Protecting yourself against mobs and enemies is an important key to survival in Minecraft. One important piece of armor players should equip is the helmet. Helmets have a total of 11 possible enchantments for players to choose from.

Today I’m going to be counting down the top 10 enchantments for the helmet in Minecraft.

NOTICE: *the enchantment not included on this list is Curse of Binding.*

10. Curse of Vanishing

Kicking off my list is Curse of Vanishing. This enchantment is certainly one that may prove to come in handy but isn’t necessarily a go-to enchantment for players. Curse of Vanishing has a maximum enchantment level of I.

What Makes Curse of Vanishing Great:

  • Once equipped, Curse of Vanishing makes the helmet disappear when the player dies/drops it.
  • In combat, the enemy will be unable to pick up enchanted/expensive armor because of its disappearance.

9. Thorns

Certainly one of the least popular helmet enchantments, thorns gives players an extra bit of attacking ability when equipped. With a maximum enchantment level of III, this can be placed on all armor.

What Makes Thorns Great:

  • While wearing a helmet with thorns (or any other armor) players have a 15% chance per level of causing damage to anyone or anything that attacks them.
  • The higher the level the higher the chance of causing damage to enemies.

8. Fire Protection

Although Fire Protection is a rather popular enchantment, it ranks lower on my list because of the other protection enchantments it stacks up against. However, if you are someone who finds yourself around fire often, this might be necessary to add.

What Makes Fire Protection Great:

  • Fire Protection has a maximum level of IV
  • Fire Protection reduces the damage caused by fire and lava.

7. Projectile Protection

The second protection enchantment on my list is Projectile Protection. This enchantment allows for a little more variety than Fire Protection which is why it is placed higher.

What Makes Projectile Protection Great:

  • Once equipped, Projectile Projection reduces damage from projectile attacks. Examples of projectile attacks are arrows, ghast fireballs, and blaze fire charges.
  • Because of the large variety of attacks that it covers, projectile protection can prove useful if you are a player who finds yourself in fights against projectile threats often.

6. Blast Protection

The third protection enchantment on my list is Blast Protection.  Blast Protection protects players from explosions through reduced damage.

What Makes Blast Protection Great:

  • When equipped, this enchantment reduces explosive damage to players.
  • This includes explosions from TNT, creepers, ghasts, ender crystals, and initial explosions from the wither boss.

5. Mending

The first durability enchantment on my list is Mending. A love it or hate it enchantment, Mending provides players with a self-sufficient durability system for longer-lasting armor.

What Makes Mending Great:

  • When equipped, mending uses XP orbs to “mend” your helmet (or armor/tools). Adding durability and longer-lasting effects to your armor.
  • All XP not used for mending will be added to the experience bar for more enchantment points!

4. Aqua Affinity

Coming in at number 4 on my list is aqua affinity. A helmet and cap exclusive enchantment that gives players a special underwater ability. Aqua Affinity has a maximum enchantment level of I.

What Makes Aqua Affinity Great:

  • Once equipped, players' underwater mining speed is increased.
  • Players looking to take on underwater structures will want to equip this enchantment.

3. Respiration

Respiration is another helmet and cap exclusive enchantment. With a maximum level of III, respiration allows players an underwater ability that will prove to be super helpful.

What Makes Respiration Great:

  • Once equipped, respiration allows players to breathe for longer periods of time underwater.
  • The enchantment also aids with underwater visibility, allowing for players to see better underwater.

2. Unbreaking

The highest-ranking durability enchantment on my list is Unbreaking. With a maximum level of III, this enchantment is not exclusive to helmets but does help all armor and weapons last longer.

What Makes Unbreaking Great:

  • When equipped, this enchantment increases the durability of your item.
  • The higher the level (up to III) the longer your helmet will last.

1. Protection

Number 1 on my list and arguably the best enchantment for all armor in Minecraft, is protection. This enchantment encompasses all of the great qualities of the other protection enchantments mentioned and has a maximum level of IV.

What Makes Protection Great:

  • Protection is a comprehensive protection. Meaning that it protects from all types of damage (such as attacks, fire, lava, and falling)
  • Despite it being less effective than the previously mentioned enchantments, it encompasses all of the protections at once. It is truly so helpful.

That concludes my ranking of the top 10 helmet enchantments in Minecraft. While applying enchantments, consider picking out the best ones for your noggin. Keeping that head safe is important especially when it comes to the unpredictable world of Minecraft!
