Baldur’s Gate 3 is a game full of choices and exploration, and that is reflected in its Romances. There are 8 potential romancable companions, and a few additional romantic encounters. Each companion romance is unique, and learning more about their lives and motivations is incredibly worthwhile and interesting.

Main Romances:

8. Halsin

Baldur’s Gate 3 Halsin Romance (SPOILERS)

A druid that you can free from the goblins, and later recruit to your cause. Halsin is a gentle giant, and a fun companion, but his dialogue and romantic scenes are more limited than a lot of the others.

Halsin’s romance certainly has a wildly memorable love scene, but other than that there isn't much payoff . You can however romance additional characters, as Halsin is interested in an open-relationship. 

His romance seems like a bit of an afterthought when compared to others, but if you want to keep it passionate yet casual, Halsin is the guy/bear for you.

7. Wyll

Wyll Full Romance - Baldur’s Gate 3 (SPOILERS)

Wyll is adventurous, idealistic, and a romantic at heart. The Blade of the Frontiers is a Warlock with a flare for the dramatic. He will keep you on your toes with a plethora of secrets, and intrigue to his backstory. 

Wyll has a selfless nature, and a penchant for brooding. His romance suits his style as an old school romantic, as he wants a slow-burn, fairytale like courtship. 

Anyone wanting a more wholesome romance will enjoy their time with Wyll, but many players feel that his romance falls a bit flat, when compared to others with more dialogue.

6. Minthara

Baldur’s Gate 3 - Minthara Romance (SPOILERS)

Minthara is a Drow Paladin companion that used to only be available to players who side with the goblins in the 1st Act. You no longer have to be playing an evil playthrough to recruit Minthara (as of patch 5). Players can knock her out during their fight (with non lethal attacks) and rescue her later at Moonrise Tower. 

Minthara is a very intriguing character. Her actions, and mind have been controlled by the Absolute since her joining. She is one of the three goblin leaders, and you can choose to kill her, spare her, or join her. 

After you rescue her from the Absolute’s control,  the romance itself is surprisingly sweet, in an evil lets conquer the Underdark together kinda way.

5. Gale

Baldur’s Gate 3: Complete Gale Romance & Endings (SPOILERS)

Gale is a wizard and scholar that you can free from a malfunctioning portal in Act 1. He is obsessed with the weave, and has quite the romantic history with the goddess of magic: Mystra.

His fixation on power, and knowledge is all-consuming at times, but Gale is good at heart. Magic is his whole life, and his love of Mystra certainly led him astray in the past, leaving him with a magic hungary orb in his chest as a result. 

Gale’s romance has vastly different outcomes depending on your choices. With your assistance Gale can fulfill his grandest ambitions of godhood, or realize that happiness  isn’t  found in the consolidation of power.

4. Lae’zel

Lae’zel Full Romance Guide & Ending (SPOILERS)

Lae’zel is a githyanki fighter with a fiery personality. She is intensely opinionated, and her dominating presence is apparent in her approach to romance. Players who romance Lae’zel will eventually find that she does have a soft side.

She is on an emotional journey throughout the game, as she finds out the truth about her people, and their true history. Raised in a brutal environment, and hardened in battle, Lae’zel has been through a lot in life.

Lae’zel’s romance is surprisingly touching, and can be bittersweet depending on players choices, and actions. Her romance has many potential outcomes, and is very interesting to navigate.

3. Karlach

Karlach Full Romance Guide (SPOILERS)

Karlach is a tiefling barbarian with a heart of gold. She has a great fun-loving personality, and her eagerness to experience life is deeply endearing. Having been forced to fight in Avernus since a betrayal in her youth, Karlach has lived a life with few good things. 

She is a loyal and passionate person, and you can forge a deep connection with her. Help her avoid impending doom, as her very heart (an infernal engine) burns so hot she must return to Avernus or die. 

Karlach is facing a fate worse than death in Avernus, where she could be enslaved once more, and forced to return to the Blood War. Watch her be snuffed out before her time, or devise a solution before time runs out. Karlach’s romance is dynamic and heartwarming, and definitely one of the best in the game.

2. Astarion

Bonding With Astarion Good Ending (SPOILERS)

A charismatic vampire with a traumatic past,Astarion, is amusing, and a lot of fun to interact with. His past is full of violence, mistreatment, and hardships which makes his desire for power and control understandable. 

Astarion has many potential paths, which can see him either furthering the cycle of violence, or overcoming it. His shady behavior, and cutting wit will keep you on your toes, but it is very rewarding to be a part of his journey. 

His path can lead him to the pursuit of indomitable power in which he sees himself as having no equal, or down a path of redemption where he can come to terms with his trauma, and open himself up to love. Both are incredibly well written, acted, and lead to fulfilling conclusions.

1. Shadowheart

Shadowheart Full Romance and Story (Selune) (SPOILERS)

Shadowheart is a human cleric who serves the goddess Shar. Her backstory is incredibly tragic, and she has an incredible amount of character development throughout the game. If you can overcome her secretive nature you will find a kind heart, and an emotionally complex character behind her cold veneer. 

Shadowheart finds out that her whole life has been a lie, and subsequently turns from Shar. Her painful realization that she must kill her parents, or forever live under Shar’s control is heart-wrenching. 

No matter what course you take, Shadowheart’s romance stands apart from the others in its attention to detail, and sensarity. Her character growth is second to none, and watching her come out of her shell is worth the wait.
