[Top 10] Game of Thrones Best Dragon Scenes

A mother and her baby

Game of Thrones was a television phenomenon that took the world by storm, and one of the reasons for this was the massive budget that HBO gave the show runners. This budget gave them free reign to use the best CGI and special effects in the business, which meant that they could show things in a matter of realism that no other show possibly could.

So, this led to the dragons of Game of Thrones being very realistic and entire characters of their own, with different personalities as well. They’re massive, overpowered lizards that act as both Dany’s children as well as the nuclear weapons of this world, stealing every single scene that they are in. Because of this, let’s take a deep dive and rank all the best dragon scenes in the entire show!

10. Fire Breathers (Season 2, Episode 10)

The birth of Dany’s dragons was a monumental event for both the viewers of the show as well as for the world and lore of the show itself. It represented a complete paradigm shift in the story and reintroduced magic into a world where it wasn't very common. These dragons had a special connection to Dany and did all that she asked of them.

So, when they get taken captive by Pyat Pree, it is up to Dany to save them. This entire scene culminates in Dany also getting captured, but turning the entire thing around on Pyat Pree and saying ‘Dracarys’, getting the first ever kill for her dragons.

9. Drogon fishing (Season 3, Episode 1)

The scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbkD4ULPYyU&pp=ygUOZHJvZ29uIGZpc2hpbmc%3D

This may not be one of the most flashy or memorable dragon scenes in the show, but it is a great one that shows us the nature of these beasts. In just a very small frame of time, we see how much the dragons, especially Drogon, have grown. We also see how the natural hunter instincts come to the dragons by themselves as we see Drogon fishing very easily and the other 2 dragons trying to get it from him.

8. Dragons are not slaves (Season 3, Episode 4)

The scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65kwCNlO-B4&pp=ygUeZGFueSBidXJucyBtYXN0Z...

When it came time to start making an army, Dany knew that the best one to get was the legendary Unsullied army. However, the main and final problem that Dany faced was that of the slave master which actually owned the army, who denied any and all payment that Dany offered to make to him, casually insulting her the entire time. However, the only payment he would accept was a dragon which Dany seemed to give, only to turn around and have Drogon burn him and take his army.

7. Dragon fight (Season 4, Episode 1)

The scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RHTw8BxU1fk&pp=ygUQZGFueSBwZXRzIGRyb2dvb...

This is a great scene which has a very subtle secondary message that reinforces the first. It starts with Dany and Drogon just chilling, with Dany petting him. They are then joined by the other 2 dragons, when the 3 start to fight over a lamb carcass. Dany then attempts to stop this fighting, leading to Drogon snapping at her and almost biting her. This shows us that while the dragons view Dany as their mother, they’re still dangerous beasts that cannot be tamed.

6. Drogon saves Dany (Season 5, Episode 9)

The scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OuV3WB2xlFw&pp=ygUQZHJvZ29uIHNhdmUgZGFue...

Just as everything keeps getting from bad to worse for Dany in the fighting pits, something unexpected happens. The Sons of the Harpy have made the entire fighting pit extremely dangerous and have completely surrounded Dany and all her allies and are about to kill them. This is when Drogon comes in out of nowhere and starts to kill everyone around him, and then saves Dany as well by flying away from danger with her on his back. This may be a coincidence, or it may even have been that Drogon sensed that his mother was in danger and came to help her.

5. Drogon vs Lannisters (Season 7, Episode 4)

The scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXlDOH-cMpQ&pp=ygUWZGFueSB2cyBsYW5uaXN0Z...

Drogon was literally all that was needed to lay waste to an entire army. In this scene, Dany fearlessly rides into battle with her Dothraki army on the back of Drogon and proceeds to completely annihilate Jaime’s entire army, greatly crippling the overall Lannister forces. This scene is not only good for Drogon, but also has amazing character moments for Jaime and Bronn as well, the latter of whom ends up damaging and almost killing Drogon. The scene ends with Drogon making Tarly toast.

4. Jon meets Drogon (Season 7, Episode 5)

The scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yiMJMENYFLM

This moment is one of the best in season 7, when Jon is faced with meeting Drogon for the first time. As he lands, Drogon charges towards Jon in an instant, a moment that would scare just about anyone else to death, however Jon stands there with his hand out and ends up petting Drogon, to Dany’s surprise. This moment is made even better because of the fact that we now know that Jon is a Targaryen as well, something that Drogon was able to sense.

3. Saving the squad (Season 7, Episode 6)

The scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLPNHFMOlGw&pp=ygUbZHJhZ29uJ3Mgbm9ydGggb...

When the whole squad ventures north of the Wall in order to retrieve a wight to show Cersei, we see them eventually get surrounded by thousands of undead with seemingly no way out. This is when Dany comes out of the blue and proceeds to burn all the wights and completely turn the tide of battle in their favor. However, their celebrations are soon taken away as the Night King strikes down Viserion and kills him.

2. Destruction of the Wall (Season 7, Episode 7)

The scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=foFFwO06-tw&pp=ygUTd2FsbCBnZXRzIGRlc3Ryb...

Season 7 of Game of Thrones was pretty bad but it ended on a high note. After Viserion gets struck down and killed by the Night King, we later find out that he has been resurrected and is now on the side of the White Walkers as an undead dragon. This is an extremely tense scene as the next time we see them, the Night King is on Viserion’s back and they destroy the Wall together, with the last scene of the season being the army of the dead marching South.

1. Jon mounts Rhaegal (Season 8, Episode 1)

The scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVGANUnG4Ag&pp=ygUSam9uIG1vdW50cyByaGFlZ2Fs

Jon mounting Rhaegal in season 8 was, in my opinion, the best Dragon scene in the entire season. This is because while the Long Night dragon fight scene was cool, the horrible filming and writing brought it down a lot as nothing came out of it and nothing could be seen due to the infamous darkness of the episode. Jon riding Rhaegal had some symbolism to it at least, as he was riding the dragon with the closest sounding name to his actual father, Rhaegar Targaryen.
