Post-apocalyptic games are a staple game, you have to have one in your game collection to call yourself a true gamer. Why are these games great? These games are fun because getting to do whatever you like in a destroyed world is freeing. No expectations, no societal pressures, no law, no right, no wrong, it’s a liberating experience. 1. Fallout New Vegas (Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360)

Fallout New Vegas is set in the year 2281, four years after Fallout 3, 204 years after the bomb fell and has elements of Fallout 2. Your protagonist is known as Courier, you are transporting a package from the Mojave Desert to New Vegas. Whilst travelling you get robbed, shot and buried alive, and ultimately saved. The main objective after that, kill your killer.  

Fallout New Vegas is a 2010 single-player PEGI 18 developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Bethesda Softworks.

Steam reviewers state that this game is authentic and has a great storyline and gameplay but you need mods to keep running it smoothly.

2. Mad Max (PlayStation 4, Xbox One, macOS, Microsoft Windows)

Trailer: 

This game is based on the Mad Max franchise set in an open-world post-apocalyptic wasteland where you can upgrade your car to fight your enemies. You are an Officer of the Main Force Patrol, the last few trying to keep peace and order in this world. Vengence sends you to track down the gang who killed your wife and son and bring a stop to their terror.

3. Horizon Zero Dawn (PlayStation 4, Microsoft Windows)

Trailer: 

Horizon Zero Dawn is set in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by machines. This is an open-world game with main quests and sides quests. Your protagonist is Aloy, a young hunter who sets out to discover her past and use her instincts to survive.

Steam reviewers state that this game has lovable characters, a beautiful story and you get to blow up giant robot dinosaurs.

4. Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl (Microsoft Windows)

Trailer: 

This non-linear game is set in an alternate reality where there was a second Chernobyl and the now either dead or mutated inhabitants have to learn to survive in the Zone of Alienation in Chernobyl, Ukraine. As a Stalker, you explore and salvage what you can and your name is Strelok or the Marked One. 

A single-player and multiplayer 2007 PEGI 16 game developed by GSC Game World and published by GSC Game World and THQ. 

Steam reviewers state that you should play this game with Zone Reclamation to fix the bugs but that this game is a must-play.

This is another zombie style game where the main character has to survive the fictional post-Soviet Republic of Chernarus that’s infected with a plague that makes people violent and cannibalistic. Society is wiped out, you have to fight off zombies and bandits and continuously be moving. 

A 2013 multiplayer PEGI 18 game developed by Dean Hall and Bohemia Interactive and published by Bohemia Interactive. 

Steam reviewers state that this game still has some issues but the game can be emotional and is just what you need in a survival game.

A third-person perspective game where you control Joel a smuggler who is travelling with a teenage girl called Ellie across the post-apocalyptic United States to find a cure for the fungal plague. Humanity is nearly decimated and Joel and Ellie are humanities last hope.
