Get ready to dive into the emotional rollercoaster that is, Mystic Messenger, and meet the ten most unforgettable characters!

10. Echo Girl

The malicious beauty known as “Echo Girl” poses innocently for the camera.

  • What would a compelling romance game be without a potential rival to both stir things up and unite people? Echo Girl, as irritating as she may be, became the force that brought long-standing rivals Jumin and Zen together.
  • It was both infuriating yet satisfying to witness how she nearly shattered Zen with her accusations, but surprisingly, it was Jumin who, of all people, utilized both his wit and resources to prevent it from going too far.
  • Beyond the entertaining drama, Echo Girl's story carries a deeper significance. It serves as a lesson about the grave consequences of lying and how a lie that has gone too far could single-handedly destroy someone’s life.

9. Sarah Choi

Sarah Choi staring through the player’s soul in her official character art.

  • Speaking of dramatic foes, Sarah Choi, a well-known business powerhouse who was convinced Jumin would marry and elope with her, stands out. However, MC had different ideas and a knack for delivering hilarious taunts. Even someone as stern as Jumin couldn't resist joining in on the well-deserved teasing.

Gotta be quicker than that! Jumin teases and shows his disinterest in Sarah.

  • Unlike Echo Girl, Sarah was highly strategic in her manipulation. Aware that Jumin's father couldn't refuse a young woman, she hoped Jumin would react similarly. What makes Sarah's storyline intriguing is that despite her calculated nature, she remained oblivious to being used as a pawn herself.
  • Jumin's Father saw it as a great business move for Jumin to marry Sarah, not for love, but rather for the sake of finances. Fortunately, Jumin recognized this, making it even harder for Sarah. Unfortunately, she remained stubborn and truly showed that money could make someone blind.

8. Rika

Rika putting on her usual cheerful facade.

  • Most Mystic Messenger players unanimously agree that, regardless of perspective, Rika is highly unlikable, however, it is undeniable that she played a crucial role in the game's plot, and strangely, this contributes to the complexity of why she is both disliked and incredibly memorable.
  • At the start, the player may feel sympathetic towards the characters grieving for Rika, especially Yoosung, who struggles without his beloved cousin. However, it's later revealed that it was all a deception, as Rika was elsewhere perpetrating evil without regard for anyone, not even those who loved her most.
  • Her story is unforgettable because it takes players on an emotional roller coaster. There's a desire to pity her due to her trauma; however, no amount of trauma justifies inflicting physical harm on others or starting a cult simply to inflict more pain on the innocent. Despite her unlikeable nature, her storyline is extremely important to the game and without it, the plot would have been weakened.

7. V

V is looking awfully mysterious in his character profile.

  • No matter the opinion, it's undeniable that V stands as one of the most solid characters in Mystic Messenger and mentioning Rika without her infamous loverboy, V, is impossible to do. His mysterious presence alone leaves you pondering the lore behind him.
  • It is hard not to have conflicted feelings towards V. Despite enduring so much at the hands of Rika, he remained silent about what was happening behind closed doors and the chaos she planned to bring to V’s friends. In some aspects, he's quite relatable, being someone who would do anything to protect the one he held most dear, albeit with certain exceptions.
  • V is often faulted for not being open with the RFA about Rika, which overshadows his innocent and timid persona he once tried to portray. V's story, alongside Rika's, represents the hidden gems of Mystic Messenger.

6. Zen

A ray of sunshine in the dead of night, Zen gleefully asks to hold the player’s hand.

  •  If he saw where he ranked on this list, he would probably faint, but a rank does not make his character any less lovable. Just as the other characters, Zen has many layers. Although he comes off as conceited at first, he’s actually a giant teddy bear.
  • Regardless of his relationship dynamic with the RFA members, Zen strives to be there for them whenever possible and is willing to fight for what he believes is right. He's also not one to leverage his fame over his adoring fans, showing a humble attitude despite his celebrity status.
  • An interesting side fact is that Zen's body heals remarkably quickly after an injury, leading the members to think that Zen might not be of this world.

5. Jaehee Kang

Jaehee is getting out of the car with a look of determination.

  •  Jaehee is an unforgettable character because she is one of the most relatable. Initially seeming bland, as her story progressed, so did she, revealing a depth that captivated players.
  • Similar to the everyday person, Jaehee strives to find time for herself amid a hectic work schedule. Additionally, she grapples with internal conflicts from her past, which repeatedly holds her back.
  • Jaehee's character emphasizes the significance of self-care while striving to become the person you've always envisioned yourself to be. Her story also highlights the importance of a work-life balance.

4. Jumin Han

Jumin Han
Jumin confessing his feelings for MC and making all of our hearts skip a beat.

  • Jumin could be compared to a rare delicacy, for in order to truly appreciate his character, you will need to harbor an "acquired taste,".  Yet, that is all part of this beloved spoiled brat’s charm.
  • Initially, he comes off as a snobby businessman or a "trust fund kid," as Zen calls him, but as his story unfolds, you discover that his life was anything but easy. Having been forced to grow up quickly, there are certain enjoyable things that Jumin does not understand, and it becomes quite entertaining to educate him.
  • Throughout the course of his route, it is interesting to watch him go from this cold block of ice to this carefree man all because of the MC and RFA who taught him to live a little. You learn that this man who seems to care for no one, with the exception of his beloved cat,  actually has his own worries, and his nonchalant attitude is nothing more than a mask.

3. Yoosung Kim

Did it just get brighter in here or is it just Yoosung smiling brightly for a photo again?

  • What is not to love a Yoosung's character, whether platonically or romantically. Initially appearing as a crybaby, as his story unfolds, he gradually wins you over. It is hard not to want to coddle him, but you soon learn that being too soft with a character like Yoosung does more harm than good.
  • Depending on the route you choose, you can get either a sour or a sweet Yoosung, but every ending will keep you on the edge of your seat. Your choices and interactions with Yoosung will reveal different facets of his personality.
  • Yoosung's dual personality adds to his development, making him an intriguing character. It is as if you are shaping the Yoosung you desire, crafting a unique experience based on your interactions and choices throughout the game.

2. 707 and Unknown (The Choi twins)

The Choi Twins sleeping peacefully on the home screen during their birthday month.

  • The storyline involving Seven and his twin brother Saeran, also known as "Unknown," delves into profound depths. Despite Seven's upbeat and energetic nature, it carries its own darkness, intertwined with the complexities of his relationship with Saeran.
  • Their dynamic is particularly unusual, rooted in miscommunication that led to their drifting apart. Seven believed leaving their traumatic childhood behind would be better for Saeran, but this action made Saeran feel abandoned, causing a significant rift in their once strong bond.
  • Their storyline is undeniably the most compelling among the other members, filled with numerous twists and turns. It is difficult not to become deeply attached to the intricate lore surrounding the twins.

1. The MC (YOU!)

Different default player icons a player can choose from, but all will endure the same shenanigans.

  • The game's storylines are strongly dependent on your responses and your activity within the game. What truly sets the MC apart and earns them the top ranking is the diverse array of masks they can wear throughout the game. As the player navigates the story, the MC's adaptability, and the multifaceted nature of their interactions with the characters are what truly set them apart.
  •  Depending on the choices made, the MC can exhibit qualities ranging from empathetic and nurturing, to assertive and even enigmatic. This flexibility allows players to craft a unique personality for the MC, shaping the overall experience and contributing to the game's depth and replay value.
  • The MC can embody traits ranging from loving and empathetic to cold or even somewhat of a boy crazy gold digger, allowing for an extensive range of character expressions. Without the MC guiding the story, the deep stories and complexities of each character would remain unknown. Being the MC of the game can be stressful at times, but it isrewarding with the lessons learned and the stories told.
