Wings soaring and flames roaring! It is time fellow planeswalkers,  to use some of the oldest and strongest creatures in the multiverse, dragons. This article is focusing on the powers of certain tribes in the game. To best showcase these cards, we have to look beyond standard. As much fun as some of those winged fellows are to climb the ranks in mythic, historic is where these beasts are flying high. We have some older cards, some new cards, all dragons, let's rock this list. 

 

5. Dragon Showcase

Dragons can be nocturnal 

This deck build was short lived during its time in standard and sees moderate play in Historic. This deck earns the 5th slot because it features many of the dragonic staples available in the arena. The cards all synergize well around the beasts and use what it has to help the dragons play, fight, and win. 

What is great about this deck?

  • High dragon synergy 
  • Decent mana base
  • Allows you to play all the elder dragons 

How the deck is played

  • Play lands and gain access to your colors
  • Use the instants and sorceries to hold out til you ramp up
  • Play smaller dragons or mana dorks as you can to build up your boardstate
  • Once you start deploying the dragons use them to attack
  • The more dragons you have the more damage you deal spawn them in and swing out

4. Boros Dragons

Try to make it scrambled and it will burn down the village 

Sometimes you don’t want to worry about mana fixing. Using the enemy colors of red and white, we have an aggressive build that allows dragons to wreck hard and fast.Many of the creatures in this deck are dragons but they have a few allies outside of their own species to aid their cause. There are some instants and sorceries in here too that really make this deck a winged menace. 

What is great about this deck?

  • Aggro play style
  • Spams out creatures
  • Mana fixing isn’t a worry

How the deck is played

  • Deploy lands to get your colors
  • Play low cost creatures to get damage dealers early
  • Use the instants and sorceries to kill what you need
  • Survive to play the big dragons
  • Use the big dragons and their whelps to swing out and win.

3. Dragon Husband 

A wedding is incomplete without wings

This deck gets its name from the glorious union of lord golos and Niv-Mizzet. All five colors are at our disposal but these two allow you to dig for that value and ramp extremely fast. There is a lot to it and it looks overwhelming but we will pass that dread over to our foe once this deck is online.

What is great about this deck?

  • Plays all five colors 
  • Great mana fixing and ramp 
  • Amazing card search and draw

How this deck is played

  • Deploy lands and get prismatic 
  • Use the mana to start playing creatures to hit your value as soon as you can
  • All the colors give you all the removal, use it!
  • Play Golos for lands and Niv-mizzet to let you search out more creatures
  • Develop your board and time your attacks to swing for the game.

2. Mogwai Dragon god

Nicol Bolas, the dragon, the god pharoh, the legend!

This deck just rotated out of standard but that means it is ready to rock in Historic. Using the Grixis colors of red, black, and blue, we can dominate. Draw your cards load up with spells and await the coming of the Dragon god himself, Nicol Bolas.

  • You get to play Nicol Bolas
  • You have his brother Ugin too 
  • Tons of removal 

How the deck is Played

  • Deploy lands to achieve the Grixis mana base
  • Start by playing small creatures that will become big threats
  • Use your removal at will, we have plenty here
  • Survive to be able to play the dragon boys
  • Ascend to godhood using the planeswalkers’ effects to dominate the game

Brothers playing like old times

Don't worry, there are more than just two dragons in this deck. Ugin is still legal and he is fueling this mono red inferno. One color is all the dragons need to be relevant and in standard no less. This deck is on the rise up the ranks for the way it is burning through a lot of control decks.

  • Features Ugin the best planeswalker in standard right now
  • The deck is 100% legal in standard 

How this deck is played

  • Deploy lands and gain that mana
  • Use the mana to casts instants and sorceries to purge the field
  • The tyrant allows you to stockpile mana do this often
  • Use that mana to cast powerful game ending spells
  • Win using the big creatures or spells to deal massive damage
