[Top 10] Animal Crossing: New Horizons Best Cranky Villagers

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Best Cranky Villagers
Can you spot the cranky villager?

How can you find the most interesting villager personality types in Animal Crossing: New Horizons?

Villagers in Animal Crossing: New Horizons bring a variety of personalities to the island.

One of the most popular types of villagers among players is the “cranky” villagers.

Cranky villagers bring a lot to the table when it comes to their personalities, and they offer a nice balance between the peppy or jock villagers.

They aren’t always cranky, and some even show their softer side on occasion, often playing the part of village grandpa.

Cranky villagers definitely have interesting dialogue, especially when they interact with villager personalities that they don’t always get along with.

Let’s take a look at the top 10 best cranky villagers in Animal Crossing: New Horizon.

10. Kabuki

Kabuki is cranky even in his own house, by himself.

Kabuki gets his name from the traditional Japanese style of theater.

He is a white cat with red markings very similar to Kabuki theater makeup, and yellow eyes.

Kabuki’s favorite colors are red and purple, and his favorite hobby is music.

Once you get to know Kabuki, he warms up to you quite nicely and will even throw some compliments your way if you choose the correct dialogue options.

He finds jock and lazy villagers rather boring, and he doesn’t get along well with peppy villagers.

He’s even been known to spread rumors about other villagers if he feels the island needs some excitement.

What’s great about Kabuki:

  • His simple style means that he doesn’t require expensive gifts to be happy.
  • His unique look makes him stand out amongst the other villagers.
  • He is most likely to give you the DIY for the bonsai shelf.

9. Gaston

Don’t expect Gaston to share in your joy.

Gaston is a yellow rabbit with a thick mustache and a permanent frown on his face.

His favorite colors are brown and orange, and he prefers gifts that are simple and gorgeous.

Gaston’s favorite hobby is education, and he can often be seen wandering around the island with a book in his hand.

Once you get to know Gaston, he takes on a sort of grandpa role, and will start calling you “kiddo.”

He is usually very rude to the other villagers, especially the peppy ones, which is on par with his cranky personality.

He will consider you his closest friend, and may even confide in you if you keep him around for long enough.

What’s great about Gaston:

  • His catchphrase is “mon chou,” which roughly translates to “sweetie” from French.
  • He has a tendency to become like a grandpa, and may even become protective of you.
  • He is most likely to give you the DIY for a kettle bathtub.

8. Apollo

Well, that’s not a very nice thing to say, Apollo.

Apollo is a majestically cranky bald eagle who was born on the fourth of July.

He sports a black flight jacket, which is fitting because his favorite color is black.

Apollo’s style is cool and simple, and his favorite hobby is music.

He likes to wander around the island and sing, even if there is no music around.

He lives in a simple home with a monochromatic color scheme and a pool table.

What’s great about Apollo:

  • He will quickly become friendly to you compared to other cranky villagers.
  • He is one of the most popular eagle characters with players.
  • He is one of the few villagers whose appearance and color scheme makes him closely resemble the real-life animal he is based on.

7. Hopper

Hopper is one scary-looking penguin.

Hopper is one of the few penguins in New Horizons, and his namesake is likely from the Rockhopper penguin, which is one of the world’s smallest penguins.

He has bright red eyes, which make him seem even more intimidating than other cranky villagers.

Hopper’s favorite colors are yellow and red, and his style is cool and simple.

He is most often seen wearing the Bruce Lee-inspired yellow dragon suit.

Like Apollo, Hopper loves music and will sing whenever he’s given the chance.

What’s great about Hopper:

  • His catchphrase is “slushie.”
  • He lives in a cool house with iceberg floors and walls.
  • He is a popular villager among New Horizons players.

6. Fang

I think we’ve all felt what Fang is saying at some point in our lives.

Fang is a light gray wolf with a white muzzle and paws.

While he is not the only cranky wolf in New Horizons, he is more popular, with more players choosing him over Chief.

Fang’s favorite colors are white and aqua blue, and his style is simple and cool.

Like Gaston, his favorite hobby is education, and he likes to wander the island with a book or inspect things with a magnifying glass.

What’s so great about Fang:

  • Most players consider him one of the most handsome villagers.
  • He has a really classy home filled with furniture from the Antique collection.
  • He doesn’t seem to have as much of a temper as other cranky villagers.

5. Cyd

Cyd’s an elephant, so he’ll never forget how uncool you are.

Cyd is a red elephant with a purple tuft of hair on his head, a matching purple tail, and teal toenails.

His favorite colors are yellow and black, and his style is cool and active.

Despite being classified as cranky, Cyd is actually pretty friendly.

His favorite hobby is music, and this is shown in his home where he has both a radio and a drum set.

What’s great about Cyd:

  • He is considered to be a rare villager and is very popular among players, so he can be traded for a large amount of bells.
  • He is new to the Animal Crossing series, with his debut being in New Horizons.
  • Cyd is popular among players who like the goth style, as his home is decked out with skull flooring and wallpaper.

4. Octavian

Most people would be happy sitting on a beach, but not Octavian.

Octavian is a bright red octopus that likes to sport a black t-shirt, and he has one of the angriest expressions of all of the cranky villagers.

He has a white bandage on the back of his head, in the shape of an “x,” suggesting that maybe he falls down a lot.

His favorite colors are black and white, and his style is cool and simple.

His favorite hobby is to play, and he will often challenge the player to various competitions.

He frequently laments about getting old and pretty much stays grumpy all of the time when compared to other cranky villagers.

What’s great about Octavian:

  • His catchphrase is “Don’t be a sucker!” which is pretty sound life advice overall.
  • The interior of his home looks like the moon, complete with a spaceship and a space suit.
  • He is one of only three octopus villagers in New Horizons, and he is the only octopus to be featured in every Animal Crossing game.

3. Static

Don’t let Static’s smile fool you, there is plenty of crankiness behind it.

Static is a purple squirrel with a lime green and yellow lightning bolt on his head and matching green and yellow stripes on his busy tail.

His favorite colors are black and yellow, and his style is cool and active.

He is most often seen sporting a black and yellow dragon jacket.

His favorite hobby is music, and he has a very high-quality stereo in his home.

While he doesn’t spout a lot of the old man jokes that other cranky villagers do, he sees himself as more mature than other villagers, and he can be quite condescending.

He is one of only two cranky squirrel villagers in New Horizons, with most of the others being peppy.

What’s great about Static:

  • His bold color pattern has made him stand out since the original Animal Crossing game.
  • He has a sophisticated home interior with a monochromatic color scheme, skull flooring, and a great sound system.
  • He often has a smile on his face when he is crying, which really makes you wonder what is going on inside his head.

2. Butch

Who knows what set Butch off?

Butch is a brown and black dog with similar markings to a Rottweiler or Doberman.

His favorite colors are blue and gray, and he comes to the island in a snazzy argyle vest.

Butch’s style is cool and simple and his favorite hobby, like many other cranky villagers, is music.

His home interior has a western motif, and by the looks of his décor he seems to enjoy cars.

What’s great about Butch:

  • While there are many dogs in the Animal Crossing series, including non-playable characters like Isabelle, Butch is only one out of two cranky dog villagers.
  • His home features two racecar beds, a gas pump, and a phone booth, and is made to look like a street leading into a Western vista.
  • His bark is actually worse than his bite.

1. Gonzo

Gonzo can’t even relax when he’s fishing.

Gonzo is a gray koala with bright pink ears and slanted eyebrows that make him look extra cranky.

His favorite colors are black and green and his style is simple and cool.

Gonzo’s hobby is nature, and he is often seen fishing or catching bugs around the island.

His home interior resembles a log cabin, complete with log furniture and a wood stove.

His catchphrase, “mate,” comes from the fact that koalas are from Australia.

What’s great about Gonzo:

  • He is the only koala villager with a cranky personality.
  • His personality is often compared to an older Clint Eastwood.
  • He loves to wear ugly sweaters.
