Should I play the game with or wihout mods ?

Modding games has been a long lived tradition among PC-Gamers. This War Of Mine is no exception! During my playthrough of the game, I found plenty of mods that added to its authenticity or made it crazier and more fun! Mods are a must have experience when gaming. But in my opinion, you shouldn't start experimenting with mods until you've finished the game. Here are my 15 picks of mods that I found worth adding to the game to make it more enjoyable.

15. Guitar Pack 2:

Nothing beats huddling around in a circle and listening to one of your mates playing the guitar to forget about the war raging outside. 

How the mod makes the game more fun:

  • The Guitar Pack 2 adds 7 new songs to the original version of the mod (The Guitar Pack), reaching a total of 14 songs added to the game.
  • These songs can be played by any medium or good guitar players in your team.

14. Civil War:

This mod introduces a civil war into the already raging war in the game. This makes fighting more frequent around the city.

How the mod makes the game more fun:

  • This mod introduces 4 new characters within an original scenario. Their names are Sam, Eisell, Hayden and Caleb.
  • The city is living through a moderate intensity conflict.
  • Supplies are scarce.
  • Trade opportunities are multiplied.
  • You will find much more bandits, this presents a chance for you to earn the supplies by fighting for your survival.
  • Winter will be arriving late into the game.

13. Tomorrow’s Ark Beautification Pack:

This pack improves the game’s visuals and gives it a fresh look. The beautiful art this mod provides will substitute the game’s default wallpapers.

How the mod makes the game more fun:

  • It provides a newly tailored main menu.
  • The cutscenes are more dramatic using the tragic art the pack provides.
  • Each day has its own specially made wallpaper.

12. Crafting Overhaul - Extended:

This mod adds a lot of items to the game.Some of which are craftable, others are lootable, and almost all of them are tradable. 

How the mod makes the game more fun:

  • It adds new cookable items such as cup of coffee,cup of tea, cooked vegetables, cooked meal (2), roasted meat, vegetable skewel, stew, and bowl of noodles.
  • It enables the player to plant the various items in the garden: coffee, plants, homegrown tobacco, sugar, spices.
  • Adds a new economic system based on bottle caps. Loot some and exchange them for the stuff you really need.
  • You can craft these items on thel workshop: canned food, materials, parts, electric parts, jewels, heater fuel. 
  • Using the metal workshop, you can craft materials, weapon parts, and the advanced assault rifle.
  • The homelab new enables you to prepare many things including: Med ingredients, Flu pil ,Heals, Morphine, Panacea, Antidepressant, Paper (20), Cigar.
  • And finally, these new uncraftable items can only be acquired through scavenging: optical sight, broken scoped rifle, instant noodles.
  • Also adds some other minor changes.

11. More Loot:

This mod adds more loot to the game’s scarce supply of resources. Not a ridiculous amount, just enough to balance things out.

  • You wouldn’t have to make questionably ambiguous moral choices in order to survive.
  • You can rest easy at night and not risk your survivor’s lives in order to feed or warm them.
  • This mod increases the amount of found parts, electrical parts, canned food, raw food, water, and weapons parts.

10. Music:

The only thing missing from your gameplay experience is the variation of the game’s music. This mod adds more background songs suitable for the atmosphere of This War Of Mine.

How the mod makes the game more fun:

  • It adds 9 new home tunes (total: 12)
  • 9 new home positive tunes (total: 10) 
  • 8 new winter home tunes (total: 11) 
  • 10 new rock radio songs (total: 13) 
  • 7 new classic radio songs (total: 14) 
  • 13 new scavenge tunes (total: 16) 
  • 10 new dangerous scavenge tunes (total: 11) 
  • 9 new guitar tunes (total: 16) 
  • Eventually may add some more if the creator manages to get their guitar back! 2 new ending songs (one for each type of ending)

9. John Rambo:

John Rambo, the character famously played by Sylvester Stallone, is stranded in the war. Will he have what it takes to survive this harsh environment ?

  • This mod adds the character of Rambo, a famous fighter and renown badass. Who wouldn’t want to play as Rambo?
  • Rambo is a Skilled Woodchopper, due to his strength and muscles, he can be quite efficient in cutting furniture and collecting wood.

8. John Wick:

John Wick, played by Keanu Reeves, is an infamous assassin who tried to retire but was faced with war. As the third chapter of the John Wick franchize dictates : Parabellum, translated to “let there be war”.

How the mod makes the game more fun:

  • John Wick is a famous hitman. It goes without saying that he has exceptional gun wielding skills. This makes him an unstoppable killing machine to any foes he might encounter. He aims very quickly, causing the target reticule to turn orange fast.
  • He can defend the shelter better than the other survivors.
  • Can run the second fastest, after Pavle.
  • Can perform an instant-kill when hidden

7. Cold War:

As the name entails, this mod turns the entire gameplay experience into a harsher and colder one. It limits resources, and elongates winter. It also adds a new cast of characters in a customised scenario tailored for this new game experience.

How the mod makes the game more fun:

  • The harshness of the weather since the getgo pushes the characters to their limits and makes their survival a real challenge. This difficulty is what gives flavor to the hardcore game of This War Of Mine.
  • The scarcity of resources also makes the game harder and thus more satisfying to beat. If you manage to survive the Cold War, you are a true survival expert.

6. Cheat mode V3.2:

This mod turns the game-mode from survival to creative. It is a fun mod but the fun aspect quickly diminishes as every element of survival is omitted. This mod offers significant reduction in the game’s difficulty.

How the mod makes the game more fun:

  • Survivors can carry a stack of 255 of all items in their inventory while scavenging.
  • Traders have insane amounts of product. They now sell x255 of their wares. They will also visit you at the earliest thing in the morning.
  • Jewellery can be crafted for free at the basic workshop, giving you an unlimited source of money to buy stuff from traders.
  • Day-time and night-time have increased.
  • No resources are required to craft or build. The crafting and building actions will also be performed instantly, along with planting, distilling, and clearing debris.
  • Weapons lock on targets with 100% accuracy. Combining this with an unlimited line of sight (removal of fog), enables a survivor to clear a site from the entrance.

5. Visitor’s Helper v.5.0:

This mod is a great help to those of us who are impatient and don’t want to wait the whole day for an event to occur or a visitor to visit. It basically sets visiting hours between 7 and 8 in the morning.

How the mod makes the game more fun:

  • Visitors come the earliest thing in the morning so you won’t be caught off guard and can prepare the previous night for such an occurrence.
  • You get to finish your day uninterrupted and organise your chores without disruption.
  • You can skip the day without the risk of losing the benefit any visit might result in. You just have to wait several minutes for the first in-game hour to pass.

4. BANDITS:

Initially, this mod was designed to omit the mood instability of the survivors caused by committing atrocities. This makes them as ruthless as bandits. But, after a while, the mod started to develop into something much more complex.

How the mod makes the game more fun:

  • It removes sad, depressed, and broken moods completely from the game. The player is free to rob or kill anyone without any repercussions.
  • Before visiting a location, you’ll only have some basic information about it.
  • Visitors come early in the morning (between 6 and 9.a.m) and will frequent the shelter more often.
  • Two new houses are available to settle in (Anja’s house and Adam’s house).
  • Over 600 new dialogues.
  • Two new custom bandit characters.
  • New graphic design for the main menu.

3. Skyman’s Additional Items:

This mod adds many items that belong to various categories. It also tweaks the recipes of several existing items that are difficult to craft. 

How the mod makes the game more fun:

  • The items added may take a long time to craft, and they may exhaust a lot of resources, but they are worth the trade. Seeing how rare they are, they will be valued highly in bartering.
  • The changing of some existing items’ recipes is fairly balanced and doesn’t make the game too easy. This only aims to give the game some momentum.

2. Improved Stacks v.2.2:

This mod was made to make the game more enjoyable, not easier. It works with “STORY MODE” and “FINAL CUT”. It basically increases the number of stacking items in one slot.

How the mod makes the game more fun:

  • The player becomes proficient in trading and scavenging.
  • This mode eliminates the hassle of having to revisit a location because you haven’t taken advantage of all its resources.
  • The items stack in a logical number, it’s not too high so that the game doesn’t become too easy and loses its flair for survival.

1. Endless War:

This mod removes some of the game’s endings and makes the gameplay endless. The player will go through successive winters and the game will become harder as they progress.

How the mod makes the game more fun:

  • The mod unlocks all the locations in the map and adds 2 more to the mix.
  • All scenarios are also unlocked, so you get to choose the characters you want to include in your roster. 
  • New characters have also been added.
  • You can include up to 12 dwellers in your shelter but the late-game. To sustain all of them, you get to craft unlimited traps.
  • The only way to win and end the game is to escape by boat, not wait out the war.
  • Central Square traders will start selling more essential materials, while the visiting trader will stop coming frequently and will be carrying less valuables.
  • Events will happen less often, as the game’s pace gets slower, dwellers will recover slowly from depression.
