10 Best Military Strategy Games to Play in 2015

Command and conquer!
Command and conquer!

Think you've got what it takes to become the ultimate general? Why not test your mettle in these top-notch military strategy games?

Behind every army is a general maneuvering his forces like pieces on a gameboard.

Such is the reality of war, that those higher up the ladder decide the fates of those clinging to the lowest rungs. Soldiers, tanks, and everything in between are simply tools employed to give a particular side a tactical advantage over the opposition. As for death and destruction? They're the unfortunate side effects of strategy.

As usual, computer games give us a peek into an experience most of us will likely never have – commanding your own troops in battle. Military strategy games have been with us since the dawn of the PC. As of recent years, the quick and action-packed pace of the real-time strategy genre has been at the forefront of the strategy gaming. This list, however, is not about StarCraft, Company of Heroes, or any similar titles of the purely real-time strategy kind. This list is about those classic military games that attempt to simulate the more complex aspects of war, from the deployment of troops on the field to the micromanagement of your domain’s resources.

For the sake of simplicity, we’ve narrowed our list down to the most recent titles. And so, without further ado, here are our 10 Best Military Strategy Games to Play in 2015.

If you’re looking for realism, Combat Mission: Battle for Normandy is your game.

Set in World War II, Battle for Normandy puts you right in the thick of battle by giving you command of platoons. There are numerous technical issues to consider, including weapon performance and proficiency; the effectiveness of various troop arrangements and compositions; camouflage and cover; and the type of damage your tanks can take. Soldiers behave realistically, too; if their morale is suffering, don’t expect them to act like mindless drones who’ll take a shot for the team without question.

Combat occurs in real time but can be paused, allowing players to issue new orders to units. The missions are inspired by true events, ranging from enormous battles to smaller skirmishes.

It’s an extremely realistic infantry combat simulation, and one of the best military strategy games on the market.
