Hogwarts Legacy Best Gear & Traits

Almost too easy

There are a lot of gear options in Hogwarts Legacy, but how do you get the best gear in the game?

Well, there’s no simple way to get the best gear in the game, but there are a few key details to keep an eye out for before we dig into the customization parts of it. Like most RPG games, gear is randomly collected by completing quests, defeating enemies, and finding chests; this is the same in Hogwarts Legacy.

There are five different gear rarities:

  • Standard: the most basic gear, usually without any kind of stat boost.
  • Well-Appointed (Green): is the lowest tier, the basic level with the lowest stats and no traits.
  • Superb (Blue): This is the second tier, which has better stats and usually allows you to equip or find gear pieces with level one traits.
  • Extraordinary (Purple): This is the third tier, which has even better stats and allows you to find and equip gear pieces with level two traits.
  • Legendary (Gold/Orange): This is the best tier, which has the best stats in the game and allows you to find and equip gear pieces with level three traits, the highest tier traits in the game.

The gear system in Hogwarts' Legacy is fairly linear and straight-forward; as you procure rarer gear and traits, you’ll get stronger. The level of the gear you find scales with your player level, so you’ll see a linear progression in gear level and stats. To customize your gear, you will need to unlock the Room of Requirement, which is part of the main story quest. This is where you can start installing traits on your gear to really fine-tune your playstyle.

There are 3 tiers of traits, and they also overlap (basically, there are tiers 1, 2, and 3 of the same trait). Tier 1 being the weakest and having the least impact, and Tier 3 being the strongest and having the most impact

10. Ambush III

For those that fancy a stealthy approach, there are times when Petrificus Totalus isn’t doing enough damage to justify a stealthy approach. Luckily, there’s a way to boost this particular playstyle by enhancing your gear with the Ambush trait!

The ambush trait can boost damage while using stealth, and this includes using plants. So a good tactic would be to use the Dillusionment spell to turn invisible, then toss a few plants down and stay hidden to safely dish out serious punishment!

  • The ambush trait boosts stealth damage, rewarding tactical takedowns.
  • Ambush traits can be stacked to increase the damage you deal; if one’s not enough, just equip a few more!
  • It changes how you play the game—most people use spells, but there’s nothing stopping you from turning Hogwarts' Legacy into a stealth game!

Ambush III Stats:

  • Significantly increased spell damage while concealed by disillusionment

How to get Ambush III:

  • Search Bandit Camps

9. Binding III

To build an assassination build, you’d want to combo Ambush with Binding to maximize damage. Petrificus Totalus can destroy weaker mobs, but elite mobs won’t be taken down in one hit. This is where trait synergy comes into play!

  • Binding III significantly boosts the damage of Petrificus totalus.
  • Ambush stacks with Binding III, which will lead to boosted damage.

8. Protego Shielding III

Dark Wizards are one of the most common enemies in the game; they’re at every single bandit camp! It's important to focus on damage so you can end battles as quickly as possible, but defense is also really important if you don’t want to fall in battle.

Protego Shielding is straight-forward: it reduces damage taken from dark wizards and makes it easier to survive.

  • You take less damage from dark wizards.
  • This is a more defensive trait, so it’s less risky when taking on multiple wizards. One of the hardest things in Hogwarts' Legacy is keeping track of where attacks come from.
  • It’s very easy to unlock, and you can get it just by playing the game normally.

Protego Shielding III Stats:

  • Significantly decreased damage taken from dark wizards

How to get Protego shielding:

  • Defeat 100 dark wizards.

7. Goblin-Silver Resistance III

Goblins are another common enemy that you’ll run into a lot in Hogwarts Legacy. Combining this with Protego Shielding, you’ll find yourself a lot tankier in Hogwarts Legacy.

As with all games, firepower is important, but so is survivability. If you’re having a hard time with combat, then it’d be a good idea to build some survivability options!

  • You take less damage from goblins.

There are three kinds of plants: one for chasing enemies, one for attacking enemies at range, and one for stunning nearby enemies—each specialized in their own role!

  • Plants can synergize with the ambush trait, so combining the herbology trait with the ambush trait can be pretty effective!
  • Change up your playstyle so you can become a "summoner"!

Ancient magic is a special ability that only you (the main character) can use. It’s like a special attack with its own special gauge, so having a build that’s completely based on improving it makes a lot of sense!

Ancient magic is an extremely strong execution spell that can be used to take out stronger enemies or elite mobs. Boosting the ability increases the amount of damage it deals, so it’s useful for optimizing when you should be using the execution spell to ensure you’re taking enemies effectively and efficiently!
