The Truth Behind the Delay in The Elder Scrolls VI

The Elder Scrolls franchise has been going since 1994 with no signs of slowing down.

The Elder Scrolls 6 Won’t Be Coming Anytime Soon

Everyone loves some Elder Scrolls, and if they say they don’t, chances are they just haven’t played the right game. The franchise has been around since 1994, that’s over 20 years and there has only been 5 games released, plus the MMORPG Online. Game developer Bethesda has released games pretty regularly, however Elder Scrolls VI has been a long time coming.

The last installment V: Skyrim was released in November 2011, before that, IV: Oblivion in March 2006. That’s a 5 and a half year wait… but we are coming close to six years between releases and there is still no whisper of VI coming out. In fact, at this year’s E3 when fans expected to hear something about it, they were told it wasn’t actually a priority at the minute.

Why the delay?

Basically, Bethesda and ZeniMax are focusing on two other games before they even think about VI. Which is probably true, I mean the company is not just Elder Scrolls, it’s also Fallout, Doom, Wolfenstein, Dishonoured.. The list goes on. So it does make sense that they focus on making something else outside of Tamriel.

However, I think the real reason they are hesitant to start production on VI is that they have already got two successful versions of the franchise going on right now.

Skyrim will be released in virtual reality later this year

They keep releasing new content and new ways to play Skyrim. There is so much DLC available on Steam for it, plus, it’s now being released for Nintendo Switch, VR, and a creation centre to make endless mods for it. There is obviously still so much love for Skyrim, 6 years later, and they are making the most of it.

There is also The Elder Scrolls Online, an MMORPG set in Tamriel. It was released in 2014 to a lot of critics saying it just doesn’t feel like an Elder Scrolls game, and while it’s definitely not the same as Skyrim or Oblivion, it is incredible in its own right. Bethesda are continually releasing content and expansions for ESO, such as Morrowind which was just released this month.

Morrowind is the latest expansion in ESO, taking us back to the world of Elder Scrolls III.

VI is definitely in the future… the far future

So basically, if the Bethesda start to work on Elder Scrolls VI, they will be taking their developers, programmers, and chief idea engineers away from their two already successful outlets. It would be shooting themselves in the foot while things are going so swell for them. I don’t see them even thinking about VI until the hype for Skyrim dies down, and since they are still releasing content (heck I’m giving it another replay at the minute too!), I just don’t see this happening any time soon.

So if you hear anyone spreading some rumors about it, be skeptical, they are probably false. Unless it’s this article over at Frag Hero, which is 100% the truth. This Elder Scrolls obsessed journalist will absolutely be the first to bring you any news about the long hoped for VI.
