introduced in A Realm Reborn, it truly shines when the first major expansion, Heavensward, came about. This is because this expansion’s story focuses a lot on Dragoons and the battle between the humans and the dragons.

As a Melee Battle Job, the Dragoon’s main objective is, of course, to deal damage to their enemies. However, they also have specific skills and abilities that allow them to have and serve party utility and bring other benefits to their party members aside from pure damage.

Because of this, this article will discuss ten of the most powerful and useful Dragoon’s skills and abilities.

10. Spineshatter Dive

A video describing how to do rotation as a Dragoon. See Spineshatter Dive in action at 10:22.

Spineshatter Dive is the first ability skill to be featured in this article. It is a very useful ability that can crush the enemy’s defences.

Why Spineshatter Dive is Great:

  • Spineshatter Dive is an ability skill that, when executed, will deal damage to the chosen enemy with a potency of 250.
  • In addition, Dragoons will also have two charges of Spineshatter Dive, with each one recharging for a rather short cooldown of 60 seconds. This makes this ability able to be used quite often on the battlefield.
  • Better yet, Dragoons can also execute this skill between their GCD attacks. This means that Dragoons can easily weave this ability in between their GCD attacks, allowing for extra damage on top of their usual combo rotation.

9. Life Surge

A video describing how to play as a Dragoon. See Life Surge in action at  3:40.

Life Surge is the second ability skill to be featured in this article. Unlike Spineshatter Dive, however, Life Surge is more towards a support ability that can help increase the Dragoon’s damage instead of dealing damage directly.

Why Life Surge is Great:

  • Life Surge is a buff that the Dragoons must use often as it can definitely increase their damage dealt towards the enemy ranks. This is because using Life Surge will give the Dragoon a buff that will ensure critical damage to be dealt for the next weapon skill the Dragoons execute after they activate Lifesurge.
  • Additionally, it will also absorb a portion of damage dealt using Life Surge as the Dragoon’s own HP. Not only that, Dragoons will also have two charges of Life Surge, with each one refilling every 45 seconds.
  • On top of that, Life Surge can also be weaved in between the Dragoon’s usual GCD rotations. Meaning that, to execute Life Surge, Dragoons will not have to interrupt their own GCD attack and can easily weave it in to further increase their damage thanks to Life Surge’s buff.

8. Lance Charge

A video describing Dragoon’s skills in detail from 1 to 90. See Lance Charge in action at 7:05

Lance Charge is the third ability skill to be featured in this article. Similar to Life Surge, Lance Charge is not an offensive skill but rather a support skill that will help increase damage dealt.

Why Lance Charge is Great:

  • Lance Charge, like Life Surge, is also another buff that can help increase the Dragoon’s damage towards the enemy ranks. However, it differs from Life Surge primarily because Lance Charge will buff multiple attacks instead of only one.
  • When using Lance Charge, Dragoons will have a buff that will increase their damage dealt by 10% for 20 seconds. Not to mention, Lance Charge also has a rather short cooldown of 60 seconds, meaning that Dragoons can use this buff every minute.
  • Not only that, Lance Charge is also another ability that Dragoons can easily weave in between their usual GCD attacks. This means that Dragoons can have easy access to the buff that will increase their damage dealt without interrupting their combo.

7. Battle Litany

Battle Litany is the next ability skill to be featured in this article. Similar to Life Surge and Lance Charge, Battle Litany is another support skill.

Why Battle Litany is Great:

  • Battle Litany is a very good support ability skill. This is because not only is it incredibly important to Dragoons, it will also be important to the Dragoon’s party members, serving as the Dragoon’s main party utility skill.
  • Battle Litany, when activated, will give a buff to the Dragoon as well as their party members that will increase their critical hit rate by 10% for 15 seconds. This will allow the Dragoon and their party members to be able to get more critical damage out towards the enemies.
  • Not to mention, Battle Litany is also another ability skill that can be executed between the Dragoon’s usual GCD attacks. This makes it so that Battle Litany can easily be activated without interrupting the Dragoon’s combo.

Dragonsight is also another one of the Dragoon’s support ability skills that is extremely useful.

Why Dragonsight is Great:

  • Dragonsight is a very useful support skill both for the Dragoon as well as for the Dragoon’s partner. To be able to execute Dragonsight, the Dragoon is able to choose one party member to share the Dragonsight with and create a link form between them.
  • Using Dragonsight will grant a buff ‘Right Eye’ to the Dragoon, which will increase the Dragoon’s damage dealt towards the enemy ranks by 10% for a total of 20 seconds.
  • Additionally, it will also grant ‘Left Eye’ to the chosen party member when executing Dragonsight. Left Eye will grant a 5% increase of damage dealt towards said party member for 20 seconds.

5. Mirage Dive

A video describing reasons why one should play Dragoon. See Mirage Dive in action at 4:10.

Mirage Dive is the next skill to be featured in this article. Unlike most of the previous abilities and skills, Mirage Dive is an offensive ability skill of the Dragoon.

Why Mirage Dive is Great:

  • Mirage Dive is an ability skill that can only be executed once the player executes High Jump, which will grant them a buff called ‘Dive Ready’. This indicates that Mirage Dive can now be used.
  • Mirage Dive, when used, will deal a jumping attack with a 200 attack potency towards the chosen enemy.
  • Additionally, Mirage Dive will also strengthen the gaze of the Dragon Gauge by 1. Dragon Gauge is necessary to be able to use Dragoon’s skills, so Mirage Dive is definitely a very strong skill that can unlock Dragoon’s other skills.

  • Additionally, Nastrond can also be executed between the Dragoon’s usual GCD attack combo skill. This makes it so that Nastrond can easily be used without breaking the Dragoon’s combo, making it suitable to be used in any kind of situation to deal more damage to the enemies.

3. High Jump

A video describing why Dragoon is fun to play. See High Jump in action at 1:58.

  • High Jump is a powerful ability skill that, when executed, will be able to deal damage with a 400 attack potency. It is also a jumping attack and the Dragoon will return to their original position after the attack was made.
  • High Jump will also grant the buff of ‘Dive Ready’, which is the necessary buff that Dragoons need in order to execute Mirage Dive. This skill will help further increase the damage dealt towards the enemies.
  • In addition, High Jump is also another ability skill that can be executed and weaved between the Dragoon’s GCD attacks. This makes it so that Dragoons can easily use High Jump to deal more damage without having to break their ongoing combo.

2. Wyrmwind Thrust

A video demonstrating the Wyrmwind Thrust skill.

Wyrmwind Thrust is the next offensive skill set that this article would like to introduce. It is one of the most powerful Dragoon’s skills that players can have access to.

Why Wyrmwind Thrust is Great:

  • Wyrmwind Thrust is a level 90 skill, meaning that it’s the last skill that the Dragoon can learn currently. Wyrmwind Thrust will deliver an attack on a straight line with a 420 potency for the first enemy and 50% less for all remaining enemies.
  • It is quite high potency damage. Additionally,  Dragoons will also have two charges of this skill, and each charge will cost 2 Firstminds' Focus to execute.
  • On top of that, Wyrmwind Thrust can also be used between the Dragoon's usual GCD attacks, meaning that Dragoon can easily use this skill to deal extra damage to the enemies without having to fit into their GCD combo.
