Steven Spielberg releases trailer for Ready Player One

The best selling novel is about to get the Spielberg treatment

Steven Spielberg, director of classics like Schindler’s List, Indiana Jones and E.T. The Extra Terrestrial has revealed the trailer to his next project. A film adaptation of the book, “Ready Player One”. It is understood that the film, much like the book, will have heavy references to 1980s videogames.

The plot of Ready Player One is simple enough. Wade Watts (played by Tye Sheridan in the film) has to navigate a dystopian world in which the only escape is OASIS. Wade participates in a games competition within OASIS, the winner receiving full control over the future of OASIS.

The trailer has been released, and can be found below.

From the trailer and the book, Ready Player One is packed to the brim with nods to the 1970s and 1980s. It just so happens that to win OASIS, you need a vast knowledge of everything to do with the 1980s. From there, the plot will presumably take off and form into a thrilling movie. We can only hope.

You may have noticed a number of references or features from the 1980s and beyond. The Iron Giant is rumoured to have a very large role in the film. Alongside that, you may have noticed other pop culture nods such as Freddy Krueger.

Castings have been made with Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, Mark Rylance, Simon Pegg, T.J. Miller and Hannah John-Kamen all set to star.

Ready Player One was originally a book by Ernest Cline, the best-selling novel of 2011, but it is set to hit the big screen next year. Currently the movie is scheduled for release on March 30th, 2018.
