Is Dead Space: Remake Good?

Issac Clark would say “no”.

Dead Space is a game that takes place on a terrible, absolutely horrible spaceship called USG Ishimura - Being there for prolonged periods of time can be hazardous to your limbs and mental health.

We will explain why you don’t want to be on the USG Ishimura but more importantly, discuss whether this game is good, worth getting, or skipping - without further ado, let’s begin!

Story

USG Ishimura sends a distress call after retrieving the Marker from Aegis VII, which caused countless incidents of homicide, suicide, and severe mental health issues.

Of course, it didn’t end there - the dead crew began transforming into creatures also known as necromorphs - mutated monsters with overgrown bones, ripped skin, and twisted faces with permanently angry facial features.

Issac Clarke, Hammond, Kendra, Chen, and Johnston were ordered to land aboard USG Ishimura, without having the slightest clue of what they would face…

Combat

Issac can throw his hands, as well as curb-stomp enemies. There’s also a whole list of weapons that he can use, whether it’s a flamethrower, a plasma cutter, or maybe a pulse rifle.

Each weapon has its uses, although it may not be effective against all types of necromorphs. They can be upgraded with power nodes and unlocked by collecting blueprints scattered aboard the ship.

Graphics

The remake did a great job at improving the graphics and visual effects, it’s always pleasant to see decent lighting, shadows, as well as improved explosions. It further increases the general immersion of the game and will definitely make your pants browner than the 2008 version!

Balance

Is the game fair? Sure, you can set up a difficulty that will fit your skill level. If you are new, I’d suggest playing on easier difficulties and if you’ve played this game at least a thousand times, then go ahead and pick the impossible mode and rip your hair out!

Sound Effects

To be frank with you, they’re not as great as in the 2008 version. The Slasher sounds, for example, sound muffled and not intimidating, nor disturbing. They are very generic and this was a massive let-down for me.

I can’t say that all of the sound effects are garbage - sure, explosions, sparks, and stuff falling over will always spook you and keep you tensed up but it’s still not as good as the previous game.

Replayability

The game allows you to start a new game with weapons collected from the previous save, which means that you can start all over again with OP armor and fully upgraded weapons.

To add more, you can choose to face new opponents, which are a lot harder to kill. There are many difficulties and USG Ishimura is a pretty massive ship - if you haven’t collected all of the audio logs or text logs - you can always lurk around for them!

Summary:

The game doesn’t have a multiplayer mode, nor does it have any constant updates or new content. These two things were also highly disappointing for the Dead Space fanbase and it’s also worth adding that there were no new necromorph variants. The characters were boring and not as memorable as the previous ones from the 2008 version, plus the animations weren’t always good, sometimes even worse in the original game. ‘Nuff said.

Fun Factor:

7/10. Could have been better but EA as always wanted to make a quick buck, instead of putting in more effort.
