Large and explorative worlds are one of the most important features in the RPG genre. Exploring the spooky swamps in the Witcher 3, the scorched wastelands in Fallout 76, and the flashy urban areas in Cyberpunk 2077 were some of my most memorable experiences - and that’s exactly what I’ll be blabbing about today. Decent RPGs with exploration - let’s get to it!

10. Monster Hunter: World

Monster Hunter: World offers a large world with many different terrains and many different monsters to kill. The world itself feels MASSIVE, the view of distant spiky mountains will leave you with a feeling of being in a completely alien world.

Also, there’s a monster in every corner waiting to slaughter you or get slaughtered BY you, either on an open field, perhaps in a cave, or some narrow valley - try it out, it’s dope!

9. The Forgotten City

Do you like Ancient Rome? Perhaps the architecture? Apparently, the ancient Romans thought it was a good idea to build an underground city, with very little access to sunlight. But hey, the city is MASSIVE and it looks cool - the columns, the “YELLOW” setting, and a long list of other arched buildings. Take the basement dweller to a whole new meaning and pick this game!

8. The Outer Worlds

How many hours will it take you on average to fully explore the map in this game - about 75 hours. The ability to travel on your ship to other distant planets, colonize them and settle your base on them is what makes this one of the most entertaining open-world games to play currently. 

Each planet offers different environments and shapes of the terrain, it’s also up to you how you’re gonna conduct your colonization of other planets. Sick game!

7. Divinity: Original Sin 2

The game offers gameplay similar to Diablo 3 - you’ll be playing from a top-down perspective and travel to areas unknown, filled with hostile humans and creatures. The world feels neverending, letting you use its environment to your advantage. You’ll be playing in sunlight, snow or scorching heat. If you like the combination of magic&open world, this game is most definitely for you!

6. Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberprank 69? Really? Come on, guys… This game used to be kinda icky 8 months ago, as of now it’s not that bad - with all the bug fixes and improved gameplay, the game is far better than it used to be. But what about the open world?

It’s rich. The city itself is filled with modern-looking skyscrapers and its overall glowy, filled with less and more lively NPC’s. Besides the city, you can also roam the desert with your favorite car, engage in long car chases, and do many more cool things. Try out the game, maybe in a month or two!

5. Conan Exiles

Build a cool base on a desert, in the jungle, in snowy mountains, and many more cool regions that this game has to offer. The game also does a great job at letting you build a base on top of a mountainside, which makes it a great defensive spot - just remember to include a plan B in case you got overran!

Engage in combat, discuss war plans, progress, but most importantly - discover the world and gather resources that are necessary to survive in this harsh world!

4. Middle-earth™: Shadow of Mordor™

So what’s awesome about this game? Of course, its open world and the ability to create an army of orcs to fight other armies of orcs. You’ll go on a long journey of defeating, humiliating, recruiting your foes on many different terrains - some of them will be snowy, maybe sunny, sometimes urban, and less urban. Also, the game lasts for a long time, so you don’t have to worry about an 8-hour long storyline like in other games.

3. Elder Scrolls Online

The game was released in 2013 and plenty of features and expansions were added to this game. Each expansion offers a new map to explore, new creatures to slay, and many classes to level up. Engage in combat on scorched lands fighting off demons, fight oversized wildlife in the forests, and plenty of many scenarios that offer cool experiences. 

Massive open world, decent graphics, and addicting gameplay is what this game has to offer. Look it up!

2. Fallout 76

I enjoyed Fallout 4, but it always was a shame that multiplayer wasn’t a thing in that game. Of course, everything changed when Fallout 76 was released - you and your friends were rewarded with the possibility of getting mauled to death by some Deathclaw. Together. How wholesome!

But instead of that, you could whack some bandits in an outpost in the middle of the wastelands. The map itself offers a post-apocalyptic setting, both present outside and in the underground. There is also partial vegetation, but scarce!

1. The Witcher 3

A game with more of a medieval setting and architecture. You’ll be playing as a mercenary, also known as a witcher - a sword for hire, kill pesky beasts and monsters, sometimes human, either for moral reasons or gold. 

But the open world of this game is what made it a game of the year in 2015 - riding through the wheatfields and treacherous swamps was always a remarkable experience, walking through the busy streets of Novigrad and interacting with funny or downright insulting NPC’s was always a treat. With many dungeons and secret locations to explore, you can expect 350-400 hours of gameplay. The best exploration game out there!
