One of the most important skills that many players neglect in Project Zomboid is fitness. But really, fitness is a crucial skill to improve. The skill increases your character’s endurance, increases attack speed, reduces the risk of your character tripping, and increases the speed of endurance recovery.

1) Pick certain traits and careers

The fitness traits

Out of the almost thirty traits available in Project Zomboid, there are only two that boost your starting level for the fitness skill. The athletic trait gives players four fitness levels and lower endurance loss when running. The second trait is fit, and this trait gives another two levels of fitness.

There are two careers that offer more levels of fitness. The Fire Officer career gives players one level in fitness and levels in other important skills like strength and sprinting. Though the fitness instructor career offers three levels in fitness and two in sprinting,

2) Jogging and sprinting

Once you’ve actually started your game of Project Zomboid, you can continue to level up your character’s fitness skills. Running and jogging both passively level up fitness. Leveling up fitness with this strategy is more effective if your character is over-encumbered.

3)Squats

The first exercise available on the exercise list is squats. Players can access the exercise menu by opening their character's health section, and there will be a box that says exercise. Clicking on it will show a list of different exercises, their intensity, and how long you want your character to work out.

Squats give your character four XP per squat, and if done too much, they will make your character’s legs sore.

4) Sit-ups

The third exercise available that affects your character’s fitness is sit-ups. Sit-ups will give you two XP. After working out, your character may have soreness in their abs. Having your character perform any of these workouts regularly has more benefits.

5) Burpees

The only exercise that gives both fitness and strength XP is burpees. Characters will receive a little more than three XP per burpee. Burpees drain endurance faster and will make your character's arms, legs, and chest sore.
