One day, while daydreaming,, he paints an entire mural of his former home, which astonishes Mack and the circus visitors. Perhaps, it is time to face the truth that a gorilla’s place is not in a circus?

7. Wendy

Have you ever been to the land where no one ever grows up?

He takes them to a land where they meet a lot of other children who apparently never grow up. Careless and free, they call the island their home and refer to the spirit of the island as Mother.

The story of Peter Pan, a boy who will never grow up, is retold in this 2020 film that looks at the characters we think we know so well for a fresh perspective. Through the children’s narration, we get a taste of childhood and are reminded that growing up doesn’t have to mean giving up on dreams.

4. Wolfwalkers

His daughter Robyn, willing to help, disobeys him and secretly follows him on a hunt into the forest, where she meets a mysterious wolfwalker, a girl whose spirit becomes a wolf when she sleeps. This encounter helps Robyn discover the new, beautiful truth about what wolves really are like and what miracles are out there, ready to reveal themselves to anyone who is ready to see them. It is now up to Robyn to help other humans see that where they see danger, there are wonders, and where they see death, there is so much life.

This deep and beautifully written animated film evokes a sense of wonder and curiosity towards nature and its mysteries. It encourages us to explore, not conquer, and to learn to live in balance with what there is, instead of trying to replace it with what we want there to be.

3. Onward

How does going on a family trip to recover the second half of your father’s body sound?

With time on their tails, they must hurry and complete the quest before the day is over.

2. A Whisker Away

This cute kitty is not what she looks like.

Miyo does not have much happiness in life. She doesn’t get along with her stepmother and, generally, she feels quite unhappy. But every day in school, she gets to see and talk to her crush, Kento, who inevitably rejects her. When Miyo meets a mysterious cat mask seller, she purchases a mask that allows her to turn into a cat, Taro. As Taro, she spends a lot of time with Kento at his home, as the boy grows very fond of his cat. The stronger the bond between them, the more the human part in Miyo is disappearing. Will Miyo decide to remain a cat forever to spend the rest of her life with Kento?

This charming Japanese animated film raises questions of love, choice, self-awareness, and the importance of self-acceptance and of being accepted by others, through the masterly use of metaphors. Its themes are deep, but familiar to all of us and told in simple, yet eloquent ways.

1. Love and Monsters

Deciding he’s waited for long enough, Joel comes outside of the bunker and, with a loyal, four-legged companion, faces his fears in order to find the girl he loves. But seven years is a long time. Is Aimee the same person she was before the end of the world, and more importantly, is Joel?
