When I found out I had to write about the 30 Best werewolf movies I was turning out of excitement! Yet it hit me, that while the classics are just that, fricken classic, this genre seems saturated with tropes. But fear not dear furry! I decided to find some of the weirdest, cliché-defying werewolf movies I could! While paying tribute to some that fit the mould that built this genre from the wolf-den up. Enjoy the feast:

 

30. The company of wolves (1984)

Ever missed your Grandma's scary stories by the fire? Well here's a visual creation based on those terrifying memorable nights! We delve into a not so lovely "love story" about a woman and the travelling man she beds - who is a werewolf. His skin-tearing, bloody transformation made me swoon in an "I'd rather faint than watch this anatomical horror" kind of way. The girl then dreams disturbing dreams filled with fantastical horrors! Maybe scary stories are better in the daytime, Gran?

 

29. Supernatural (2007)

In the episode "Heart" Dean and Sam run into their first of many werewolf encounters. It has the fun, fast-paced monster investigating this show is loved for. This movie-like episode will keep you nail-biting until the sweet conclusion.

 

28. Le poil de la bête (2010)

This French Canadian film was surprisingly good! It had CGI wolves that were quite decent! With slight humour dappling the dark story throughout. A cool tale overall, yaaas Canada!

 

27.The Twilight Saga (2008-2012)

Say what you want about this movie - seriously! I mean that's part of what makes it amazing. You love it or hate it and either way you've mentioned it. What may be remembered as a preteen vampire sensation … was actually … hear me out … a movie dedicated to the hottest werewolves in history! My theory is that that's why the wolves were in such good CGI and didn't sparkle … hmmm?! Whether the tortured love story was really about vampires or werewolves it's worth the watch. There are quite beautiful transformations and wolf features. 

 

26. Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (2001)

This awesome Anime about a bounty hunter doesn't have many werewolves. In a vampire ruled world, it's hard to.The movie is still awesome in monster design and plot delivery. It did feel a bit drawn out at parts though.

 

25. Good Manners (2017)

A soon-to-be mother and a nanny come together in an extremely original movie. A baby then rips out from its mother's womb! And it's not just a baby but a baby werewolf! This twist on werewolf origins was something I never knew I needed until I watched this! It also shows a whole new perspective on the werewolf and werewolf-nanny's experience. While giving us a good storyline and average-looking werewolf form.

 

24. Teen Wolf (1985)

This enjoyable comedy has none of the classic good human side vs bad wolf side struggle we've come to expect. Instead, a young, gorgeous Michael J. Fox struggles with believing in himself. Because yes, Hunny, you can be good at basketball without getting all hairy! That is what I would scream at the screen if I wasn't enjoying the movie so much. With the usual 80s spunk and humour this movie creates a cool alternative to add to the werewolf genre.

 

23. Underworld: Blood Wars (2016)

Another sequel to the famous original. And it did not disappoint! It served up the same bloody werewolf vs vampire action we love so fiercely. With a gorgeous as ever lead there the entire journey.

 

22. Ginger Snaps (2000)

Two death-obsessed sisters start a blood-filled journey through the stresses of puberty… and being a werewolf. Her human sister watches Ginger's descent into fully embracing her anger and lust for power. Dark humour pierced this gory coming of age story. And created an all-time classic that proves women can be filled with animal-like rage too.

 

21. Wolf (1994)

Jack Nicholson presents a terrible day that just keeps getting worse! First, he's fired, then he gets bitten! In his classic tone of angry humour, he gives us one of the most iconic movies in this genre! 

 

20. The wolf who came to dinner (2015)

A werewolf trying to woo your mom!? Ew! What a nightmare right! Watch through the perspective of a young girl as a furry, funny-looking werewolf walks the house as her sister's French teacher and Mother's date.The cinematography and creepy lighting are awesome. The werewolf design is definitely a kids view though.

 

19. Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001)

This slow, French film needs the patience to get through all the social politics and exposition. Yay? Regardless of the wait to see the wolf there is action and blood galore! It's a pretty cool movie if you're looking for something different yet still applicable to the genre.

 

18. A Werewolf boy (2012)

122 min | Drama, Fantasy, Romance

The 2012 South Korean project was truly "can't stop watching" material. Even when my subtitles wouldn't sync properly for 15 minutes. I still couldn't stop paying attention to the characters and story! Its development as a werewolf romance amid real-life issues was elegant and easy to get into. There was a modern way all the characters handled every situation that was relatable and sometimes sweetly amusing. Don't doubt there are some stressful conflict scenes though! With seamless transformations driven by protective rage the boy changes. This movie fits in and outside of the box, effortlessly.

 

17. Wolf Children (2012)

This gorgeous Anime movie easily brings a lighter (still serious) touch to the werewolf genre. Beginning as a sweet romance between werewolf and woman it grows into a story of two were-children raised by an overworked, always positive mom. It then continues to develop as the story follows the pups into adolescence.The story goes so many heart-string pulling places, effortlessly! With a constant struggle of wolf or human between the characters. 

 

16. Underworld (2003)

A hardcore, badass story where the main character, Vampire Martial Arts extraordinaire Selene, traverses the growing tension between vampires and werewolves. She slowly falls in love with the man everyone wants for some reason. While kicking lots of werewolf and sometimes vampire ass! The music and visuals will leave you pumped for the gym! And maybe the next few sequels on a binge.

 

15. American Werewolf in London (1981)

This old-time classic has one of the best transformations in history. Taking up to 4 minutes to show every stop-animation created follicle of turning hair! The ironic unnerving comedy in this film creates an atmosphere to settle into. One minute you're laughing, then screaming, then laughing again.

 

14. Love, Death & Robots (2019-)

This is only an episode in a series based on so many weird and wonderful things. But episode 10 is dedicated to awesome soldier werewolves. It has a give no sh*#s type of humour that sells the war-time aesthetic as well as some exceptional animated gore! The transformations are epic too, they rip their skin off!

 

13. Wolfen (1981)

This movie is a must-see for any self-respecting werewolf expert! Jokes, but it's known as a founder of the genre for a reason! With the first-ever wolf perspective thermographic vision and just as fresh a plot you won't be disappointed!

What a weirdly wonderful short that follows a male escort to a bar. Two werewolves who look hilariously fake then try to kill and eat the people there. Luckily he has his gigolo skills to save the day!

 

11. Supernatural (2014)

In the season 9 episode "Sharp Teeth" we get the unconventional origin story of our favourite friendly neighbourhood werewolf Garth! Sam and Dean doubt whether he's actually "vegetarian" but find out quickly that our retired hunter sweety is just the same as he's always been… just with sharper teeth.

 

10. VW (2017)

Two normal-seeming brothers set out to attend a funeral. Entertaining dialogue and comedic normal people problems carry us to an expected werewolf surprise! The werewolf form is clean and pleasant to look at, and the actors sell it well.

 

9. Van Helsing (2004)

Wolverine as a wolf! Mr Hughge Absman himself, plays the role of Van Helsing! He is accompanied by another extremely badass vampire hunter Anna Valerius.Together they take on the Count and his gooey baby vamp-sacs. A vampire so scary and buff he made you doubt, if just for a second, whether the huge wolf-man would make it. With a blood pumping final fight and so much other awesome action throughout, this movie will be hard to forget!

 

8. The Wolfman (2010)

What a gothic picture! A man goes home - big mistake - and gets bitten by an elusive werewolf. He struggles through the epic bone-breaking transformations and torment of killing unknowingly. Scientists, hunters and townspeople all have a go at him in wolf and human form! This modern rendition of classic werewolf horror was true to its subject matter while retaining its originality.

 

7.  Teen Wolf (2011-2017)

No, not the classic werewolf movie on every list you google, not even a movie! This mention-worthy TV series is perfect for many solid days of werewolf drama binging! The entire show encompasses exciting visuals and soundtracks that only keep getting more professionally pleasing as it continues. I was spilling my popcorn while dancing to a werewolf running! Tropes are broken down into complex people who can become awesome "monsters" like Werewolves, Banshees and MUCH MORE! So please fellow scruffs!  Go watch it and help us get a final season?

 

6. 100% Wolf  (2020)

An awesome twist on classic werewolf stories with a heartfelt coming of age adventure you'd never expect! Our main boy, Freddie Lupin, turned young adult desperately waits to become a fearsome werewolf. Expecting that when he does he will lead the pack his father had led - before his Mufasa-like "death". Well in the end no one gets what they expect and that's why I love this movie! The boy-wolf becomes a poodle, mere street dogs save the day and the hilarious werewolf vs dog conflict is resolved. All under the wise watchful beams of the moon spirits. As an added - the transformations are the cutest I've ever seen!

 

5. Dog Soldiers (2002)

Trapped! In a farmhouse with werewolves banging at the windows. Soldiers hold it out in an intense "survive until the morning" film that still has people talking! This movie is a must-have in any werewolf lovers list! Even though we don't get to see a freaky transformation; the plot and acting are bloody aces, man! 

 

4. Wolves (2014)

A young man with the perfect life starts to change…After ripping through his high school baseball jacket and adopted parents he realises he has to leave! He starts his road trip looking for answers and once he's found a town full of them things get interesting! Jason Mamoa as the werewolf antagonist with the rest of the brilliant actors in this film creates a story you want to follow to the last second! 

 

3. The Wolf of Snow Hollow (2020)

This weird and original thriller could be easily overlooked. In the beginning, it just seems like nothing is going on - keep watching. As the investigation intensifies you fall into a brand new perspective on classic cop and werewolf movies. Now, while the werewolf myth is just a sub-theme in a subtly multi-themed piece. There is an intense action break/wolf scene though! Unfortunately, the Wolf turns out to be a dude in a suit. The lightning-quick wolf-jump coupled with its aggressive attack was still terrifying! At the end of it, you're left chewing on a lot of questions! And you're like: "why is a horror flick making me introspect so much" and then "cool".

 

2. End of the Road (2015)

A seemingly normal dude is welcomed at a roadside diner at the end of the month. Big mistake! Soon his extremely scary, bent over, full of teeth werewolf form is ripping everyone apart! The gore is fantastic, guts spill and blood runs! I wish it was a longer movie!

This movie is amazing! The art style is an eye-catching 2D beauty! The common tale of townies against wolves is flipped into a story of two unlikely friends. A wolf walker trying to save her mother and forest meets a town girl who knows too well the rules that cage them. It's not the gore-fest we expect from this genre but it's one of the best movies of any genre I've seen in a while! Almost every character grows through the strife of this eventful plot and so do we.
