[Top 15] Resident Evil 4 Best Mods For A New Experience

Classic typewriter is back! So long as you know how mods work.

Resident Evil has a plethora of mods available on Nexus for each game in the franchise. Most notably are ones made for 2, 4 and its recent remake, 7, and 8. Ranging from changing models, updating weapons for a new feel, or making it so every new time you look at Lady Dimitrescu her hat gets bigger!

But some mods give you a new experience playing the games you already love. To help you find some new ones, I've gathered up 15.

15. Silent Hill Atmosphere HD

The spoilers for the game hiding away in the distance can now be clouded over with anxiety.

Two of the top horror game series known to date are Resident Evil and Silent Hill. And the most important part of a good horror game is the atmosphere. What Silent Hill is most known for is the constant, dense fog that’s prominent throughout the whole area.

This mod adds the exact fog from Silent Hill into Resident Evil 4. Everywhere in the game has the additional steady fog with only 10~ feet of visibility. Up the creepy factor in the series’ most atmospheric games. Makes venturing out onto the lake to face your doom a lot more eerie.

Key Features:

  • Seamless fog transition
  • Compatible with remake

This mod can be found here.

14. (Five Nights at Freddy's 3) Springtrap (Tyrant)

Springtrap erupting from the cement wall is just as surprising as Mr. X, a human man.

If you’re a fan of both Resident Evil and Five Nights at Freddy’s, boy do I have good news for you! In the second game, the main obstacle when navigating the Racoon City police station is Mr. X: a huge bulk of a man who roams the station stalking you, ready to take you down for good.

This mod will replace that man with Springtrap, an animatronic with the rotting dying body of a children’s serial killer trapped inside it. All cutscenes, stalking areas, and attacks have switched out Mr. X’s model with a perfectly scaled Springtrap.

Key Features:

  • Replaced Mr. X dialogue with official sound bytes from FNAF games
  • In depth cutscene changes

This mod can be found here.

13. Spongebob Paintings and Photos

Bold and Brash now on display where it belongs: in the entryway of a vampire's home.

The greatest artists of our generation will never be as recognized and remembered than in this mod. Those artists being Stephen Hillenberg and Squidward Tentacles, painter of the renowned piece “Bold and Brash”.

This one is more of a lighthearted mod but great for players who want a laugh while replaying or just a reprieve from the dark and depressing atmosphere of Village. It replaces photos and paintings in the game with stills and paintings from the first 3 seasons of SpongeBob.

Key Features:

  • Natural integration
  • Not just contained to the castle

This mod can be found here.

12. Hairless Varcolac

Custom model found in the Extras can prepare you for the dread ahead.

The Varcolac is one of the main monsters in the 8th game Village. Werewolves so hairy that each strand of fur is an individual texture. At the beginning of the game, Ethan is overrun by a clan of them as he enters back into the village.

This mod removes all the fur from the creatures, leaving them with veiny skin and entire faces revealed. Faces with pale eyes and town open mouths that are truly nightmare fuel. The fights with the Varcolac were scary before, but now they can be downright terrifying if you’re playing at night.

Key Features:

  • Compatible with Mercenaries mode
  • Prevents clipping

This mod can be found here.

11. Classic Typewriter Is Back (Non-RT)

Just a few casual typewriters found around this late 2010s Lousiana home.

The saving system for most of Resident Evil's games is finding a typewriter and selecting a file from the classic aesthetic GUI. This was changed in Biohazard to create a new feel along with the new protagonist. Still not fully modernized, but now the save function is via a tape recorder.

But hey! Some people aren't a fan of change so back to the typewriter we go. Both fit the location well enough, so either option won't pull you from immersion.

Key Features:

  • Seamless integration
  • Classic save files screen

This mod can be found here.

10. Project Color

Previously almost a black and white, dull corridor of death is now a soft blue hue of death.

Biohazard is a pretty well made game, especially where graphics are concerned. But a dark and dreary game is going to look dark and dreary. Biohazard’s color is fazed over with wash-out gray to match in with the environment.

Project Color washes that gray out and adds in more hues of color. It ups the contrast and sharpens what colors exist in the vanilla game.

Key Features:

  • More lively-looking models
  • More primary color balance

This mod can be found here.

9. Weapon Sound Replacement

Not going to lie, the initial gunshot gave me a scare so hopefully it works on the enemies.

Capcom brought their A-game in the eighth game with the weaponry, keeping the standard guns and knives but especially with the magnum. But they haven’t really improved on the sound effects since the beginning.

The mod does exactly what the name suggests: replaces all the weapon sounds with realistic effects. Every gun besides the Gyrojet Pistol has different fire and reload sounds.

Key Features:

  • Actual gun kickoff sounds

The mod can be found here.

8. RE2 LightsOn

The more blood splatter to be seen gives you more of a reason to hurry it up, Claire.

Resident Evil 2 is dark. Not in material, though that can be argued, but rather in lighting. And it works for the atmosphere, but the remake gave it a new feel that didn’t quite vibe with veteran players. RE2 LightsOn removes the excessive darkness, the glossy feel, and tint to restore the remake to the original’s lighting.

It doesn’t necessarily make the game brighter, but rather gives it a new dimension to experience it.

Key Features:

  • Compatible with remake
  • Option to remove excessive dirt and blood on some walls

This mod can be found here.

7. Advanced Weapon Framework

A full look of how the mod's GUI looks with all its features.

Framework to adjust existing weapon’s parameters. The parameters are capped at the vanilla maxes, but otherwise every stat can be customized. The mod can also be compatible with other various mods that add in new weapons.

Key Features:

  • Option to toggle night sights
  • Customized stats can be saved

The mod can be found here.

6. Tactical Ethan

Face still invisible from the public eye, but his fit is on point.

Between the events of Biohazard and Village, Ethan supposedly received military training in order to prepare him should something like the Baker family events happen again. And given the sudden circumstances he finds himself in Village, it makes sense he spends it wearing normal civilian clothes

But dang it, Ethan earned that outfit! So during your playthrough of Village, while Ethan puts that military training to use, he's going to look the part. The clothes are taken from Chris Redfield's model so we know they're accurate and efficient.

Key Features:

  • Easily model transfer
  • Includes 3rd person cutscenes

This mod can be found here.

5. No Ugly Yellow Paint

The arrow indicators may still give you a clue of what to do, but it still blends in jsut enough.

Boxes to be smashed, ladders to be moved, and hallways to explore have always been indicated by slathered yellow paint. Just a quick brush easily visible in the usually dark shading of Resident Evil games. Well apparently, some players find the color ugly

This mod erases the yellow paint and also gives the challenge. Unless you have the entire game memorized pixel by byte, you’ll be finding your way through the game blind.

Key Features:

  • Compatible with Visible Beartraps mod
  • Available for Village and RE4

This mod can be found here.

4. Oculus Touch Button Prompts for RE7 VR

Biohazard in VR is already a scary experience, you need to know what buttons you're using to not die properly.

This mod fixes the button prompts when playing Biohazard in VR. The current prompts correlate to the existing controls and this mod switches them to the Oculus controls for ray tracing.

Key Features:

  • Works with all DLC

This mod can be found here.

3. RE4R Valkyrie

Thematic trailer for the mod shows the new features.

One of Resident Evil 4 Remake’s DLC is Separate Ways: the alleged missing link in the main story starring Ada Wong. Ada’s tied thread to Leon comes up in almost every game he appears in and this one is no different. And as always, her involvement with the story is vague with interesting implications thrown in.

The Valkyrie mod for the DLC essentially turns it into a whole new experience. Upgrading existing weapons with new ones as well as a new enemy configuration. It even takes the unexplorable areas from the original DLC and makes them part of the new game!

Key Features:

  • Additional Enemies
  • New Explorable Areas
  • New Weapons

The mod can be found here.

2. Thomas The Tank Engine over MR X

It's really just hilarious in the scariest way possible.

In the words of the mod’s own developer: “because why not?” Similar to the mod for Springtrap, this mod replacing Mr. X in Resident Evil 2 and the remake with Thomas the Tank Engine. Of course, he has been scaled down, but only enough to fit through Raccoon City police station’s corridors.

Key Features:

  • A+ model clipping
  • Appropriate sound effects

This mod can be found here.
