Find out which are the best of the best with our Top 10 Terraria best potions and how to get them.

10. Healing Potion

Heals everything from scratches to broken bones!

Healing potions are an RPG staple. They're the most commonly used draught in almost any game. Terraria thrives on the amount of combat it provides, so health pots are always welcome in any player's inventory. Heck, the developers knew that they were always going to be used and assigned a hotkey just for them.

Potion details:

  • Heals you for a certain amount, depending on the quality of the potion

What makes it awesome:

  • Can save you from very dire situations, especially during combat.

9. Recall Potion

Sends you home with a swig of a bottle

Recall potions are a staple when it comes to getting your player home from any situation. If you find yourself lost without a way back, pop a bottle and you'll be sent all the way back to spawn. Recall potions are more effective than Magic Mirrors in many cases. Although the Magic Mirror has infinite usage, the potion warps you home much much faster. Fell into a deep pit? Drink a potion! Triggered a boss fight by accident? Swig that bad boy.

Potion details:

  • Warps you back to your set spawn point almost instantly.

What makes it awesome:

  • Can save you from death if you're quick to react.
  • Faster warp time than a Magic Mirror

How to get recall potions:

  • Drops from some slimes
  • Drops from underground pots
  • Inside wooden and golden chests
  • Brewed with Daybloom, Bottled Water, and a Specular Fish

8. Water Walking Potion

Sounds like a miracle in a bottle

Arguably one of the more useful potions is the Water Walking potion. This potion is especially useful during your first few hours of gameplay in that it allows you to basically stay afloat any liquids. Although it doesn't say it in the tooltip, this potion is so potent that it even lets you walk on lava. Be careful not to press 'down', though, or you'll be in for a very rude awakening. Pack a few bottles of these for exploration and you'll find yourself thanking your preparation senses.

Potion details:

  • Allows you to walk on top of liquids

What makes it awesome:

  • Saves you from falling into lava or from drowning in a deep lake
  • Also works on Honey puddles

How to get water walking potions:

  • Drops from some slimes
  • Drops from underground pots

7. Obsidian Skin Potion

Cover me with obsidian!

There's only one thing that can kill both a newbie and an over-geared player and that's LAVA. There's almost no escape when you accidentally dip your toes in this shiny red pool of imminent death. Drinking a Recall potion is not guaranteed to save you as the damage over time from burning is still there to do you in. That's where the Obsidian Skin potion comes in. Find yourself swimming even in the deepest pits of the underworld with this amazing potion that renders you fireproof from any source. It's also one of the best ways of getting a great amount of hellstone early-game.

  • Makes the player immune to fire debuffs and lava

What makes it awesome:

  • Makes exploring the underworld a breeze
  • Allows you to use lava traps with almost no risk in the overworld

6. Spelunker Potion

Made for the darkest caves

Spelunker potions are often a necessity to advance the game. Although they're not required, their function allows you to progress through your upgrades more efficiently. Spelunker potions make any treasure on the screen glow with a dim yellow. This makes ores, gems, and treasure chests easily visible without the need for light sources. This allows you to easily obtain gems for a hook, life crystals and life fruits for extra health, and underground chests for treasure.

Potion details:

  • Helps the player locate valuable objects

What makes it awesome:

  • Makes mining trips very efficient
  • Allows you to find underground chests with relative ease

How to get spelunker potions:

  • Drops from slimes

5. Lifeforce Potion

The power of life in a bottle!

Getting more health in Terraria is indeed possible with Life Crystals and Life Fruits. That said, the amount of HP they can give you is limited up to a certain degree. Any player can only max out their health to 400 with Life Crystals, and up to 500 after with the use of Life Fruits. But sometimes, having 500 health is not enough. That's why the Lifeforce potion is very effective in giving your health bar that extra push.

Potion details:

  • Increases your max health by 20%

What makes it awesome:

  • Allows you to reach 600 health which is the highest legitimate health in Terraria
  • Adds a dash of survivability to your character

How to get lifeforce potions:

  • Inside lizhard chests and shadow chests
  • Brewed with Shiverthorn, Waterleaf, Moonglow, Bottled Water, and a Prismite

4. Wrath Potion

Let burning wrath consume you!

In a game where combat is inevitable, having that extra boost in damage is always welcome. The Wrath potion adds a flat increase in your overall damage regardless of class. This allows you to dish out your best when it comes to those pesky boss fights. Although it's naturally bound to the Corruption biome, as of 1.4.0.1, you can now buy corruption seeds from the Dryad to make it in any world.

Potion details:

  • Boosts your overall damage by 10%

What makes it awesome:

  • More useful than the Rage potion (crimson) as it does a flat increase in damage to all hits as opposed to an increased critical strike chance

How to get wrath potions:

  • Brewed with Deathweed, Bottled Water, and an Ebonkoi

3. Regeneration Potion

Heals you every second of the day, every day

Although considered to be a low-tier potion, it has its part in the trifecta of potions every player should have for boss fights. The Regeneration potion is crafted from relatively cheap ingredients, making it easy to produce. It heals 2 health per second up to a total of 960 health in 8 minutes. Combined with other regeneration accessories such as the Band of Regeneration and you can heal up to 4 health per second.

Potion details:

  • Gives you a 2 health per second healing buff

What makes it awesome:

  • There are only a few sources of regeneration in the game and all of them stack.

How to get regeneration potions:

  • Drops from slimes
  • Drops from underground pots
  • Found inside chests
  • Brewed with Daybloom, Bottled Water, and a Mushroom

2. Endurance Potion

Makes you as buff as a buff person!

An Endurance potion, like the name implies, gives you reduced damage taken from all sources. This gives a flat 10% damage reduction that stacks with effects such as the Beetle Armor or the Worm Scarf. As we've mentioned in the past, defense is a very important thing in Terraria as survivability greatly correlates to your chances of beating a boss.

Potion details:

  • Gives you a 10% damage reduction buff

What makes it awesome:

  • Stacks with other sources of damage reduction

How to get regeneration potions:

  • Brewed with Blinkroot, Bottled Water, and an Armored Cavefish

1. Ironskin Potion

Gives you skin as hard as metal!

The Ironskin Potion is overall the best potion buff in the game. We placed this above the Endurance potion as nothing can beat a base increase in defense. Another reason would be because there's nothing hard about making this potion at all. Anyone at any point in the game can make this potion as long as they have the right ingredients. This makes it a very versatile buff that carries on all throughout the game.

Potion details:

  • Increases defense by 8

What makes it awesome:

  • 8 defense is nothing to scoff at especially since the only source of defense are armors and shields

How to get regeneration potions:

  • Drops from slimes
  • Drops from underground pots
  • Found inside chests
  • Brewed with Daybloom, Bottled Water, and an Iron/Lead Ore
