[Top 5] Subnautica: Below Zero Best Bioreactor Fuels (2020 Edition)

Subnautica: Below Zero Best Bioreactor Fuels
A Bioreactor Unit, Perfect for Powering Your Base

Bioreactors are one of the best fuel reactors in all of Subnautica: Below Zero. They will accept anything biological and convert it into energy. On top of that, they give a clean 500 amount of energy to a base, perfect for your first base. They are easy to make and two or three of them can power a considerably sized base.

Although the bioreactor will take nearly anything, some items give far more power and efficiency in the bioreactor than others. In this list, we are going to look at some of the fish and plants which are easily accessible, easily farmed, and give high rates of power compared to their size.

5. Penglings

Penglings are adorable but, unfortunately, they make decent fuel. When put into a bioreactor, they give 490 fuel value. However, they cannot respawn and are fairly limited in number, putting them lowest on this list.

Pengling Advantages:

  • High fuel value
  • Only take up one slot in the bioreactor, meaning you can keep it running for quite a while
  • Easily accessible early game

4. Root Pustule

The Root Pustule is one of the best bioreactor fuels in Subnautica: Below Zero. It gives a whopping 560 fuel value and only takes up one slot. However, it fares quite low on this list simply because it is a mid-game find and cannot be farmed

Root Pustule Advantages:

  • Highest fuel value in the game
  • Once you find their biome, there are quite a lot of them
  • Only take up one slot

3: Boomerang

The Boomerang is one of the classic food fish that you find in the shallows and the shallow twisty bridges. It will likely be one of the first few fish that you pick up, and it is a staple in the diet of a survivor on 4546-B. It is also good for filling a bioreactor in the early game. It gives 280 fuel value and can be easily found and collected without being farmed.

Boomerang Advantages:

  • A decent amount of fuel value
  • Found in the shallows and shallow twisty bridges plentifully
  • Only take up one slot
  • Can be farmed

2. Arctic Peeper

The Arctic Peeper, like the original peeper, is one of the most plentiful, adorable, and useful fish in the entirety of both Subnautica games. It is one of the best food sources and one of the best fish to put in the bioreactor. It gives 420 fuel value, the second-highest value of all of the fish.

Arctic Peeper Advantages:

  • The second-highest fuel value in all of the game
  • Arctic Peepers are everywhere, meaning these are a great fish to stock your bioreactor when you don’t have the alien containment unit
  • Only take up one slot

1. Noot Fish

The Nootfish, in my opinion, is one of the weirdest looking fish. Found in the lily pad biomes, the Nootfish is a predator with an extendable beak/mouth that completely encompasses its prey before swallowing it whole. Apparently, this form of predation allows the Nootfish to store massive amounts of energy because it gives 490 fuel value.

Nootfish Advantages:

  • The highest fuel value of all the fish, beating the Arctic Peeper by 70 points
  • Farmable
  • Only takes up one slot
  • Found relatively early in the game

Conclusion

The bioreactor is relatively simple to make and easy to stock power sources for an early base. One of the beauties of the bioreactor is that you can put almost anything inside of it but, as with most things in Subnautica, there are ways to optimize its efficiency. I hope this list helps you keep your base running smoothly. Happy swimming!
