"Do you see that weird lettering in front of the sun too?"

The release of Shenmue 3 is on the horizon and one of the biggest question fans have is this: “what’s up with the trailer?” Many fans have shared their feelings on the lack of facial animations and the low level of graphics compared to other AAA titles.

Before getting into fan concerns with the graphics of part Shenmue 3, let’s compare it with Shenmue 2 and see where the third installment improves upon the second in regards to visuals.

Shenmue III Graphics from Teaser Trailer

Shenmue 2 was released back in 2001 for the original Xbox and Dreamcast. At the time, Shenmue 2’s graphics were considered state of the art. Although advanced for its time, in the modern day we can see where the game ‘falls short’ by today’s standards. The sounds and physical response of water flowing past boats was done well, but the water itself did not look so detailed. Trees, animals, and people suffered from pixilation at the very edges of each. Thanks to modern technology, Shenmue III improves on the game’s graphics in every way. The character models are so smooth players can see the stitching on articles of clothing. Water reflects and flows almost exactly as it does in the real world. Embers can also be seen floating off the edges of torch flames as well.

What do Fans Think about the Graphics?

Even with the greatly improved graphics in Shenmue III and with fans excited to see what’s in store, there are those still on the other side of the fence. Here are a few comments from both sides:

While I understand that currently, the graphics aren’t on par with other recently released titles, creative director Yu Suzuki has made it known that the facial animations were removed for the teaser. He has stated that when the project is further along, a more polished trailer will be released through the proper channels.

The ‘camp’ excited to see the game come to fruition regardless of graphics want to have a proper ending to the saga of Ryo Hazuki in the Shenmue series.

There is currently no specific day of release for Shenmue III, but the dev team has assured fans of a 2018 release.
