What is the best build for Wizards?

It has been a while since I have been able to talk about my 2nd favorite class, mainly because I have been busy obsessing over the new GoD Demon Hunter set.  Also, last time I did talk about the class, it was to say how terrible it has become compared to other classes.  Don’t get me wrong, though, playing as a Wizard through the campaign was where I fell in love with the game and I still batter enemies with arcane abilities whenever I get the chance.  So let’s get down to it and talk about the Top 5 builds to maximize your mage!

Starting us off at number 5…

5.  Delsere’s Magnum Opus/Frozen Orb

  • Delsere’s Magnum Opus was crafted by the Madman Delsere and he obviously had GR Solo play in mind.  This build maximizes the effects of the armor set to control time and enemies while freezing them away in coordinated blasts.  This crowd control style is great for beginners and experts alike as it allows you to group enemies, slow them down, retreat and destroy them from a safe distance.
  • Casting Black Hole gathers enemies to a central location allowing you to Slow them more effectively.  Once they are grouped, hit them with slow time and blast away at them with all other attacks.
  • Delsere’s set makes every use of Arcane Orb decrease the cooldown of Slow Time, PLUS all enemies affected by Slow Time take 8,500% more damage until 5 seconds after Slow Time ends.
  • Bane of the Trapped Gem further increases damage to Slowed enemies.

4.  Firebird’s Finery/ Meteor

  • Another GR build that boasts of a weapon forged in fire, cooled in blood and infused with the very soul of it’s creator.  This is a channeling focussed build that requires attention to resources and cooldowns between dealing massive amounts of damage. Even without Slow Time, this build is great for grouping enemies, trapping them, and then proceeding to annihilate them.
  • Firebird’s set revives you via meteor if you die (possible every 60 seconds) and additionally provides 1000% weapon damage per fire attack which can be stacked 3 times to ignite an enemy.  This ignition will deal 3000% damage as fire until they die. For all ignited enemies you gain 200% damage (stackable 20 times)
  • With these pro-fire options, The Grand Vizier in Kanai’s Cube reduces the cost of Meteor by half.
  • Additionally in Kanai’s Cube, Halo of Arlyse casts Frost Nova each time you take 10% of your life in damage.

3. Typhon’s Veil/Frost Hydra

  • Why fight when you can summon something else to do it for you? The first build on our list that doesn’t rely on dishing out damage in coordinated blasts.  However, it still is reliant on a “group-slow-kill” strategy but with a more constant flow of damage.  I know I am getting repetitive but this is another GR Solo build.  
  • We’ll start with Kanai’s Cube, drop Serpent Sparker in the weapon slot, and The Magistrate in the armor slot.  This combination will give you an additional Hydra, with enhanced damage, and periodically they will cast Frost Nova.
  • Typhon’s set doubles Hydra’sHydra duration, and Hydras deal 1300% damage for each Hydra head that is alive.
  • Finishing up the Hydra based buffs, Tasker and Theo coupled with Enforcer Gem further enhance Hydras by increasing damage and attack speed.

2.  Legacy of Dreams/Mammoth Hydra

Wizard disintegrates foes with Arcane Fire.

  • Our second Hydra based build to join the top 5, this unique setup utilizes the Legacy of Dreams perk that grants increased damage based on the number of legendary items you have equipped (which should be all of them).  Like its predecessor the Typhon’s Veil build, this is a very steady damage dealer.  Once again, it is a build designed for running Rifts.  This build also diversifies the element of the attack options to have a better chance of being buffed by several of the equipped items.
  • Serpent Sparker and Magistrate are again used to add a Hydra and periodically cast Frost Nova.
  • Hydra is changed to Mammoth rune so that they breathebreath fire and coat the ground in front of them with lava.
  • Ice Climber boots prevent you from being frozen.

1. Chantodo’s Will, Vyr’s Amazing Arcana/Archon   

A true master of the arcane no longer need to hold his spellbook.

  • Vyr’s Amazing Arcana seems to be the key here but I find that the addition of Chantodo’s Will is what really makes this build the best.  This build embodies the playstyle I first used to destroy the Lords of Hell.  It uses Archon primarily and is once again a coordinated and explosive playstyle.  The playstyle is, you guessed it, a Solo GR build BUT you can modify it to Speed Farm.
  • Vyr’s set grants Archon the abilities of all runes (in a nutshell, both cold and electric damage, increased damage, while in archon teleport has a 2-second2 second cooldown, and transformation erupts dealing 3680% damage to nearby foes.)
  • Chantodo’s Will enhances Archon further by releasing a Wave of Destruction (4000% weapon damage) every second.  This Wave of Destruction is buffed by a perk that is stackable (up to 20x) of 4000% weapon damage per attack that lands while not in Archon form.
  • Archon’s stackable damage increase of 6% per enemy killed during Archon is buffed by Fazula’s Improbable Chain (automatically entering Archon with 45 stacks) and The Swami in Kanai’s Cube (stacks last 19 seconds after Archon expires)
