In Ark: Survival Evolved there are many reasons to hunt, rather for food, to tame creatures, or to raise babies. Hunting on foot is not a lucrative venture and deciding what mount to take hunting can be a challenge, our list of the best hunting dinos in Ark: Survival Evolved can help you make that decision easier.

10. Raptor

The raptor is one of the most well-known dinosaurs in history, making their way into every genre that discusses dinosaurs in some way or another. Ark: Survival Evolved is no exception to this. The raptor will likely be most survivor’s first hunting mount, allowing them to begin farming meat. Due to their intelligence, they are very easy to tame, giving even new survivors a chance to take a pack of raptors on a hunt.

Why the raptor is great for hunting:

  • Fast: Raptors are one of the fastest land mounts in Ark: Survival Evolved, making it difficult for prey to escape.
  • Pin Ability: The raptor has a unique ability, which allows them to pounce on anything smaller than them and hold it down while they eat it alive.
  • Pack Buff: The alpha raptor will receive a buff when traveling with a pack, giving it stronger attacks.

9. Carnotaurus

Body Image

The Carnotaurus is a medium-sized carnivore, that can be found at almost any location on the ark. They are highly aggressive and will attack a survivor on site. This makes them a more difficult tame than a raptor, but it will also provide you with greater rewards. They can hunt larger game and carry more meat, more than making up for the trouble of taming them.

Why Carnotaurus is great for hunting:

  • Large Size: Its size comes with advantages. Larger animals will not be attacked by smaller creatures. Things like raptors and diloposaurus will not attack the player while they are riding the carnotaurus unless the player first attacks them.
  • Speed: The Carnotaurus is almost as fast as a raptor, however it does not have the stamina that a raptor has. This allows them to keep pace with its prey as long as it handles the kill quickly.
  • Push Back Ability: The Carnotaurus has a special ability that allows it to charge at an enemy and push it backward, which can be helpful in a bind.

8. Allosaurus

The Allosaurus is one of the single most dangerous creatures in Ark: Survival Evolved because they are never alone. Allosaurus travels in large packs, consisting of 3 or more creatures, all hungry, and never satisfied. They have several special abilities that make them dangerous enough to even hunt the bosses of the Ark.

Why is the Allosaurus Great For Hunting:

  • Packs: Allosaurus, much like the raptor, receives a pack buff, making all animals in the pack significantly stronger than any one of them would be on its own.
  • Bleed Damage: The Allosaurus has extremely sharp and jagged teeth, when it bites its prey, the wound will bleed heavily, draining life points from the wounded even as they run away.
  • Size: They are slightly larger than the carnosaurus, making it easy for them to carry large amounts of meat at a time.

7. Thylacoleo

Body Image

The Thylacoleo is one of the great cats of the island, significantly larger than a sabertooth, and twice as mean, they thrive in the redwood forests of the ark high in the trees. These creatures can scale almost any surface, and their power makes them absolute monsters when dealing with the creatures in Ark’s cave systems. They are one of the few animals capable of surviving the caverns of the Ark, thus making them excellent for harvesting all the creepy crawlies deep in the caverns, which will see you return with more meat than your character can carry.

What makes the Thyacoleo great for hunting:

  • Mele: An imprinted Thylacoleo is one of the strongest creatures you can bring into the cave systems. They can swat and chomp their way through hordes of bugs and spiders unlike anything else on the ark.
  • Climbing: The Thylacoleo is an expert climber, making them adapt to exploration and long-distance hunts, as almost no place on the Ark is out of their reach.

6. Megalosaurus

Megalosaurus is similar in size to the Carnotaurus, however, it has several unique abilities that make it a far more efficient hunter. It is an especially tough opponent to fight after dark as the Megalosaurus receives a power buff, making it nearly unrivaled once the sun goes down. Due to this ability, it can be almost as efficient as a rex when it hunts at night.

What makes the Megalosaurus great for hunting:

  • Grab Ability: The Megalosaurus has an ability that will allow it to grab prey and hold it in its jaws, making escape impossible.
  • Night Time Power Buff: Once the sun goes down the Megalosaurus becomes significantly stronger than it is in the day-time. Making ideal for meat runs after dark.

5. Wyvern

The Wyvern is a well-rounded mount, making it ideal for almost any situation, including hunting. Wyverns can kill animals with their special powers, and also with their standard melee attacks. They also typically have good weight stats, which means they can carry a lot of extra meat. Their ability to fly and move at high speeds allows the player to move from location to location and gather large quantities of meat in the process.

What makes the Wyvern a great hunting mount:

  • Speed and Flight: Allows the wyvern to go to multiple hunting grounds in each hunting trip, filling up on meat as they go.
  • Special Abilities: Each wyvern species has its unique attacks that help them take down more powerful dinosaurs than they are. Fire and lightning quickly drain health away from even the strongest creatures on the Ark.

4. Spinosaurus

The Spinosaurus is one of the largest animals on the Ark, and one of the greatest land carnivores in all of history. They are found near the beaches and rivers on every single map in Ark: Survival Evolved. Part of what makes them so dangerous is their water affinity, when attacking near water the spinosaurus becomes extremely strong and will tear apart anything in its path. This makes them the ideal hunting mount for anyone who makes their home near the sea.

What makes the Spinosaurus a great hunting mount:

  • Water Affinity: When attacking near water the Spinosaurus receives a tremendous power boost, making it stronger than even the mighty tyrannosaurus rex.
  • Size: Its sheer size alone makes it one of the alpha predators of the Ark. Their massive jaws filled with teeth make them strong enough to take on most things on land or in the seas. Making them excellent hunting tames for oceanic tribes.

3. Mosasaurus

The Mosasaurus, or the Giga of the seas, is quite possibly the most powerful underwater mounts in Ark: Survival Evolved. Its size and monstrous physique make it a terrifying creature to run into in any situation. It has an affinity to meat and consumes it with ravenous hunger, targeting whatever moves as its next meal. This makes the Mosasaurus the single best hunting mount for someone who lives near any body of water, as there is nothing in the sea that will win a 1 on 1 fight with a Mosasaurus.

What makes the Mosasaurus a great hunting mount:

  • The Sea: The sea is a bountiful hunting ground in Ark: Survival Evolved, due to its dangers many tribes do not venture into the depths unless it is necessary. This leaves those who do venture into the depths plenty of prey. The Mosasaurus will make short work of the prey you will find in the oceans and provide you a limitless supply of food for your tribe and tames.

2. Rex

Image
Body Image

The mighty king of the dinosaurs, perhaps the most legendary dinosaur of all times. Its size and reputation precede it, you will hear it long before you see it. The rex is and undoubtedly one of the most efficient hunting mounts in Ark: Survival Evolved. They have one of the most powerful bites in the entire game taking huge chunks of health from anything they attack, and they are no slackers when it comes to keeping pace with a fleeing prey animal either.

What makes the rex a great hunting mount:

  • Fear Inducing Roar: The rex has a roar that sends chills down your spine, many survivors cannot keep themselves together when they hear it and lose control of their bowls. Wild animals become scared and will flee. This gives the rex an advantage when it comes to hunting, as the prey is unlikely to defend themselves.
  • Bite: The Rex has tremendous bite force, allowing them to take down prey ranging from the gigantic brontosaurus to even others of their species, yielding thousands of meat from a single hunt.

1. Giganotosaurus

Image
Body Image

The Giganotosaurus is the fiercest creature on the island, perhaps even more ferocious than the guardians themselves. Although rare, they tower above the rex in size and reputation. Many tribes will take on the extremely daunting task of taming one to use as a deterrent against attacks from other tribes. Due to its naturally aggressive demeanor, the Giganotosaurus makes an excellent hunter, perhaps the best that we will ever see on the Ark.

What makes the Giganotosaurus a great hunting mount:

  • Health Pool: The Giga, being the supreme ruler of the Ark, has extremely high stats in mele and in health. These stats combined make it almost impossible to be killed by anything other than another Giganotosaurus. This makes it possible to hunt almost anything on the island without fear.
  • Size: The size of the Giganotosaurus makes other creatures wary of attacking it. There is nothing on land that will attack the giganotosaurus, without provocation.
