Smash Ultimate Best Spirits

What are the best Spirits in Smash Ultimate?

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has Spirits for just about anything, like hilarious casual games, beating World of Light, or summoning other Spirits. Even if you’re a competitive Smasher, sometimes your buddies just want to mess around with Spirits, and I’ve had lots of fun with Spirits with friends such as the second-best Smasher in Norway. Building Spirit Teams will require some knowledge, but it’s not very hard to learn.

There are 1,288 Spirits that you can use to build Spirit Teams with as of August 2020. They offer powers from boosting specific moves to turning you into a giant. However, as with all things, some are better than the others.

With many different types of Spirits, the possibilities are endless. You can experiment with any Primary or Support Spirits as you wish, provided they fall within the game-allotted limits. However, I have gathered a list of Top 10 best spirits in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, consisting of five Primary Spirits and five Support Spirits.

10. Moon

The doom of the land of Ikana

The Moon almost destroyed the land of Ikana from The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, only barely prevented from crashing down just in time (you’ll get it if you played the game). In Ultimate, this Support Spirit turns you into a Giant for 10 to 15 seconds when the game starts, after which you return to your normal size. When you need to hit so hard you can potentially take a stock in one hit, this is the Spirit to equip in your team.

Cost: 1 slot

Best Spirits to combine with: Most Primary Spirits that have 3 slots, any Support Spirit that increases transformation time, any attack-boosting Support Spirit that only takes up 1 slot.

Best Fighters to use on: Any Fighter, but those with extremely powerful Smash Attacks benefit the most. Examples include Marth/Lucina, Ganondorf, Ike, Captain Falcon, Snake, Toon Link, Olimar, Roy/Chrom, Mario, Luigi, Donkey Kong, Fox, Pikachu, Pichu, Bowser, Wolf, Little Mac, Wii Fit Trainer, Meta Knight, Cloud, Ryu/Ken, Corrin, Simon/Richter, Joker, Hero, Min Min, Incineroar, Terry, King K. Rool, Shulk, Link, Mr. Game & Watch, King Dedede

09. Wind Fish

The sleeping guardian of Koholint Island

Link (well, one of his incarnations) woke the Wind Fish from his sleep in The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. This Support Spirit increases the power of all Special Moves when equipped, making it very useful for Fighters that have excellent Special Moves. You can combine this Spirit with others or even more than one if all of them fit, but it is inherently flexible.

Cost: 1 slot

Best Spirits to combine with: One or two more of itself and/or Physical Attack boosting Support Spirits

Best Fighters to use on: Bayonetta, Cloud, Snake, Samus/Dark Samus, Incineroar, Bowser, Duck Hunt, Rosalina & Luma, King K. Rool, Hero, Banjo & Kazooie, Byleth, Mii Brawler, Mii Swordfighter, Mii Gunner, Pac Man, Robin, Ryu/Ken, Ike, Marth/Lucina, Dr. Mario, Corrin, Olimar, R.O.B., Zelda, Greninja, Byleth, Joker

08. Celebi

The Psychic/Grass Mythical Pokémon

Hailing from Pokémon Gold and Silver, this Pokémon is the guardian of the Ilex Forest. You heal automatically 5% every 5 seconds when you have this Support Spirit in your Team every time Great Autoheal is triggered. If you’re feeling particularly cheeky, you can select a campy Fighter like Pac Man or Snake and then play a degenerate (I once fought a Pac Man who did this out of fun) passive style, but you might lose friends.

Cost: 3 slots

Best Spirits to combine with: Any 3-slot Primary Spirit

07. Absolutely Safe Capsule

The perfect tomb for an immortal being

In Earthbound 3, Porky was sealed in this capsule, which is absolutely unbreakable inside and outside. Being faithful to the series, this Primary Spirit boasts the best defense stats, up to 12,000 after it is sent to the Brick-Wall Dojo, an increase from 10,000. It boasts no attack boosts or slots whatsoever, but if you need some ridiculously high defense, this is the perfect pick.

06. Azura

The mysterious dancer from a world outside worlds

Azura is a dancer and singer full of mysteries, secrets, and unmentionable pain, hailing from Fire Emblem: Fates. Equipping her as a Support Spirit will increase weapon attack power as well as movement speed, which is very useful for certain Fighters. The added movement speed is always welcome, especially if you are using someone with lower movement speed.

Cost: 2 slots

Best Spirits to combine with: Another Support Spirit that increases weapon attack power, Victini, or a Trade-Off Attack boosting Support Spirit

Best Fighters to use on: Marth/Lucina, Link, Young Link, Toon Link, Ike, Roy/Chrom, Ganondorf, Meta Knight, Pit/Dark Pit, Palutena, Robin, Shulk, Cloud, Corrin, Simon/Richter, Joker, Hero, Byleth, Mii Swordfighter

05. Victini

The dual-type Psychic/Fire Mythical Pokémon

This Pokémon comes from Pokémon Black and White, said to bring victory to its trainer. As a Legend-class Supporting Spirit, and in my opinion, the best Supporting Spirit, Victini allows the Fighter’s Smash Attacks to become stronger and faster. The best thing is that you can also equip up to three of them if your Primary Spirit has enough slots.

Cost: 1 slot

Best Spirits to combine with: Another Victini, any attack boosting Primary and/or Supporting Spirit, Trade-Off Attacks boosting Supporting Spirits

Best Fighters to use on: Any Fighter

04. Skull Kid & Majora’s Mask

The deceived kid possessed by an evil mask

In The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, Majora’s Mask preys on Skull Kid’s insecurities and possesses him, which forces Link (seriously, another one?) to save the Land of Termina from the Moon. As a Primary Spirit with Lifesteal, you heal around 0.3% damage whenever you hit the enemy with any move that is not a Special Move. It’s not much until you pair it up with an Autoheal Supporting Spirit, allowing you to heal both playing passively and aggressively.

Slots: 2

Best Spirits to combine with: Any Autoheal Supporting Spirit, any Trade-Off Attack boosting Support Spirit, any Critical-Health Healing Support Spirit

Best Fighters to use on: Any Fighter

03. Keldeo (Resolute Form)

The secret form for Keldeo, the dual-type Water/Fighting Mythical Pokémon

This form of Keldeo is only seen in Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 onwards, while the first Black and White games had Keldeo’s “Ordinary Form” only. This Primary Spirit is essentially a Victini in the form of a Primary Spirit, which means you get to use Hyper Smash Attacks. Being blessed with such an amazing ability already, you don’t have many other Spirits you can add, but it’s still powerful.

Slots: 1

Best Spirits to combine with: Victini, any other Supporting Spirit that only requires one slot

Best Fighters to use on: Any Fighter, but particularly Min Min, Marth/Lucina, Ganondorf, Olimar, Joker, Ryu/Ken, Roy/Chrom, Captain Falcon, Bowser, Donkey Kong

02. Beast Ganon

The savage, crazed form of Ganondorf

The second form of Ganondorf as he appears in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Beast Ganon is part of the final battle in that game. As a Primary Spirit, he will grant the Impact Run effect, in which your dash will launch an opponent, potentially starting a combo. When in doubt, simply start dashing, and the opponent will have to either shield or be launched, and shielding might allow you to grab them because of shield-stun.

Slots: 3

Best Spirits to combine with: Celebi, any Supporting Spirit that boosts attacks, any Supporting Spirit that boosts movement speed, Ho-oh

Best Fighters to use on: Any fighter, but you can also get an extra jump with Ho-oh and potentially juggle your opponent to take a stock. Fox is one example I know of.

01. Metal Face

The mechanized form of Mumkhar (and the best Spirit Team for quick KOs)

In Xenoblade Chronicles (and the Definitive Edition released in recently in 2020) Mumkhar, a Homs (the game’s equivalent of humans) was made into a large Mechonis and given his grisly nickname, making him go against his original species. As one of the most powerful Primary Spirits, Metal Face is frequently said to be the best. Transforming a Fighter both Giant and Metal, the sight of it is bound to make your buddies scream in fear and run when they see this unholy terror.

Slots: 1

Best Spirits to combine with: Victini or any Supporting Spirit that increases Transformation Time

Best Fighters to use on: Ganondorf, just Ganondorf Forward Smash Attack. Potentially Bowser and Ike, but Ganondorf has both good range and speed while Bowser’s has less range and Ike’s is not quick enough. Laughter, screaming, and howling are not included in the package.
