[Top 3] Team Fortress 2 Best Engineer Loadouts That Are Great

In Team Fortress 2, your playstyle is influenced just as much by your loadout as it is by your class. TF2 has a wide array of weapon choices with all sorts of gimmicks that allow you to lean into certain playstyles.

While it’s widely agreed upon that the default weapons are the best and the most versatile choices, the question of “best loadouts” is so popular because playing these weapons is simply fun. And in a game like TF2, fun is  enough! So, with that aside, here are some of my favorite loadouts for the Engineer from TF2.

Rescue Ranger + The Wrangler + Wrench

This loadout is a staple among engineers who are playing defensively. The Rescue Ranger and the Wrangler trade the Engineer’s ability to protect himself in exchange for weapons that give his sentry gun more mobility and survivability. When placed in the right hands, this can turn an Engineer’s sentry nest into a bastion and a source of frustration for the enemy team.

However, it should be important to note that this loadout makes the Engineer highly reliant on his team to support him and his buildings. This can usually be counted on in competitive lobbies, but public matches are where negligent teams can be common. It’s in these situations when this loadout suffers the most.

Loadout Details:

The Rescue Ranger

  • Alt-Fire: Use 100 metal to pick up your targeted range from long range.
  • Fires a special bolt that can repair friendly buildings.
  • -34% clip size
  • -50% max primary ammo for wearer
  • Self-mark for death while carrying buildings
  • 4-to-3 health-to-metal ratio when repairing buildings

The Wrangler

  • Take manual control of your sentry gun.
  • Wrangled sentries gain a shield that reduces damage and repairs by 66%.
  • Sentries are disabled for 3 seconds after being unwrangled.

Wrench

Advantages:

  • The Rescue Ranger and Wrangler combination provides your sentry gun significantly more survivability.
  • As the Rescue Ranger and Wrangler can be used as long as you can see your sentry gun, you can play much more flexibly as the Engineer instead of being tied to your sentry gun all the time.

Widowmaker + Pistol + Gunslinger

This loadout is one of the many loadout variations on the “Battle Engineer” playstyle. It essentially trades the Engineer’s traditional role of a building class and gives him a place on the frontlines, constructing sentries in front of the enemy team and gunning down opponents alongside his team. Though, his performance is only as good as the player’s skills as the loadout rewards perfectly consistent performance. The video demonstrates, however, that this loadout can be highly destructive in the right hands.

Loadout Details:

Widowmaker

  • On Hit: Damage dealt is returned as ammo
  • No reload necessary
  • 10% increased damage to your sentry’s target
  • Per Shot: -20 ammo
  • Uses metal for ammo

Pistol

The Gunslinger

  • +25 max health on wearer
  • Sentry build speed is increased by 150%
  • Third successful punch in a row always crits
  • No random critical hits
  • Replaces the Sentry with a Mini-Sentry

Advantages:

  • The Gunslinger gives you more health to thrive in head-to-head combat, while the Widowmaker rewards consistent aim by never having to reload as long as you deal damage to the enemy. These two traits combined will make you a juggernaut in combat.
  • The Gunslinger provides you with a mini-sentry to further support your combat capabilities as well. It’s often used as a distraction since most players will deem the mini-sentry a bigger threat than you are. You can use this to your advantage!

Frontier Justice + Pistol + The Jag

Among the three loadouts, this one is my favorite. One could consider it as a perfect mix between the traditional and combat Engineer playstyles. It also gives an interesting spin to the Engineer’s gameplay by having him play with the thought of having his Sentry Gun destroyed, when one would be usually focused on its survival. This opens a lot of ways that the Engineer can go about the game, and gives a lot of room for creativity and ingenuity, which makes it a blast to play!

Loadout Details:

The Frontier Justice

  • Gain 2 revenge crits for each sentry kill and 1 for each sentry assist when your sentry is destroyed
  • -50% clip size
  • No random critical hits
  • Revenge crits are lost on death

Pistol

The Jag

  • +15% faster firing speed
  • Construction hit speed boost increased by 30%
  • -25% damage penalty
  • 20% slower repair rate
  • -33% damage penalty vs. buildings

Advantages:

The Jag allows you to build and upgrade sentries quicker, and its repair penalties are negligible. Your sentry gun is supposed to die after racking up a good amount of kills, anyway, So its survivability is not the Engineer’s priority.

As the video demonstrates, if you play this loadout correctly, the only time the enemy team will ever see you is when you have critical hits to unload on them. You can catch enemies off-guard this way!
