4. Total Annihilation

Total Annihilation Cinematic Trailer 

If AoE is credited with polishing genre conventions up to that point to create a fantastic game, then Total Annihilation should be revered as the game that pioneered said conventions and the reason RTS looks the way it does nowadays.

Everything from online matches to simply selecting and directing your units appeared first in Total Annihilation. The top-down view helped with the strategic planning and everything this game did right, was soon copied in other games. I’m a big proponent of knowing the greats that made things possible, and I believe this is a game everyone should play at least once.
