Howdy. I wrote plenty of articles about turn-based games and I’ve been doing pretty “well” in writing those, so why shouldn’t I write another one? So that’s pretty much what I’ll be doing in this article - talking to you about the best turn-based RPGs with awesome storylines, combat mechanics that blend into an awesome adventure - let’s get straight into it!
15. Griftlands
I’ve included this game plenty of times in my previous articles, but that’s only because of how epic this game is. Do you know who made Griftlands? The same company who made Don’t Starve - that’s evidence, that this game will be dope!The game will revolve around you shaping your storyline with your decisions - whether you wanna mess with people like a jerk, steal from them, or perhaps make alliances - those tiny things will decide your future fate. The game is sick - try it out!
14. ATOM RPG: Post-apocalyptic indie game
Somewhen around in 1986’ two powerful power blocks decided to annihilate each other with their large nuclear arsenals. On the bad side, everyone is almost dead, on the good side, you get to play in a post-apocalyptic hellhole, somewhere in the USSR. Many awesome quests await you, random encounters, and difficult gameplay - the game is very similar to the previous Fallout games, both graphically and gameplay-wise. Awesome!
13. OCTOPATH TRAVELER™
A pretty cool JRPG where you’ll go on an epic, Mario-like adventure, slay a trillion of monsters, and in general have an awesome experience. When I mentioned the Mario graphics, I meant it, the game looks very similar - with a pinch of 3D to it. In terms of gameplay - you’ll be able to pick 1 out of 8 characters with unique personalities and abilities. You’ll have followers that will help you slay various creatures and get immersed by this games incredible storyline.
12. Wildermyth
The game feels like it’s made out of paper - but as simple as it sounds, the game will intrigue you with its awesome storyline and as time progresses, you’ll feel proud of who you’ve become - from a peasant, into an admirable knight!Complex combat combined with awesome characters and a storyline will keep you in this game for hours on end. If you don’t care about the graphics and love games for their simplicity, this game is most definitely for you!
11. Pathfinder: Kingmaker
A game that was heavily inspired by other classics, such as Fallout 1 and 2. Discover new lands and build your little kingdom, encounter dangerous creatures on the way and slaughter them with one out of many classes that you can pick. Replayability, difficult to comprehend combat mechanics, high-tier graphics for a game of this genre, awesome voice acting, and storyline - this is a perfect game for an old-school RPG addict!
10. TROUBLESHOOTER: Abandoned Children
A game made by some weebs, for the weebs. If you fancy anime-styled RPGs, then this game is most definitely for you. Combat in this game is pretty complex, the difficulty of the game will eventually increase as you progress. The storyline revolves around explaining how the world works to you, you’ll visit other characters and learn about them and witness the epicness that this game has to offer you during combat!
9. Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark
XCOM 2 and Final Fantasy Tactic had a baby. A very talented baby at that, the game is a 2D, TRPG with many strategic elements and constant combat, which takes around 90% of the game - you don’t have to worry about slow-paced gameplay in this cupcake!You’ll control your own group of Arbiters, each one of them will be customizable, so you won’t have to worry about running out of cool characters to send to battle. A long list of abilities and classes is another thing that this game has to offer, which further adds to the replayability!
8. The Banner Saga
A cartoonish, Viking game. You’ll go on a long journey of travelling via a caravan, hiring other people that might be useful in your little community. The game takes place in a beautiful, yet harsh climate, filled with hostile creatures that will want to kill you…So be careful with that - with decisions that you make, you might lose your character if you’re reckless or unfortunate enough. You can improve your chances of survival by playing with your friends!
7. Expeditions: Viking
Another Viking game, hooray. This time with a little bit more carnage than the previous game, the game takes place in approximately 790 AD. You’ll give your good old Britain a little visit, behead the local villagers and do plenty of messed up stuff. And, fortunately for you, you’ll be the Viking. You’ll get to create your own character, whether male or female, improve your skills and engage in enjoyable combat or trade with others. Also, be careful with your actions - they might worsen your reputation!
6. Shadowrun Returns
Welcome to the future - 33 years from now on. Apparently, the world will be roamed by Trolls, Orcs, Dwarves and Elves - lovely! On the worse side, the world will still be haunted by the greed of evil corporations!Cyberpunk+fantasy is an odd concoction, but it worked out relatively well in this game. You’ll have a long arsenal of magical abilities against your enemies, take cover behind objects and develop your character and its abilities. An old-school game that’s definitely worth your try!
5. UnderRail
Living on the surface of planet Earth has been made impossible, thus the remnants of humanity have been forced underground. As you can tell, living underground is not exactly sunshine and rainbows and you’ll have to scavenge for supplies and engage in turn-based, addicting combat!Besides combat, you will also have to explore the undergrounds in this game. You’ll discover plenty of creatures that will gladly eat you alive, perhaps not-so-friendly humans or the Florida Man lurking in every corner - who knows!
4. Tainted Grail: Conquest
Another goddamn RPG game, this one is kinda different though, it’s more of a rogue-like, deck builder with a few RPG elements. The combat is obviously turn-based and addicting as hell at that. The world itself is very atmospheric - everything looks grimy and full of death!If you like games with deck-building and RPG elements, then this game is most definitely for you. It’s also relatively cheap on sites such as G2A and it is worth its price!
3. Baldur's Gate 3
This game is one of my favorite RPGs of all time. I spent around half an hour on the character creation and another half on the class selection. You can pick 1 out of 7 classes, they both have their own specializations and unique abilities!If you love to explore and torture yourself with hard gameplay, then this game is most definitely for you - it will take you a while to get a hang of things, but eventually, this game will become bearable!
2. South Park™: The Stick of Truth
This game is awesome. If you’re looking to be insulted, then this game is most definitely for you - it craps on everyone equally. It’s a ridiculous, turn-based RPG taking place in South Park, filled with characters that you might recognize from the show - you can either trade, talk or fight with them!Get awesome items and go on a long journey where you’ll reach surreal levels of awesomeness. Silly, but an awesome game!
1. Wasteland 3
Yeah, most definitely the best cRPG of quite some time. The game will be taking place in a post-apocalyptic world, filled with rabid creatures that will gladly bite your butt if you give them an opportunity. I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned this game in one of my previous articles, but since this game is so awesome, it deserves a second mention!You can expect a team-based, turn-based cRPG gameplay, which will reward you with difficult combat mechanics. If you don’t have experience playing the previous parts, then good - you’ll suffer and love the hell out of this game! You can also expect awesome exploration - I highly suggest you get this game!
