Assassin’s Creed is an open-world franchise, which evolved from an action-adventure stealth game to a full RPG. The games follow the stories of ancient Assassins Brotherhood in the fight against the Templars. There are around 30 Assassin’s Creed games published, of which 12 are main games. Here you can find a list of all the main parts of the franchise which will help you find your favorite assassin and his story.

12. Assassin’s Creed: Unity (2014)

Assassin’s Creed: Unity was released in 2014 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. This is eight games in the franchise. The game was developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. Unity comes with new combat, parkour, and stealth systems. The game introduced us to the, at the time, new co-op multiplayer mode. Up to 4 players are now able to play side-by-side and explore the open world. The main character in the game is Arno Dorian, whose story starts in Versailles, France. His father got killed at the end of the Assassin’s Creed: Rogue by Shay Patrick Cormac. After that Arno go adopted by a family who holds a position within the Templar Order, of what Arno was not aware of. The main story is set in Paris during French Revolution. Arno Dorian is trying to expose the true powers behind the Revolution while seeking revenge for murdered adoptive father. Since the game received a lot of complaints regarding graphical issues and bugs,  Ubisoft apologized and released a free expansion, Dead Kings, related to the main story.

11. Assassin’s Creed: Rogue (2014)

This is the seventh game in the franchise, released in 2014, the same year as Unity.  The main game and remastered version were developed by Ubisoft Sofia, and published by Ubisoft. The game was released first released for PS3 and Xbox 360, and a year after for PC. In 2018, a remastered version was released for PS4 and Xbox One. The main plot takes place during the French and Indian War, the so-called Seven Years War. The war lasted from 1752 to 1760. The main character is Shay Patrick Cormac. He was Irish-American Assassin who turned into the Templar. This is considered the darkest game in the franchise at the time. In the game, you will experience a transformation from assassin to assassin killer. By joining the Templars, you will be able to use many different weapons than before. Air rifle was added to the character’s arsenal, which can fire various projectiles. You can use it to silently eliminate targets, or maybe just as a distraction.

10. Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate (2015)

Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate is the ninth game in the series. Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate was developed by Ubisoft Quebec, on the head with creative directors Marc-Alexis Cote, Scott Phillips, and Wesley Pincombe. The game came out in October 2015. It was first released for PS4 and Xbox One and PC later the same year.  The story is set in 1868, during the Second Industrial Revolution in London. The main characters of the game are twin assassins, Jacob and Evie Frye. Their main goal is to stop organized crime and take control of the city from the Templar Order.  Both of your characters have different skill trees, and they are reflecting their personalities. Most of the time, you will be able to switch characters between the missions. You will begin the game with hidden blades, smoke bombs, and throwing knives, but multiple other weapons will be available through the game. Activating various traps with throwing knives is added as a new feature. To move around London, you will mostly use Carriages. They are the fastest transportation through the city. You will encounter trains and steamboats as well. Trains are used as Hideouts, while boats are used to cross the river, Thames.

9. Assassin’s Creed (2007)

The first part of the franchise was released in 2007 for PS3 and Xbox 360 and PC  the following year. The game was developed by Ubisoft Montreal, on the head with Patrice Desilets, and published by Ubisoft. Assassin’s Creed is published as an action stealth game in an open-world environment. The plot takes time during the Third Crusade in the Holy Land in 1191. The main character, who is called Desmond Miles, is reliving memories of his ancestors through a machine called Animus. He is reliving memories of Altair Ibn-La’Ahad, a character part of the Assassins Brotherhood who is fighting a millennia-long battle against the Templar Order. Templar Order wants to take control over people and preserve peace and free will, believing that’s necessary to maintain peace. The game received a lot of positive reviews on storytelling, game design, and originality. But it was also criticized for repetitive gameplay, where some players have lost interest over time. The main goal is to complete missions given by Al Mualim, the leader of the Assassin Brotherhood. You will have to travel from the Brotherhood0s headquarters in Masyaf, across the cities of the Holy Land. After completing each quest, you will return to the Brotherhood and will be rewarded with new gear and upgrades, before getting a new set of missions. The game has released 2 spin-offs called Assassin’s Creed: Altair’s Chronicles and Assassin’s Creed: Bloodlines. In these parts, Desmond does not appear,  which means that game focuses on Altair only.

8. Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood (2010)

Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood was developed by Ubisoft Montreal, with Patrick Plourde as the leading creative director.  It was published by Ubisoft in 2010. The third game in the franchise came out for PS3 and Xbox 360 in November, and cancanPC in December the same year. The remastered version is later released in The Ezio Collection, together with the other 2 remastered games. The main story features Ezio Auditore, same as in Assassin’s Creed II and Assassin’s Creed: Revelations. In the game, Ezio now appears as a legendary master assassin. He is trying to rebuild Assassin Brotherhood by taking down the Borgia family. The plot takes place between 1500 and 1507 and continues from the previous part, Assassin’s Creed II. What’s new to the game is that you can now recruit new members, which you can send on assignments or use for missions. To get new members you will have to destroy Borgia towers around Rome. Horse mechanics have also been upgraded, and now you can call for your mount at any time. You can now ride a horse through the city, while in previous parts you were able to ride a horse only in the countryside.

7. Assassin’s Creed: III (2012)

The fifth part of the game was released in 2012 as a direct sequel of Assassin’s Creed: Revelations. It first came out in October for PS3 and Xbox 360, and a month later for PC. The remastered version was released in 2019 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. The game was developed by Ubisoft studio in Montreal and published by Ubisoft. The creative director was Alex Hutchinson, who is mostly known for his work on Assasin’s Creed: III and Far Cry 4. The player will be able to explore Boston, New York City, and the American frontier to complete side quests next to the main story. The game features a multiplayer mode, which allows you to complete solo and team-based quests. The game received positive reviews on gameplay, but negative ones on gameplay mechanics and some missions design. The main story takes place in the 18th century, during the American Revolution, which lasted from 1754 to 1783. If follows the life of Conor, half English, and half Mohawk. He is fighting off the Templar’s attempt of gaining control over colonies. You will also play as Conor’s father, Haytham Kenway at the very beginning of the game.

6. Assassin’s Creed: Revelations (2011)

The game came out in 2011 and has been released as a sequel for Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood. It’s developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft as a fourth game in the series. For PS3 and Xbox 360, the game came out in November 2011, and for PC in December. The remastered version came out in 2018 for PS4 and Xbox One as a part of the Ezio Collection, together with Assassin’s Creed II and Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood. The main story follows now aged Ezio, who travels to Constantinople to find 5 keys required to open the vault. The vault was built by Altair, a character from the first Assassin’s Creed game. While searching for the keys, Ezio realizes that Templars are also planning to open Altair’s vault and find what’s hidden inside it. The was introduced as considerably renewed, compared to the other parts. Freerunning has been much more improved. Hook blade was given to Ezio, which he can use for traveling faster through the cities. It is not just for traveling but can be used in a fight as well. Various bombs have also been added to the game. You now have a big selection of bombs, ranging from lethal effects and traps to distractions. You can craft them using a variety of materials, on which the purpose of the bomb will depend.

5. Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag (2013)

Game Score: 8.4/10

Black Flag came out in October 2013 and was originally released for PS3 and Xbox 360 and Wii U. A month later it was released for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. The game was developed by Ubisoft studios from Montreal, Milan, and Kyiv and published by Ubisoft. If you are a fan of pirates, you will like the naval exploration that the game is offering you. Besides ship-fighting and exploring the open sea, you will be able to upgrade your ship and loot treasures. There are no major upgrades to the game, but Black Flag differs from previous parts in the franchise. The plot takes place in the Caribbean during the Golden Age of Piracy, which lasted from 1715 to 1722. The main story follows Edward Kenway, the Welsh pirate who encounters the conflict between Assassins and Templars. The main focus of the story is the attempted establishment of an independent Pirate republic in the Caribbean. In Black Flag, the gameplay changes a bit, since it focuses more on ship battles and exploring the sea. Despite that, the game still keeps melee combat and stealth gameplay. You will be able to explore numerous islands, sunken ships, and forts. The player can hunt sea animals with harpoons as well.

4. Assassin’s Creed: Origins (2017)

Assassin’s Creed: Origins came out in 2017, and its development started right away after Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag got released. The game was developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. In October 2017, the game was released for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. The game is considered an evolution in the series since a new playstyle was introduced to the players. Over 10 million copies of the game were sold worldwide. The main plot sets its place in ancient Egypt and is following the story of Medjay, Bayek of Siwa, and his wife, Aya. You will be able to explore the origins of the conflict between the Assassin Brotherhood, who are fighting for peace and liberty, and the Templar Order, who desire peace through the forced imposition of order. Assassin’s Creed: Origins has a massive open world, and the game adopted elements from RPG games. Same as Syndicate, in Origins players can claim XP by completing various quests, and upgrading skills tree with ability points earned with XP. The combat system is now completely changed, now using the hitbox combat system. Attack speed, attack damage, and weapon perks will depend on the type of weapon the player is using and so will performance in the fight. A new type of eagle vision is introduced to players as well. You can now use a real eagle, Senu, to navigate around the map and discover danger and objectives.

3. Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey (2018)

Game Score: 8.9/10

This part in the franchise was released in 2018, and it was developed by Ubisoft Quebec, on the head with Jonathan Dumont and Scott Phillips. The game came out as the eleventh installment in the series, right after Origins. Just like Assasin’s Creed: Odyssey, the game adopts many elements from RPG games and is featuring a massive open world. According to the reports, the game is completely RPG and will continue in this direction with the upcoming games The plot is set in ancient Greece and is following the historical events of the Peloponnesian War. You can choose between male or female characters, Alexios or Kassandra. They are fighting on both sides of the war between Sparta and Athens. The main goal of your character is to find your lost family and eliminate the Cult of Kosmos. Various new gear can be selected and found all around the map. The gear is classified by rarity and can be enhanced with engravings. Like in Assassin’s Creed: Origins, you can upgrade the skill tree according to your wanted playstyle. The game was released as the biggest one in the franchise at the time since the game map is 100 square miles. You have plenty of sea and land to roam around and discover new things, each with the story behind them. Mercenary System was also introduced to the players, where your character is hunted by bounty hunters through the game. By killing them, you will be able to claim XP and gear. Some mercenaries can be tough to beat, and they can even have a wild animal as a companion.

2. Assassin’s Creed: Vallhala (2020)

Developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft, Assasin’s Creed Valhalla is the twelfth game in the series. The game was released in November 2020 for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and PS5. The game is published as an action RPG, like the previous 2 parts. The main story is set between years 872 and 878, following Viking expansions into the British Isles. The main characters are Eivor Varinsdottir who becomes a part of the Assassin Brotherhood in the fight against the Templars. Many different kinds of weapons are available in-game, and Evior can now use hidden blades, which was not been used since Origins. You can also participate in various activities, such as drinking games,  hunting, and Norse traditional games. You are able to build and upgrade structures such as tattoo shops and barracks. Recruiting new members and training them for raids and missions are also available in the game. Valhalla is the most selling game in the franchise. Around 2 million digital copies were sold, which is 50% higher than the previous part, Odyssey.

1. Assassin’s Creed II (2009)

Assassin’s Creed II is the second game in the series and has been published in 2009. The game was developed by Ubisoft Montreal, on the head with creative director Patrice Desilets. The game was released for PS3 and Xbox 360 in November 2009, for the PC in March the following year. Assassin’s Creed II is the first part of the Ezio Collection, and a remastered version was released together with other parts. The main character is Ezio Auditore da Firenze, and his goal is to resolve the mysteries left by First Civilization hoping that he will end the long-running conflict between Assassins and Templars. The plot is taking a place during Renaissance in Italy, between the years 1476 and 1499. Ezio Auditore is seeking revenge for those responsible for murdering his father and brothers. The news in the game is that eagle vision has been upgraded, and now can be used while moving a character. Another cool feature that is added is notoriety. Since Ezio will become more recognizable by citizens and guards, you will have to be more stealthy when the time comes. Interesting thing is that you will encounter young Leonardo da Vinci who will help you translate Codex pages left by Altair, the character from the first edition. Translations will help you claim new weapons and upgrades. With incredible story and gameplay that was way ahead of its time, this is considered to be the best game in the series.
