Who You goin’ to call? 

The term Paranormal has officially been used since the 1920s to label anything that science can not explain, that is above or beyond what we see as normal. This includes beings like ghosts and demons.

Humanity has been scared and fascinated with the paranormal for a long time now. It was only a matter of time before we created paranormal movies and television series to add to the ancient stories we have.

It is widely considered that the first paranormal movie to be made is a French movie with the English title “The House of the Devil” and was released on December 24th 1896. It lasted only two to three minutes and the movie was designed to amuse rather than frighten.

Here we will count down the Top 25 Best Paranormal Movies that have been released and are coming out. I have scoured the Internet for the best Paranormal movies of 2021 to create my own Top 25 Best Paranormal Movies of 2021. 

Paranormal movies scare and fascinate us. We celebrate it, we keep it locked away and we make it into movies and series, so today we will count down the Top 25 Best Paranormal Movies of 2021...

 

25 Paranormal: Next of Kin (2021)

Paranormal Activity: Next if Kin Trailer #1 (2021)

The movie is about a woman who is documenting finding her first biological relative. locating them in an Amish community. Soon the paranormal activity begins. The movie has the same feel as the previous instalments while feeling different, the setting is a good choice as the society is far from modern civilization allowing for a different environment for this story to shine. 

It doesn't matter where you are. You should be following the rules.

 

24 Candyman (2021)

The origin movie for the supernatural being. In search of the Legend of Candyman, a man follows the legend to create his story. Candyman returns and wants everyone dead. It looks good. The trailer shows off the story well. The origins of any character can be tricky to pull off, especially to appease the army of fans that a franchise has spawned, however, this trailer seems to do a great job at keeping the origins simple and scary while telling a new chapter in the franchise. 

Just don't say his name, not five times, not even once. A simple rule.

 

23 Dark Entries (2021)

Following an accident in Huntsville, Alabama, in 1977, a family moves into an inherited mansion. The house soon comes alive and dark secrets come to light. There seems to be a lot of scares in this movie. The setting is great and the effects look well done. Having seen the trailer a few times, I will be finding a way to watch this movie. 

Old houses and secrets don't mix. There is always at least one angry ghost living there

 

22 Caveat (2021)

CAVEAT Official Trailer - Frightfest 2020

Asked to babysit a child to stop her from returning to a house the uncle does not want her to, he ends up chained up in the house and experiences all kinds of paranormal activity. This is a Shudder Exclusive and looks brilliant, the effects are on point and the scares are well-timed. This is another movie I will be finding a way to watch. 

When agreeing to babysit it goes bad, am I right?

 

21 Grave Intentions (2021)

A Horror Anthology. Five stories about intentions and paranormal consequences. The trailer doesn't show much, but the stories have promise, anthologies in movies tend to not make sense sometimes due to time constraints, anthologies are best left in series format over 8 or more episodes. However, saying that, this does look like a worthwhile watch.  

Horror anthologies don't do well in movie format. They lose something in translation.

 

20 Separation (2021)

A child is caught between warring divorcing parents, then the mother dies, the child is visited by an evil entity. Everyone is in danger. It looks like a really good movie. Another movie with well-placed scares and well-picked effects. This movie could end up being one of the best movies to watch on Halloween night. 

Grief is always a magnet for entities. Maybe people should think about that.

 

19 Escape The Undertaker (2021)

Netflix interactive movie. A Pro-Wrestling movie set around The Undertaker. We follow The New Day in their quest to add the dark power of the Urn to their “power of positivity”, you, as the viewer, have to follow different paths centred around one of the New Day team members, facing dark magic and eventually their greatest fear individually. I liked the plot, the mansion was well designed, I did not understand why New Day was chosen as to me the darkness of the urn counter “The Power of Positivity”. However this is one adult, children and families can enjoy. 

Why would people who place their faith in positivity want the power of darkness? Makes no sense to me….

 

18 Witches of Blackwood (2021)

Following the death of her mother, a woman moves back to her hometown. Now strange things start to happen. She has to fight an evil coven to save the children. The trailer looks good, the story feels well written. I am not a fan of evil witches, this looks like a really good watch. 

What is it about witches and children? Innocence must add to the taste of young flesh.

 

17 No One Gets Out Alive (2021)

Netflix. An immigrant searching for the American dream moves into a house that is the source of supernatural attacks.  It does not look that bad, the story feels well written and the effects are well designed and utilised. I will be putting it on my list for Halloween viewing.

Honestly, if you're experiencing paranormal activity just run. Nothing is worth your life.

16 Beyond Paranormal (2021)

A woman unboxes a weird statue and starts a chain reaction of paranormal activity. This movie mixes Sci-fi and Paranormal elements. It looks like a good movie. The idea is simple, but the story looks well written. Lots of scares are in store for the viewer. 

Why would you risk your life to make videos about paranormal objects?

 

15 The Last Rite (2021)

A ghost attaches itself to a British woman and a priest is called in to investigate. The woman is terrorised by an entity. The trailer does look good. I like the use of the notebook to show the viewer the entity and what not to do. This feels like a scary movie. 

I need an old priest and a young priest!

 

14 The Sleepless Unrest (2021)

A famous house that inspired the conjuring movie is sold and opened for paranormal experiences. Things get real as the spirits prove they exist. It looks like a well-written movie. The trailer has scary elements and I hope there are more in the movie while expanding on the story of the house. 

Why do people investigate these kinds of houses, guarantee, they get paranormal attachments.

 

13 Malignant (2021)

A woman starts to have visions connected to murdered people in real-time. She has to solve the mystery of Gabriel, described as "a devil". She must solve the mystery before she is killed. The plot looks amazing. It feels very different to other movies in its genre. The movie looks to have promise and is one to watch on Halloween.  

Sometimes an imaginary friend is actually a sinister entity.

 

12 Demonic (2021)

A woman is sent into a dream world and discovers demons that years before tore apart the relationship between herself and her mother. The trailer does an okay job of promoting the movie. The fact she enters her mind to find demons doesn’t take away from the paranormal elements that exist in the relationship. This looks like one to watch for a good scare and perhaps a resolution. 

Even demons her with the modern times.

 

11 Unholy (2021)

A reporter discovers a girl can perform miracles after a visitation from the Holy Mother, The Virgin Mary. Things start to take an evil turn and the truth starts to come to light. It looks like a good movie, one I will find a way to watch. This movie has promise and looks to be one heck of a scary ride. 

Sometimes evil hides as good. Sometimes we don't recognise it and sometimes we just don't care.

 

10 Paranormal Prison (2021)

Found Footage paranormal horror. Entering a prison to get views on their channel they find what they are looking for. The evil spirits come out to play. The movie looks really good for found footage. I am not a big fan of found footage as they always feel fake and badly acted, however, it is different. The acting, the story and special effects are really good.  

You hear evil is in a place and you want to go there? You're either mad or stupid.

 

09 The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do it (2021)

THE CONJURING: THE DEVIL MADE ME DO IT 

The Warrens return to defend a young man in court because they believe the man was possessed during a murder. The last two in the series were good, this one looks like it won’t disappoint. I wonder if the Nun will appear again? This movie should be interesting as we will be shown how The Warrens defended the accused. 

How do you prove demonic possession in court? Do you get the demon to give evidence?

 

08 They're Outside (2021)

A legend called Green Eyes is stalking an agoraphobic woman from the outside of her house, along with the spirits of the dead. The trailer allows you to get a sense of the movie without showing off too much. For a found footage movie it doesn't look that bad, the story feels well written and the effects look good.  

Green Eyes? It's a different name to Sasquatch or Mothman.

 

07 The Accursed (2021)

A curse placed on the family long ago is suppressed for a long time, but the maleficent curse was willingly released forcing one of the family to kill or be killed. The trailer shows off the movie well. I would watch. The story feels well written and the effects are well done. Lots of scares for the viewer. One to watch on Halloween. 

Why didn't anyone in that family line try to break the curse? Any would you subject your family to this kind of curse?

 

06 Willy's Wonderland (2021)

A man breaks down near an abandoned family fun centre, however, all is not easy as he in return for fixing his car, this loner has to clean the fun centre. The animatronic animals come to life and to survive the night he has to kill them all. This looks like a really good movie. People can be creeped out by dolls and puppets and here the writer uses this to employ scares at every corner. 

Dolls are creepy. They are worse when they are animatronic ones that carry bigger knives.

 

05 Halloween Kills (2021)

Micheal Myers is back! No one is safe from his desire to go on a killing spree. Supernatural strength to aid in his quest. Micheal has to die and one woman will do what is needed to get the job done. This looks like a brutal movie with lots of death and story. I am serious, Micheal’s kills are brutal and indiscriminate on his journey home.  

I'm not sure an army can kill this dude, as I'm sure Micheal could give Freddie Kruger nightmares.

This film has perfect timed scores, only to be butchered by the editor. 

 

04 Come Play (2021)

A lonely autistic child starts communicating with a nasty entity via his tablet, it demands the story be finished and has begun attacking the family. This one hits home more as I am autistic. It looks like a really good supernatural horror that will provide a lot of jump scares. This is one movie I hope the autistic character is the hero rather than the one needing protection. 

Seriously. How hard is it to write a competent autistic character?

 

03  Lair (2021)

A demon is blamed for a murder committed at the hands of a human, a friend investigates the claims, this sets off a paranormal chain of events that also threaten a young girl. The movie looks good, the investigation feels a bit creepy but appears to be a well-written movie that has lots of scares. 

Why would you stay in a place that is terrorising your child? They are a vulnerable target.

 

02 Ghostbusters Afterlife (2021)

This is a direct sequel to the first two Ghostbusters movies. A Single mother inherates a farmhouse, in the town of Summerville, belonging to her estranged father, one of the original team members who 35 years before saved New York from the supernatural destruction. Now, these children are the only thing stopping the paranormal attacks in the town. The trailer makes you feel the movie is part of the Ghostbuster Universe, it does look like a really good movie. A must watch for fans of the Ghostbusters Universe.

This is definitely one modern Ghostbusters team you want to call.

 

01 The Seventh Day (2021)

The best exorcist is called in to deal with a case centred around a boy in prison, who is believed to be possessed. The trailer looks amazing, well put together to tell you to see the movie. This is a different exorcism movie, so if you want something different from the genre, this could be what you’re looking for. 

I'm still not sure if the courts accept demonic possession as a reason to doubt.
