[Top 5] Rimworld Best Wall Materials (2021 Edition)

There’s no lack of options when it comes to building walls in Rimworld, doubly so if you add more through mods. However, there are a few quirks about particular materials that may elude some of the beginning players of Rimworld. Take a gander and see if you are among the savvy leaders who know their “stuffs”, or better yet learned something new.

5. Wood

In general low-tech or early game, colonies are going to rely on wood until there are enough stones to build a stronger alternative. What you might not know is that wood is also one of the fastest walls to build, which can drastically cut down on construction time if you’re looking to set up cover or blockades quickly. Its major downside is being flammable, but that too can be applied in a way that is advantageous to your colony. For example, placing wooden walls within a confined room to burn while blocking off the exits could cook raiders alive.

What is great about wood:

  • Cheap and common in most biomes.
  • Fast construction time.
  • Highly flammable quality can be used in traps.

4. Plasteel

Now some of us are likely already raising an eyebrow at recommending plasteel as a material for walls. It is a rare material that is essential for far more essential items or structures, so making walls out of it can be rather wasteful. However, if you’re looking for walls with the highest amount of hit points, this is your best choice. With nearly double the amount of hitpoints of stone walls, it takes quite a while for even raider sappers to break down. While building a whole outer wall of a colony with plasteel is unlikely, having plasteel reinforce key points can be smart. It also helps that Plasteel takes far less time to build than stone, which can plug up holes in defense if the job needs to be done in a hurry.

What is great about plasteel:

  • Less than half the time to build than stone walls.
  • Nearly double the hitpoints of stone walls.
  • Unlike Steel, it is non-flammable.

3. Sandstone

Stones are always the key foundation to any vanilla Rimworld defense. They are sturdy, often plentiful, and are entirely non-flammable. Oftentimes, colonies tend to rely on one type of stone as its main structure material, and the decision depends heavily on their preferences. For sandstone, its greatest virtue is that it is comparatively the fastest stone material to construct. This can reduce the time needed to build up fortifications or to build particular stone furniture in bulk.

What is great about sandstone:

  • Fastest stone material for construction.
  • Non-flammable.
  • Plentiful in mountainous biome
  • Highest market value stone material

2. Marble

Some stones offer practical advantages like higher hit points or faster construction time. Marble, on the other hand, offers the boon of beauty. Walls built out of marble provide a beauty bonus, which can go a long way in keeping your colonists happy while they go on their day-to-day bonus. It is generally recommended to build in-door walls between bedrooms or other high-traffic parts of the colony with marble in order to get the most out of its effect. It is also a great material for building statues to double down on the beauty effect.

What is great about marble:

Its beauty improves colonist moods

Non-flammable

Ideal for statues and other artistic productions

1. Granite

As the toughest stone material in vanilla Rimworld, this is the go-to choice for wall construction given its abundance and sturdy quality. This is one of the main reasons why players who want a more ideal beginning tend to browse the terrain of the planet they land on, as landing on a mountain without granite can spell a disadvantage. Accept no substitutes!.

What is great about granite:

  • Strongest stone material.
  • Non-flammable.
  • Plentiful if in a terrain that provides.
  • Great for outer walls to hold off sappers just a little longer.
