(Top 10) LOL Best Items for Movement Speed

League of Legends, movement speed, assassin
Hecarim is waiting for the chance to run you down

I believe movement speed to be one of the most underappreciated stats in League of Legends. I mean if you didn’t have any movement speed you couldn't play the game at all, it's kind of important. Now that preseason is upon us, items both old and new are showcasing just how impactful and sometimes terrifying movement speed items can be. In this article, I’ll be counting down the 10 best movement speed items in League of Legends so you can run away with your game

10. Youmuu’s Ghostblade

The iconic assassin item, as a player that loves to play squishy mages I won't deny that hearing this activation noise brings on a bit of PTSD. Assassin metas are dark times for me. It might be number ten on this list, but its effectiveness goes without question

Youmuu’s Ghostblade Details: https://lol.garena.com/game-info/items

  • 60 Attack Damage
  • 18 Lethality
  • Active- Wraith Step- Gain 20% movement speed and Ghosting for 6 seconds
  • Wandering Blade: Gain 40 movement speed while out of combat

What Makes Youmuu’s Ghostblade Great:

  • The stat line is undeniably great, popping that amount of attack damage and armor shred on any given Zed or Talon is a huge sign that they are about to start dealing an insane amount of damage
  • While far from the most noticeable part of this item, the passive 40 movement speed while out of combat is amazing on assassins. Part of what makes assassins so great is that many of them are designed to roam from mid to bot or top, and this out of combat movement speed is phenomenal for quickly and efficiently helping out your teammates
  • Youmuu’s active ability is definitely the best part of the item. This is the perfect way to catch up to a slow-moving squishy target, rush down your lane opponent before they can retreat to the safety of their turret, and in those unfortunate moments where you can’t quite one-shot that ADC or support it provides a nice way of making a quick getaway

9. Shurelya’s Battlesong

Shurelya’s Battlesong is one of the best utility items an engage support can buy. With this, typically slow-moving supports can gain the speed necessary to lock down the enemy bot lane and set up kills for their carry

Shurelya’s Battlesong Details: https://lol.garena.com/game-info/items

  • 350 Health
  • 20 Ability Haste
  • 5% Movement Speed
  • 50% Base Mana Regen
  • Active- Inspire: Grants you and nearby allies 40% decaying movement speed for 4 seconds and grants additional magic damage on the next 3 attacks or abilities
  • Mythic Passive: Grants all other legendary items 2.5% movement speed

What Makes Shurelya’s Battlesong Great:

  • The stats and mythic passive for this item make it great for supports that like to roam. This item is very well suited for an Alistair or Leona, supports who like to roam to try and help out their mid laner. This item makes it easier to make a quick and efficient gank
  • Supports that love to get up in your opponent’s faces make fantastic use of this item. Activating its ability so you and your ADC can just run people down with crowd control and bonus damage is a super powerful effect to have
  • While maybe not as useful on enchanter supports, depending on the situation this item can also work well on disengage supports like Janna or Soraka. Their entire purpose is to keep their team alive so the ability to run away from danger faster can be quite useful

8. Trinity Force

As much as I love to play mages, I've also spent quite a lot of time playing top lane as a duelist or bruiser. I have a ton of fond memories building this item on Fiora, Irelia, and Camille and I know just how hard a champion can power spike after building this incredible item

Trinity Force Details: https://lol.garena.com/game-info/items

  • 35 Attack Damage
  • 35% Attack Speed
  • 200 Health
  • 10 Ability Haste
  • Swift Strikes: Attacks grant 25 movement speed for 3 seconds. If the target is a champion increase your base attack damage by 6% for 3 seconds, stacking up to 5 times
  • Spellblade: After using an ability your next attack deals bonus physical damage
  • Mythic Passive: Grants all other legendary items 10 attack speed

What Makes Trinity Force Great:

  • The stats that this item gives is just everything that a bruiser or duelist could want. More attack damage and attack speed to deal a ton more damage, ability haste so your high-impact abilities come up faster and even increased health to make you harder to kill. All of this and the mythic passive that gives you a ton of attack speed makes this item great based on the statline alone
  • The Spellblade passive pairs well with bruisers because a lot of them have abilities that have to do with auto-attacking anyway so this gives them extra damage for just playing the game, which is great. Something like Irelia Q which applies on-hit effects or Darius W which is slow in addition to extra damage benefits from a passive like this
  • A big reason why Trinity Force is so good on so many top laners is that the passive bonuses to movement speed and attack damage are huge. This item lets you stick to your enemy and every time you hit them you get even stronger. If you can do it for long enough you can increase your damage by 30% which can be absurd

7. Turbo Chemtank

One of the new tank items introduced in preseason, Turbo Chemtank is terrifying. Currently, there are tanks in the game that deal more damage than the rest of their team so them having an item that helps run you down is downright nightmarish

Turbo Chemtank Details: https://lol.garena.com/game-info/items

  • 350 Health
  • 25 Armor
  • 50 Magic Resist
  • 15 Ability Haste
  • Active- Supercharged: Grants 75% move speed towards enemies or enemy turrets for 4 seconds. Once near an enemy, a shockwave is emitted that slows nearby champions by 40% for 2 seconds
  • Immolate: Deal magic damage per second based on your bonus health to nearby enemies
  • Mythic Passive: Gives all other legendary items 5% tenacity and slow resist

What Makes Turbo Chemtank Great:

  • The mythic passive pairs well with the rest of the item, rushing forward to run down the enemy team and them being unable to stop you because of your increased tenacity is a fantastic pairing
  • As I mentioned, tanks in current League of Legends simultaneously take very little damage and can dish out a ton of it. Part of this is items like Turbo Chemtank that give the Immolate passive that deals max health damage to any nearby enemy. Tanks get a lot of use out of this with all the bonus health they build and after a certain point it gets to where they both don’t take damage and do more damage than most people on the enemy team
  • The most notable and flashy part of the item is its active ability. Activating this on someone like Urgot that needs to be close to an enemy to do anything can be hard to deal with, after he runs you down he just keeps you in place while dishing loads of damage

6. Dead Man’s Plate

So this item holds a very special place in my heart because when I first started playing the game I had absolutely no concept of how the game worked or what to build. So I somehow got it into my head that this was the best item to build and I built it on everyone. Teemo, Evelynn, Fiddlesticks, it was so bad. But nowadays I can see how to get the most value out of this item, by slapping it on a tank and zooming around the map

Dead Man’s Plate Details: https://lol.garena.com/game-info/items

  • 475 Health
  • 40 Armor
  • 5% Move Speed
  • Shipwreker: While moving build up to 60 bonus movement speed. Your next attack discharges this movement speed to deal bonus magic damage. If dealt by a melee champion at max speed, this attack also slows the target by 50% for 1 second

What Makes Dead Man’s Plate Great:

  • The stats on this item are phenomenal, almost 500 health is nothing to scoff at. The additional 40 armor makes it perfect for a tank to build against an AD character in the top lane like Riven or Camille
  • Most tanks are fairly immobile, so having a passive that gives a ton of movement speed helps get them across the map so they can group with their team faster and ensure that they can be there to help with teamfights or objectives
  • Dead Man’s Plate making your next attack more powerful and slow your target makes it ideal for tanks like Nasus or Illaoi, characters with abilities that empower their auto-attacks. It's far from the biggest slow in the game, but it can be crucial for sticking to an enemy

5. Staff of Flowing Water

I was excited to see this item because I’m always really hyped to see new support items in general. I one-tricked Soraka for a long time in ranked, she was what I used to climb because in lower elos people underestimate her impact and won't build against her. So seeing an item like this for enchanter supports that can have a lot of impact in a unique way is really cool

Staff of Flowing Water Details: https://lol.garena.com/game-info/items

  • 60 Ability Power
  • 10% Heal and Shield Power
  • 100% Base Mana Regen
  • Rapids: Healing or shielding an ally grants you both 15% movement speed and bonus ability power for 3 seconds

What Makes Staff of Flowing Water Great:

  • The movement speed that this item gives on healing and shielding is great for using both offensively and defensively, offensively because now it's easier to run down your opponents with your carry and defensively because now you can help you and your carry run away out of a bad position
  • The bonus ability power that this item gives you is cool for people who like to play enchanter supports aggressively. Just because I’m playing Janna or Lulu doesn't mean I can't be aggressive with my poke and this item helps with that
  • What's cool about this item is that it buffs your allies’ ability power, which is unique for support items because usually the buffs are more suited towards an attack damage character. Now supports have a fantastic item choice if their team’s overall damage is more AP heavy

4. Cosmic Drive

This is a cool item for mages that like to spam their abilities, not only does it grant a massive amount of ability haste but the characters who have these low cooldown abilities usually also have movement speed built into their kit so they pair well with the massive amount of bonus movement speed this item can give

Cosmic Drive Details: https://lol.garena.com/game-info/items

  • 70 Ability Power
  • 200 Health
  • 30 Ability Haste
  • Spelldance: Dealing damage with abilities grants bonus move speed based on ability haste for 4 seconds

What Makes Cosmic Drive Great:

  • Ability haste is one of the more important stats for mages especially in the mid and late game, so this item giving such a large amount of ability haste right off the bat is strong
  • The bonus movement speed based on dealing damage with abilities is already strong on its own, but when you pair it with characters like Lillia or Cassiopeia who already have low ability cooldowns and movement speed built into their kit it can get pretty insane
  • The item synergizes well with itself, because of the large amount of ability haste it gives you can build it early and still get a lot of use out of its passive even if you don't have any other ability haste items

3.Night Harvester

Night Harvester is great for a lot of the same reasons Cosmic Drive is great, big damage, and a lot of movement speed. However, Night Harvester does edge out Cosmic Drive because of its mythic passive and the ability to reset the movement speed bonus

Night Harvester Details:  https://lol.garena.com/game-info/items

  • 80 Ability Power
  • 250 Health
  • 15 Ability Haste
  • The Reaping: Damaging a champion deals additional magic damage and grants you 25% movement speed for 1.5 seconds. Damaging a new champion will extend the duration of the movement speed bonus
  • Mythic Passive: Grants all other legendary items 5 ability haste

What Makes Night Harvester Great:

  • In addition to a great stat line, the mythic passive of giving your items bonus ability haste is really strong as well. Now that cooldown reduction is uncapped this can make it so your abilities are on an absurdly low cooldown
  • Just like Cosmic Drive, a lot of why Night Harvester is great is attributed to the massive amount of movement speed you can get just from damaging an enemy
  • What's cool about this item is that the reset mechanic incentivizes this item to be built on AP assassins. Evelynn, Diana, and Akali can take advantage of this in teamfights by constantly procing the movement speed and weaving their way in and out of the fight to both deal damage and keep themselves alive

2. Force of Nature

For the longest time tanks had pretty boring options of what to build when facing teams with a lot of ability power, nothing too flashy or fun to build. But Force of Nature is an item that's not only fantastic but feels fun to build and use

Force of Nature Details: https://lol.garena.com/game-info/items

  • 350 Health
  • 60 Magic Resist
  • 5% Movement Speed
  • Absorb: Taking damage from abilities grants you 6 movement speed and 4 magic resist for 5 seconds, stacking up to 5 times

What Makes Force of Nature Great:

  • Force of Nature is one of the few items that gives 60 magic resist, and with a ton of health in addition to that magic resist it becomes very hard for an AP character to deal too much damage to you even if all you have is Force of Nature
  • Force of Nature is a really interesting concept because it punishes your enemies for attacking you. They have to keep in mind that the more they hit you, the tankier you get. So they can't just absentmindedly try and poke you down before a teamfight starts or else their entire team will just get steamrolled by you
  • Force of Nature emphasizes the most fun aspect of playing tanks, which is planting yourself directly in the middle of the enemy team and wreaking havoc while the rest of your team cleans up. Force of Nature is great for that because it simultaneously makes it harder for you to die and the movement speed makes it easier for you to get to the enemy backline and keep their carries locked down

1. Stridebreaker

Stridebreaker does everything a fighter or brawler could want out of an item. Damage, health, attack speed, a dash, and a ton of movement speed. Stridebreaker is a guarantee to the enemy team that you just got a whole lot harder to deal with

Stridebreaker Details: https://lol.garena.com/game-info/items

  • 50 Attack Damage
  • 20% Attack Speed
  • 300 Health
  • 10 Ability Haste
  • Active- Swift Slash: Lunge a short distance, dealing physical damage to nearby enemies and slowing them by 60% decaying over 2 seconds
  • Heroic Gait: Dealing physical damage gives 30 movement speed for 2 seconds
  • Mythic Passive: Grants all other legendary items 3% movement speed

What Makes Stridebreaker Great:

  • Fighters usually deal their damage through a combination of attack speed and high physical damage. A lot of them also benefit from building a little tanky, so Stridebreaker has every stat a fighter could benefit from. The bonus movement speed from the mythic passive is the icing on the cake
  • Just like with Cosmic Drive and Night Harvester, getting bonus movement speed just for playing the game and attacking is strong. There's never a scenario where a fighter or bruiser wouldn't benefit from having an easier time engaging on their laner or the entire enemy team
  • Many fighters already have movement abilities to begin with. Camille, Riven, Irelia, Yasuo, Yone, and Fiora all have some type of movement ability that helps them get onto an enemy. So Stridebreaker giving a dash in addition to all the dashes that these champs already have is insane

Movement speed can be overlooked in the grand scheme of things, but it can be one of the most useful stats in the game. Whether its a support looking to speed up their carry, a tank looking to lock down the enemy team’s carries, a mage looking to kite with abilities, or a fighter looking to engage and kill the enemy team, movement speed proves to be a fantastic resource to do anything and everything that you want
