Xmen: The New Mutants Cast - Who’s Playing Who?

Who’s Who in Xmen: The New Mutants? (So far...)

A new X-men movie is scheduled to hit theaters in 2018, but the release date has yet to be confirmed.

This movie will center on the first ever graduates from Charles Xavier’s school.  We’ll have a look on a new and exciting story. The New Mutants team consists of nine members, six have been casted and there isn’t any news if the others will be in the film. For now, we’ll take a look at the six new X-men who have been confirmed to appear.

1. Anya Taylor Joy – Illyana Rasputin / Magik

Magik rejoining the New Mutants squad

Anya Taylor was born in Miami, Florida. She was raised in Argentina and England. Since she was a child her dream was to be an actor. At a young age she landed a modeling job and used it to pursue her acting career at the age of 16 when she moved to New York.

She’ll be playing Illyana Rasputin, also known as Magik. Magik is the younger sister of Colossus; he’s in the X-men and Deadpool movies. Magik is a sorceress with the ability to teleport to any location including through space and time. She also has mythical armor protecting her; it becomes stronger through the constant use of her powers. Magik is a very powerful sorcerer; unfortunately she’ll be in teen form in the movie and most likely hasn’t developed her powers yet.

2. Maisie Williams   – Rahne Sinclair / Wolfsbane

 Wolfsbane's transformations

Maisie Williams was born in Bristol, UK. She studied Performing Arts at Bath Dance College, Making her first professional debut on Game of Thrones as Arya Stark, winning a Best Supporting Actress for Drama award.

Maisie will be playing Rahne Sinclair, Mutant name Wolfsbane. Wolfsbane, like the name says, can transform into a wolf or a werewolf. She has the ability of accelerated healing and enhanced senses, strength, and speed.

3. Alice Braga – Dr. Cecilia Reyes

 Dr. Cecilia Reye's forcefield

Alice Braga was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil. She’s had a rather successful career as a Brazilian actress in many Brazilian films and American films such as Predators and I Am Legend.

Alice will be playing Dr. Cecilia Reyes, a mutant surgeon who doesn’t really join the X-men till later. She can create a force field around her to protect her from physical harm. Unfortunately, she can’t control it due to lack of training, so it only appears during times of distress. The downside to this force field is that she might not be harmed physically but she still feels the pain her shield takes.

4. Charlie Heaton – Sam Guthrie / Cannonball

 Cannonball during flight

Charlie Heaton was born in East Riding of Yorkshire, England. He’s best known for being in Stranger Things as Jonathan Byers.

Charlie will be playing Cannonball, a mutant who has the ability to generate thermos-chemical energy and release it through his skin. This power allows him to propel at a great speed much like a rocket.  His powers also provide a blast shield, making him extremely durable.

5. Blu Hunt – Danielle Moonstar / Mirage

Mirage standing beside her teammates

Blu Hunt was born in California, United Sates. She’s best known for being in the television series The Originals as The Hollow.

Blu will be playing Mirage, a mutant who has the ability to speak with animals and create visual illusions that she uses to make her foe’s fears or desires come to life. She isn’t too fond of everyone else, but does build a close relationship to Wolfsbane due to their psychic link during her wolf form.

6. Henry Zaga – Roberto da Costa/ Sunspot

Sunspot before and after transformation

Henry Zaga was born in Brazil. He’s best known as Josh Diaz in the television series Teen Wolf.

Henry will be playing Sunpsot, a mutant who can absorb solar energy and use it as physical strength, a means to fly, or create heat and radiation. Using his powers turns him into a dark like figure. The strength of his power depends on the availability of sunlight.

Because the movie will be based off Charles Xavier’s first students, they’ll be in their young teenage years. Meaning, we might not see them all at their full potential, but we’ll see how they develop their powers under a great teacher and how they changed the world.

As for the actors and actresses, majority of them don’t have a lot of experience under their belt, but they are up and coming talent who have been given important roles and it’s up to them to deliver an amazing performance.  The movie so far looks to have a lot of promise,  be sure to check back for any new news.
