Top 10 Best Edge Guarding Characters

10) Snake

Military weapons in my cartoon fighter?

The agent of Fox Hound has decent air combos which can knock away opponents further from the stage, all while not worrying if he’ll make it back on the stage. His Cypher is one of the best recoveries in the game, as it allows him to propel himself up for a short while. His Remote Missile is what makes him shine, as it allows him to control the missile from anywhere on the map.

What makes him great.

  • Great recovery
  • Great zoner

9) Gannondorf

Slow but bold.

One of my mains. The tanky Gannon actually has the ability to keep opponents away from the stage. He has pretty good air combos as well, having some of the best knockbacks. His d-air is also one of the best spikes in the whole game. His recovery is decent, but if it manages to grab an opponent, it gets a kill plus saves him in the process. If all else fails and you have extra stock, use Gannon’s Flame Choke while in the air.

What makes him great.

  • Great D-Air
  • Tank
  • Great air combos

8) Young Link

The better of the Links.

Out of all the Links, Young Link has the most going for him. His projectiles are enough to keep opponents away from the stage, but he also has a great air game. He’s easy to pick up with a lot to master, but the results are worth it.

What makes him great.

  • Great recovery
  • Great air game
  • Great zoner
  • Quick fighter

7) Ness

It's best to stay away from the PK.

Once you are caught in the air by this Wonder-kid, it’s over for you. Ness’ side air is devastating as it captures you in an 8 hit combo with no way of dodging getting out of. It can kill as small mid percentages. He also has great projectiles, including the hard-hitting PK-Flash. If an opponent gets too close to the stage, hit-em with Ness’ down smash.

What makes him great.

  • Great air game
  • Great recovery
  • Great zoning

6) Pac-Man

Sending opponents to the edge, without them returning on the other side.

The forbidden pizza. This yellow pellet has enough on his repertoire to keep anyone away from the stage. His Bonus Fruit can give him hard-hitting items, even one that can spike down opponents. While above enemies he can also drop his fire hydrant. Has a great recovery as well, and can also use his Power Pellet to knock out opponents with ease.

What makes him great.

  • Great Zoner
  • Unpredictable
  • Great arsenal
  • Great recovery

5) Simon/Richter

This duo earns the title for the best zoners. Nothing beats their projectiles.

This pair plays the same so I’ll just group them together. The ultimate zoner, these Belmonts attack with the best range, hitting any opponent coming near the stage. They also have multi-hit projectiles that can open opponents to a side smash. Not great recovery with their up special, but can make up for it with their side air.

What makes them great.

  • Great projectiles
  • Best range

4) Inkling

The many styles and weapons help these kids keep away the competition.

The Inkling kids are a fun bunch to use. They have a unique playstyle where the more they cover their opponents in ink the more knockback they receive, which is important for any edge guard. They also have great recovery while having a small hitbox on startup, sabotaging an opponent on their way back on the stage.

What makes them great.

  • Great recovery
  • Great knockback
  • Quick fighter
  • Great projectiles

3) Lucina

Fast and dangerous, a tough fighter to dodge in the air.

Lucina has one of the best air games, with little to no start-up lag and great strength throughout her sword. She also has great vertical recovery while containing a great hitbox. Not utilized much, but if all else fails she can use her counter to block and push back any opponent’s attacks as they struggle to get back on.

What makes her great.

  • Solid air game
  • Great recovery
  • Great match-ups
  • Quick fighter

2) Joker

The master thief, claims the stage as his own. Think twice before approaching.

Still a fresh fighter, he has quickly risen above almost all the fighters in Smash Bros. Who can blame him, he has one of the best moves-sets and that's not including his buff, Arsen. A complex fighter for sure, but once a player has his mechanics down he can be dangerous. Has an air game that keeps opponents idle, Knockback buffs with Arsen, and can cancel opponents’ recoveries with his pistols.

What makes him great.

  • Great recovery
  • Great Buff
  • Great air game
  • Great projectiles
  • Great knockback

1) Mr. Game & Watch

The most diverse character that will confuse his opponents.

For many reasons, this character triumphs all in the Edgeguarding area. To start off he is a floaty character, making him hard to fall to his doom. His recovery is one of the best since it stops him in mid-air then hurls him up high then keeps him afloat with his parachute. Each stage of the recovery has a hitbox, which is a plus. He also has a great side air with the turtle, which is a multi-hit and dishes out major knockback. If all else fails, use his key. It hurls him downward, dealing major damage and sometimes spiking opponents.

What makes him great.

  • Solid air game
  • Solid recovery
  • Solid Move-set
  • Decent projectiles
  • Unpredictable
  • Quick fighter
