The Star Wars saga is a tale of family, friends, hope. With the amazing world-building done by George Lucas, there have been eye-dropping fight scenes to accompany the Star Wars universe. This list contains the top 15 Star Wars fight scenes that have been released as of January 2021.

15. Ahsoka Tano vs. The Magistrate (Mandalorian Season 2)

During The Mandalorian season 2, Mando meets with Ashoka Tano. He asks Ashoka to take care of Grogu because he uses the force like the Jedi of old. In return, Ashoka asks for Mando’s help in taking down the village controlled by the Magistrate leading to this battle. This battle was always cool to watch because it showed Ashoka’s lightsabers unable to cut through the pure Beskar staff the Magistrate wielded. Ashoka had to rely on her knowledge and skill with a lightsaber to outmaneuver the Magistrate. Watching the pure white lightsaber color of the blade was also cool because it symbolized that Ashoka was technically a Gray Jedi.

14. Obi-Wan Kenobi vs. Darth Vader (A New Hope)

The first lightsaber fight in the Star Wars universe! What more needs to be said than this! While watching this fight, one can see the influences that Kendo had on lightsaber combat and how George Lucas imagined lightsaber combat to be. The audience understands that there was more to Star Wars than just lightsaber combat. I was able to recognize that at this point, Obi-Wan was able to give in to the force as he had been protecting Luke Skywalker since he was born. Obi-Wan passed on the torch in this fight scene.

13. Mando vs. Gideon (Mandalorian Season 2)

Mando and his team land on Moff Gideon’s ship to rescue Grogu. Mando starts to fight Moff Gideon who is wielding the DarkSaber. In this fight, you can see that Moff Gideon has no melee combat experience that matches Mando. Moff Gideon relies solely on the power of the DarkSaber whereas Mando relies on his combat experience to carry the fight. The audience can also see that Mando fights to protect Grogu while Moff Gideon is fighting to preserve his power.

12. Mace Windu and Jedi vs. Darth Sidious (Revenge of the Sith)

We see one of the very few beings to ever overpower Darth Sidious. This is when Anakin takes the final step in turning to the dark side of the force and protects Darth Sidious. We can see why Mace Windu was different from other Jedi. He was closer to a Gray Jedi, rather than a regular Jedi as he was trying to kill Darth Sidious instead of just capturing him.

11. Obi-Wan Kenobi vs. Jango Fett (Attack of the Clones)

During this fight, we watch one of the best bounty hunters fight Obi-Wan Kenobi. The reason this fight is important is that we can see both Jango Fett and Obi-Wan are evenly matched. This can convince the audience of how strong the clone troopers can be. This doesn’t mean that each of the clone troopers is equivalent to a Jedi, but it showcases that the Kaminoans chose Jango Fett’s DNA for a reason.

10. Yoda vs. Darth Sidious (Revenge of the Sith)

Yoda and Darth Sidious were both the most powerful at the time for the Dark Side and the Light Side. During the fight, Darth Sidious uses the Senate pods to throw at Yoda. This was symbolic of Darth Sidious having the power of the force and the government, using that to conquer Yoda. Yoda realizes that he has lost and goes into exile.

9. Count Dooku vs. Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, and Yoda (Attack of the Clones)

When I watched this fight for the first time in theaters, everyone started cheering when Yoda unsheathed his lightsaber and started to fight Count Dooku. The way that Yoda spun and hopped around brought a smile and happiness to everyone in the movie theater. This fight was the showcase for how great Jedi Grandmaster Yoda was in lightsaber combat.

8. General Pong Krell vs. Clones (Clone Wars season 4)

This was one of my favorite scenes to watch because the clones did not have the support of a Jedi to fight General Pong Krell. The clones had to use intuition and clever tactics to overpower the treacherous Jedi. One of my favorite aspects about this scene is that it is the first time we can see the clones overpowering a force user. This is a foreshadowing to Order 66 and how the clones had the potential to kill the Jedi. 

7. Darth Maul vs. Ahsoka Tano (Clone Wars final season)

This scene was the climactic ending of Clone Wars the final season and there were no shortcomings when Lucasfilm produced it. Along with the lightsaber combat which was created using tracking technology on actual stunt doubles, the symbolic implications also brought the scene to an all-time high. Ahsoka was fighting to try to save Anakin while Darth Maul was fighting to stop him from destroying the galaxy. When these two put their lives on the line for their ideals, Anakin, who they were fighting for, was turning to the Dark Side.

6. Luke Skywalker vs. Darth Vader (The Empire Strikes back)

Taking place on Bespin, Luke Skywalker left his training early under the warning from Yoda to try to save his friends. This was the first time that Luke and Darth Vader battled. You can see in this fight that Luke Skywalker is not ready to battle against the Dark Lord as he is overpowered very easily. He ends up losing his arm as a result and learns that Darth Vader is his father. Although Luke lost, it was a learning experience for him as he realized how strong he had to be to defeat Darth Vader. 

5. Luke Skywalker vs Darth Vader and Darth Sidious (Return of the Jedi)

This fight was very significant as we see Luke Skywalker overpower Darth Vader using his hatred and aggression. During this fight, you can see Luke struggling with the Dark Side and the Light Side of the force until he eventually doesn’t fight any longer siding with the Light Side. Along with this, we also see Darth Vader (Anakin) kill Darth Sidious by throwing him into the reactor. By doing this, he finally becomes the chosen one to bring balance to the force and save his son, Luke, proving that family is stronger than the power of the Dark Side.  

4. Obi-Wan Kenobi vs. Anakin Skywalker

One of the most tragic movie scenes ever witnessed, the fight between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker hit the Star Wars universe deep as we saw brother fight brother. Obi-Wan Kenobi knew that the padawan he trained had succumbed to the Dark Side and that there was no return. As the fight grew on, there was no clear winner. Anakin decided that he would use the flip that Obi-Wan used on Darth Maul, and Obi-Wan knew he was going to use it. Obi-Wan then struck down his old padawan and left him to die. He could not bring himself to end Anakin himself. This was one of the best lightsaber battles ever displayed.

3. Darth Maul vs Obi-Wan and Qui Gon Jinn (Phantom Menace)

This fight was the showcase for the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy. By displaying Darth Maul as a dual-wielding lightsaber Sith, George Lucas showed us that the Sith are no laughing matter. Darth Maul killed Qui Gon Jinn and was barely finished off by Obi-Wan Kenobi. Along with the amazing choreography in this lightsaber battle, the Dual of the Fates had a deeper meaning in the Star Wars Universe. Qui Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan were fighting for the fate of Anakin Skywalker. With Qui Gon Jinn losing, Anakin did not have the father figure he needed to grow into the Jedi that was meant to bring balance to the force. In this battle, the Sith won in the fate of Anakin Skywalker. 

2. Darth Vader vs the Rebels (Rogue One)

In this scene that wasn’t intended to be in the film, the rebels are transporting the stolen Death Star plans to Princess Leia to give to the Rebellion. The producers of the show wanted to give Darth Vader a last show of power. In the scene, you can see the fearful the Dark Lord is as he approaches and cuts apart the Rebels with ease. Along with this display of force, the end scene of Rogue One connects with the beginning of A New Hope. This scene was my favorite showcase of how powerful Darth Vader is. 

1. Darth Maul and Savage Opress vs. Darth Sidious (Clone Wars season 5)

My all-time favorite fight scene in the entire Star Wars saga is Darth Maul and Savage Opress battling against Darth Sidious. There are many different aspects of the fight that the creators put in for the audience. First, they show that Darth Sidious considered Darth Maul’s meteoric rise to power as a rival that he had to personally interfere with. Two, Darth Maul was scared of his master as shown in the lightsaber form he took when facing him. Three, Darth Sidious toyed with Darth Maul and Savage Opress while displaying his mastery of all lightsaber combat forms. Four, Darth Maul cared for Savage Opress as a brother. All of these aspects, in four minutes, make this fight scene the greatest fight scene in the Star Wars universe.
