[Top 10] ACNH Best Grumpy Villagers

An angry and irate group of cranky villagers.

Animal Crossing New Horizons is most known for its variation of physically cute villagers. Each villager has one of 8 different personality types. While most people choose the more popular personalities, “peppy” or “smug”, others tend to love the more personable and relatable personalities, “lazy” and “cranky”.

While the peppy and smug villagers are adorable and have great conversation skills, the cranky and lazy set themselves apart from the rest in their own quirky and grumpy way. The cranky villagers are the only villagers with a deep toned voice. They’re also all male villagers much like the big sister personality being all female villagers.

Each villager has its own special physical characteristics that set them apart from the rest, however you’ll notice that most of the cranky villagers have a grumpy quality within their physical appearance, whether it be their clothes or their facial features, seemingly setting them apart from other personalities. Some of them have a distinct look to their eyes, making them almost seem  angry or intimidating. Others even have distinguishing names that immediately set them into the cranky category, like Groucho.

There are 65 cranky villagers throughout the Animal Crossing series, however only 57 are in Animal Crossing New Horizons. While all of the 57 cranky villagers are lovable in their own way, everyone still has their select favorites from this personality type. Each one for their own reasoning. You might even want to add one or two of them to your own island after falling in love with one of these grouchy yet lovable characters.

10. Angus

Angus taking a break from the cranky lifestyle to sip a coffee.

Angus is one of the few villagers you wouldn’t expect to be classified as cranky. He’s always got a smile on his face as he struts around the island. With his signature catchphrase being “macmoo”, the only thing that puts him in the cranky category is his grumpy dialect within the game.

On the outside Angus is just a sweet bull who loves fitness, but on the inside, the crankiness is just lurking within, waiting to catch you off guard the minute you strike up a conversation with him. You may want to be careful with this bull. You mess with him, you might get the horns.

Even with his cranky interior, it's hard not to fall for his sweet exterior. Dressed in his sporty flame top with a smile on his face, it's easy to overlook his grumpy attitude. He might even make the other villagers upset at times with his rude remarks, but he will always show his sweet side in the long run.

Angus Stats:

  • Favorite style- Cool

  • Favorite colors- Black and Red

  • Hobby- Fitness

  • Sign- Taurus

9. Apollo

Apollo was taking a much needed calming yoga class.

This majestic eagle is sure to become your favorite. While dressed in a slick black leather jacket, this cranky villager gives off a “bad boy” look that most players just can’t resist. His catchphrase, “pah” will make him seem like he doesn’t care about anything. Don’t let his exterior fool you. Deep, deep down he’s a total sweetheart and a great friend.

His typical bad boy fisad continues into his music and hobbies. His favorite song is K.K. Rock and his hobby is music. This cranky bad boy loves to rock on and doesn’t care what anyone else thinks. Be careful with this one, he may fly right into your heart.

If you didn’t know the 8 different personality types within Animal Crossing New Horizons, you’d think he had a cool personality. You definitely would not be categorizing this eagle into a cranky personality. Although he has some cranky dialogue, he really has no other features of most of the other cranky villagers. It’s one of the things that makes him stand out from the rest and makes him a fan favorite.

Apollo Stats:

  • Favorite Style- Simple & Cool

  • Favorite Colors- Black

  • Hobby- Music

  • Sign- Cancer

8. Rolf

An angry Rolf got upset over something another villager said.

This cranky villager looks the part. Rolf is a black and white tiger who loves fitness. While his puffy blue sports jacket he wears doesn’t give off grumpy vibes, the expression on his face sure does. With no smile and his glaring eyes, this tiger definitely looks like he’s in a bad mood all the time.

If you strike up a conversation with this boy, you may get scared off. His famous catch phrase “grrrolf” will make you think he’s growling at you, but I promise, he’s not. He might come off a bit strong in person, but the more you become friends with him, the more he'll open up to you and show you what a true friend he can be. Who wouldn’t want a cuddly grumpy tiger on their island?

His animal type makes him an immediate fan favorite. His personality just adds on the final touches. Even though he has a grumpy attitude and can have some rude dialogue, he’s still a beloved character within the game. Since he has been in the Animal Crossing series since the beginning, fans have had a lot of time for his rugged personality to grow on them and for him to become a favorite. Who knows, maybe he’ll become your favorite too.

7. Chow

A happy and calm Chow.

This lovable goofy panda is anything but cranky. How he got classified in this category is unknown. Of course he has his moments where he gets upset and may yell from time to time, but overall he’s just a sweet laid back panda who just like some of the other cranky villagers, is also into fitness.

You may take one look at him and think, “how is this cute panda cranky?” He might not look like your average panda. This pink and black bundle of fluff is sure to bring some cuteness to your island. Dressing in a black and gold t-shirt, he’s hoping to fit in with the other “cool kids”. Strike up a conversation with this sweet boy and you’ll see from his signature catchphrase “Aiya“, he’s just a down to earth panda looking to fit in.

While he might not be as cranky as the creators intended, he’s still a very beloved character within the game. As one of many of the Animal Crossing characters, he’s been around since the first original game. This helped him become loved throughout the series. While he gives off an imperial vibe with his character and his home, this sets him apart from the other cranky villagers. Don’t let his goofy and cheerful exterior fool you though, he will get mad when provoked. Try giving him some bamboo furniture and he may just grow to love you as much as you’ve grown to love him.

Chow Stats:

  • Favorite Styles- Gorgeous & Cool

  • Favorite Colors- White & Black

6. Groucho

Groucho is upset over the age of change in technology.

This character has cranky written all over him. From his name, to his clothes, his face, and even the way he talks. You take one look at this villager and you would have no doubt he’s classified as cranky. Some people may wonder why anyone would even want such a character on their island, but he does have lovable qualities as well.

With a name like Groucho, he definitely has a reputation. When you talk to him, occasionally you’ll hear him say “grumble” as if he’s annoyed with talking to you. Let’s face it, he probably is. He has no problem letting you know how annoyed or upset he is with you. Don’t let this get to you though, he usually ends up finding you later and apologizing for his demeanor.

The look on his face just says it all. While you almost never see him smile, if you become good enough friends with him, he’ll give you a photo of himself where he is indeed smiling. He might not be happy often, but he’ll let you know when he is. He may be cranky 80% of the time, but it can all be worth it, just to see that 20% of cuteness he really has.

Groucho Stats:

  • Favorite Styles- Simple & Cool

  • Favorite Colors- Gray & Black

  • Hobby- Music

  • Sign- Libra

5. Hopper

Just Hopper being his usual cute and creepy self.

Penguins are cute and fluffy creatures…well, most of them. This particular penguin on the other hand is the complete opposite of that. Even though he’s not as cute or cuddly as some of the other villagers, he’s still just as lovable. His looks may startle you, and even scare you a bit, but he’s become a favorite for a reason.

He’s short and stout, so you may not see him as much of a threat. When you look into his deep red eyes, you may begin to think otherwise. With his big bushy yellow eyebrows and his red eyes he definitely gives off a grumpy and even scary vibe. However, when you talk to him, you’ll realize he’s not as mean as he looks.

He has his grouchy moments and he definitely won't try to hide them, but when you talk to him you’ll see he actually has a very nice side to him. He absolutely loves music and he can often be found walking around the island whistling a tune and doing a little dance. Don’t let his rough exterior fool you. Inside, he is exactly what you would expect, a sweet fluffy penguin.

4. Dobie

A lone and happy wolf, Dobie, just as happy as can be.

Dobie became a fan favorite very quickly. While he wasn’t seen as a regular villager available to be brought to the island until Animal Crossing New Leaf: Welcome Amiibo, he was instantly loved when he showed up again in Animal Crossing New Horizons. Giving off the vibe of someone’s cranky grandfather made him a very lovable favorite in no time.

Even though his look doesn’t scream “cranky”, he definitely still has the characteristics. His grumpy dialogue easily puts him in the cranky category. Although his dialogue can be seen as cranky, he gives off a more relaxed vibe.

Most people view him as an older villager, due to the wrinkles on his face, that most other villagers lack in their appearance. Some even say he’s like the grandfather of the villagers. It is believed that he was meant to be seen as a wiser villager. He gives off a vibe of not wanting to be bothered with others' problems. Thus giving him a cranky personality. Everyone needs a grandfather figure on their island.

Dobie Stats:

  • Favorite Styles- Simple & Cool

  • Favorite Colors- Beige & Brown

  • Hobby- Nature

  • Sign- Aquarius

3. Peewee

Peewee working hard with his usual workout routine.

This cranky gorilla is just a sweet and insecure villager trying to look tough. Peewee is far from cranky. He gets upset easily over little things, but apologizes right after. He’s very insecure and is just looking for someone to be his friend and love him for him.

While he may try to look tough on the outside, he’s just doing his best to fit in. He’s big into fitness and will occasionally call you “li’l bitty baby”, just trying to be sweet. He walks around the island with a little bit of a strut to his walk, hoping to impress the cool kids. He’s always got a smile on that big blue face of his, making it hard to believe he’s a cranky villager

When you become good friends with Peewee, he will send you letters. He loves to hype up his friends and make sure they're taking their necessary breaks and exercising regularly. He may even send you a nice gift along with his fitness and life advice. If you’re looking for a friend that will have your back and keep you on point, Peewee is your gorilla!

2. Spike

An agitated Spike, thinking he knows all about math and technology.

When you take one look at Spike, the first words that probably come to mind are tough and cranky. This orange rhino definitely looks and acts the part. If he had a middle name, it would probably be “cranky”. He’s tough on the outside and just as tough on the inside. However, he still makes a great pal to have on the island.

He’s very upfront and won’t hold anything back. He’s brutally honest, whether you ask for it or not. Even though he seldomly apologizes for his tough guy act, he still lets you know that he appreciates you as a friend. Don’t let him calling you a punk affect your friendship, it’s just how he talks.

He doesn’t show his soft side often. In fact, it could be questioned that he even has one, but his love of nature and love of his friends tells us otherwise. Even though his soft side isn’t shown, we’re pretty sure he has one and he would be willing to show you, given the chance. Don’t let the scar on his face scare you. He may look tough, but he’ll be a great friend to those in need. The scar is the proof.

  • Favorite Styles- Gorgeous & Cool

  • Favorite Colors- Gray & Black

  • Hobby- Nature

  • Sign- Gemini

1. Cesar

A happy Cesar. That smile won’t last long.

This tough gorilla is one of a kind. Even though he’s categorized as cranky, he likes to think he has a more elegant side to himself. He’ll even refer to you as “highness”. Although he claims to be elegant, he is definitely a cranky villager.

Be careful when talking to him, as you might not even be able to get a word out without him interrupting and yelling. He likes to be in charge of everything, including friendship. He may come up to you randomly wanting to visit your house. If you say no, he will get upset, so just let him come over for a bit to hangout. After all, who doesn’t love a little company every once and awhile? He’s one tough gorilla and he’s not afraid to show it.

Being tough also means being a big fitness buff. He’ll often talk your ear off about how fit he is. The best you can do is just listen to him. He likes that, it makes him feel important. Even with his bossy and cranky side, he still manages to prove what a good friend he can be and will often send you funny letters to help make you laugh. If you’re looking to add some elegance and humor to your island, Cesar is your guy, just don't let him bully you into the decision.

  • Favorite Colors- Aqua & Blue

  • Hobby- Fitness

  • Sign- Virgo
