[Top 15] M&B 2 Bannerlord Best Troops (And How To Get Them)

A battle taking place in the Aserai desert

15. The Vlandian Sergeant

In combat, I've used Vlandian Sergeants to hold the line while archers shoot from behind, successfully forming a defensive wall that adversaries find impossible to breach. Some players have even utilized them to charge into opposing lines to break formations and cause chaos.

When faced with weakly armored forces, such as archers or other ranged units, their efficiency comes through. Capable of swiftly closing the distance and doing substantial damage before the adversary can respond. They can maintain their position against large soldiers and wear them out because of their superior melee capabilities. Vlandian Sergeants, on the other hand, struggle against highly armored cavalry because they lack the speed and mobility to keep up with them.

Pros of The Vlandian Sergeants:

  • Decent melee attack and defense, which makes them great for holding the line against enemy infantry.
  • Versatile: Vlandian Sergeants can be effective both in offensive and defensive roles. Capable of charging forward and engaging enemy units head-on, or hold a position and repel enemy attacks.

Cons of The Vlandian Sergeants:

  • They struggle against certain types of enemies, however, such as heavily armored cavalry or high-tier infantry units, as their attacks may lack the necessary armor penetration to deal significant damage.
  • They are vulnerable to ranged attacks, especially if caught in the open without cover.

Vlandian Sergeants are a good choice for any Vlandian army, but keep in mind their limits and attempt to supplement them with other units that may cover their deficiencies. Archers or crossbowmen can offer cover fire to defend them from ranged attacks, while cavalry forces can outflank and maneuver the opponent.

  • Fian Champions are the top-tier unit for the Battanian faction, meaning they are some of the most powerful troops in the game overall. They can often turn the tide of a battle and are highly valued for their abilities.

Cons of Battanian Fian Champions:

The Imperial Elite Cataphract, like its historical counterparts in the Byzantine and Persian Empires, is a heavily armored cavalry unit armed with lances and swords, making it a powerful force on the battlefield.

Their high armor and hit points make them very resilient, and their strong lances can dispatch even the most tenacious foes. It's no surprise that they're popular among gamers aiming to dominate the field with their cavalry. They may also rush into hostile formations, smashing opponent lines and generating critical openings.

  • Imperial Elite Cataphracts are armed with lances, which make their charges extremely powerful.
  • These units are versatile on the battlefield, whether you need them to charge headfirst into enemy lines and sow chaos, or hang back and protect your own troops as a defensive unit.

Cons of Imperial Elite Cataphracts:

The Aserai Mameluke Palace Guard is a highly trained heavy infantry corps. They are effective in close combat since they are well armored and equipped.  However, due to their poor movement speed, these troops may be ineffective in fast-paced combat. Furthermore, if not well protected, they might be vulnerable to opponent ranged strikes.

Pros of The Aserai Mameluke Palace Guards:

  • Aserai Veteran Infantry are relatively easy to train compared to some other heavy infantry units in the game, making them a good option for players who are just starting out.

Cons of Aserai Veteran Infantry:

  • Vulnerable to ranged attacks due to their heavy armor and shields, which can slow them down and make them easier to hit.
  • While not the slowest heavy infantry unit in the game, Aserai Veteran Infantry are still relatively slow-moving compared to some other units, which can make it difficult to keep up with faster-moving cavalry or skirmishers.
  • Aserai Veteran Infantry can be expensive to recruit and maintain, which can be a challenge for players who are just starting out or are short on funds.

They are particularly deadly in charges against infantry and archers due to their strong armor and lances. Additionally, they are able to easily outflank and pursue down hostile troops because of their tremendous speed and agility.

The Vlandian Vanguard are frequently used by me as shock soldiers, storming into the opposing lines to disrupt their formations before withdrawing back to regroup and charging once again. They work well in pursuing and stopping enemy troops from regrouping as they escape.

Pros of The Vlandian Vanguards:

  • Equipped with lances, they’re deadly in charge. They have a high charge impact that can easily break through enemy lines and cause significant damage.
  • Highly mobile, making them effective in flanking enemy formations and chasing down retreating units. They can quickly move around the battlefield and strike at vulnerable targets.

Cons of The Vlandian Vanguards:

  • As an elite unit, they are expensive to recruit and maintain. The player needs to have a strong economy to support a large force of Vlandian Vanguard.

  • Heavily armored, highly mobile, and equipped with lances, The Vlandian Vanguard is deadly in charge. Perfect for flanking and chasing down routing enemies. However, they’re vulnerable to ranged attacks, expensive and less effective in prolonged combat.

  • Equipped with heavy armor and a shield making them highly resistant to enemy attacks.
  • The Imperial Legionary can be recruited from a variety of Imperial cities and towns, making them easily accessible for players throughout the game.

Cons of Imperial Legionaries:

  • As a high-tier unit, the Imperial Legionary is more expensive to recruit and maintain than lower-tier units, which can be a significant drain on a player's resources.
  • While the Imperial Legionary is heavily armored and equipped with a shield, they are still vulnerable to high-damage attacks from certain enemy units, such as heavy cavalry or siege weapons.
  • The heavy armor and equipment can slow them down on the battlefield, making it more difficult for them to maneuver or escape from dangerous situations.

In the Imperial troop tree, the Imperial Legionary is a high-tier unit. They are a flexible and potent asset on the battlefield since they are well-suited to melee combat and have substantial armor and a shield. They are susceptible to high-damage strikes and ranged attacks, although they have hefty recruiting and maintenance costs. The Imperial Legionary is a powerful and useful unit, but its usage needs careful control.

7. Khuzait Heavy Horse Archer

In the Khuzait troop tree, the Heavy Horse Archer is a high-tier mounted archer unit. They are expert horse archers with strong composite bows, robust armor, and effective melee skills.

According to my own experience, the Khuzait Heavy Horse Archer is a crucial unit for any Khuzait army since they are capable of offering crucial ranged assistance at a distance and, if required, may fight in close battle. They can harass opposing units from a distance, disorganize formations, and do serious damage thanks to their excellent mobility and ability to shoot while moving.

  • With a high proficiency in archery and access to powerful bows, they can deal significant damage to enemy units from a distance, and are particularly effective against infantry and archers.
  • While the Khuzait Heavy Horse Archer is primarily a ranged unit, they are also skilled in melee combat and can hold their own in close combat against other mounted units or weakened infantry.
  • Equipped with heavy armor, they’re more resilient to enemy attacks. They can withstand a significant amount of damage, especially when compared to other mounted archer units.

Cons of The Khuzait Heavy Horse Archers:

They excel in ranged combat with their high proficiency in archery and access to powerful bows, but are also skilled in melee combat and can hold their own against infantry. Before entering in melee combat, they can cause deadly damage to opposing troops.

The Aserai Mameluke Heavy Cavalry is most effective when utilized as early-battle ranged support and as late-battle shock cavalry to shatter enemy lines and create openings.

Pros of The Aserai Mameluke Heavy Cavalry:

  • Having a high melee combat proficiency, makes them effective in close combat situations. They can take on enemy infantry units and other cavalry units with relative ease.
  • Their heavy armor provides them with extra protection against enemy attacks, letting them stay in combat much longer.
  • Equipped with a one-handed weapon and a bow, making them effective both in melee combat and at range. This gives them more versatility than units that are only proficient in one area.

Cons of The Aserai Mameluke Heavy Cavalry:

  • As a high-tier unit they can be expensive to recruit and maintain. This can be a challenge for players who are struggling to maintain their economy.
  • While the Aserai Mameluke Heavy Cavalry has heavy armor, they can still be vulnerable to ranged attacks. This can be a challenge when facing ranged-heavy armies.

5. Sturgian Heavy Spearman

The Sturgian Heavy Spearman is a high-tier infantry unit that uses long spears to combat opposing infantry and disperse enemy cavalry. It is part of the Sturgian troop tree. They can maintain defensive positions or lead charges in offensive maneuvers since they are well-armored and can resist enemy attacks. They can help other troops or defend archers thanks to their long spears.

Sturgian Heavy Spearmen, in my own experience, have been a useful addition to any army, especially when confronting opposing cavalry or other heavy infantry units. They are also good at defending against enemy charges or controlling chokepoints.

Pros of The Sturgian Heavy Spearmen:

  • Their long spears give them an advantage against enemy cavalry, allowing them to keep them at a distance and prevent them from charging.
  • They can use their spears to engage enemy infantry at a range most one handed weapons can’t reach, and their armor and shields make them well-suited to withstand enemy attacks.
  • Their defensive capabilities make them effective at holding chokepoints or defending strategic positions.
  • With their spears and armor, Sturgian Heavy Spearmen can effectively lead charges into enemy lines.

Cons of The Sturgian Heavy Spearmen:

  • They are not as fast as other infantry units, making them more vulnerable to ranged attacks or flanking maneuvers by faster enemy units.
  • Lack of a ranged weapon option makes them less viable against archers and crossbowmen.
  • They are vulnerable to enemy polearms, which can easily reach and bypass their long spears.

The Sturgian Heavy Spearmen are proficient at holding defensive positions and confronting both enemy cavalry and infantry since they are well-armored and have long spears. They lack ranged weaponry, move more slowly than other infantry units, and are more susceptible to opponent polearms. They are an adaptable and important complement to any force, all things considered.

Official details and stats:

  • Culture: Sturgia
  • Type: Infantry
  • Tier: 5

4. Vlandian Sharpshooter

One of the greatest crossbowmen in the game is the Vlandian Sharpshooter, a high-tier ranged unit in the Vlandian troop tree. They are able to do substantial damage to hostile forces from a distance because of their lethal precision and potent crossbows.

Vlandian Sharpshooters can fire from a distance, but they can also defend themselves in close quarters if necessary with their respectable melee skills.

They serve as ranged support for the rest of the army in combat, eliminating enemy troops from a distance and depleting their numbers before they can reach the front lines. They may also be employed to strike high-value targets like enemy cavalry or siege engines.

To drastically reduce opposing forces before they reach the front lines, I personally like to utilize Vlandian Sharpshooters. Although they are susceptible to melee assaults and may easily be overpowered if left unsupported, they need careful control and protection.

Pros of Vlandian Sharpshooters:

  • One of the best crossbowmen in the game, with a powerful longbow that can deal significant damage to enemy troops.
  • They have high accuracy, allowing them to hit targets from a distance with ease.
  • Decent armor making them more durable than other ranged units.
  • They have decent melee skills, making them capable of defending themselves in close combat if necessary.
  • They can be used to target high-priority targets such as enemy cavalry or siege engines, in addition to providing ranged support to the rest of the army.

Cons of Vlandian Sharpshooters:

  • Crossbows have a longer reload time compared to other ranged weapons, which can limit the Vlandian Sharpshooter's rate of fire.
  • They only carry a single quiver of bolts, which means they may run out of ammo quickly in prolonged battles.
  • While they have decent melee skills, the Vlandian Sharpshooter is still primarily a ranged unit and can be easily overwhelmed by enemy infantry in close combat.
  • They are one of the more expensive units in the game, requiring a significant investment in terms of both recruitment cost and upkeep.
  • To maximize their potential, players need to be skilled at managing their formation and positioning, as well as knowing when to switch between ranged and melee combat.

They are effective against both infantry and cavalry because of their vast range and superb precision. The limitations of these weapons include their lengthy reload times, few ammo supplies, vulnerability in close quarters, high maintenance costs, and high skill requirements for efficient usage. They are essential members of Vlandian armies since they help them from a distance and annoy the adversary.

Official details and stats:

  • Culture: Vlandia
  • Type: Crossbowmen
  • Tier: 5
  • Upgrades from: Vlandian Hardened Crossbowman
  • Skills: One Handed 130, Two Handed 60, Polearm 80, Bow 20, Crossbow 130, Throwing 60, Riding 80, Athletics 130

3. Imperial Elite Menavliaton

A high-tier heavy infantry unit in the Imperial troop tree, the Imperial Elite Menavliaton is renowned for its mastery of the menavlion, a long-reaching polearm. They can hold the line against opposing forces because of their strong armor, which makes them ideal for frontline battle. They are also effective against both cavalry and infantry in one-on-one combat due to their strong armor rating and melee skill.

My armies' frontline troops, the Imperial Elite Menavliaton, have always been able to inflict substantial damage with their long spears and swords. Prior to moving in for melee combat, they may effectively eliminate opponent ranged troops because of their pila. They are also quite tough in battle due to their massive armor and hit points.

Pros of the Imperial Elite Menavliations:

  • The menavlion is a powerful polearm that can deal high damage to enemies in close combat.
  • The pila can be used to damage enemies from range, making the unit versatile in both melee and ranged combat.
  • The Imperial Elite Menavliaton has good armor and hit points, making them durable in battle.
  • The unit has good morale, making them less likely to break in battle and more likely to rally allies.

Cons of the Imperial Elite Menavliations:

  • While the unit is heavily armored, they do not have shields and are vulnerable to ranged attacks such as arrows and javelins.
  • Due to their heavy armor and weaponry, the Imperial Elite Menavliaton have slower movement speed compared to lighter units, which can make them vulnerable to flanking or being outmaneuvered.
  • While the pila can be effective against enemy shields and infantry, the unit's lack of dedicated ranged weapons limit their ability to engage enemies at range.

High-level infantry group the Imperial Elite Menavliaton is renowned for its devastating javelins and polearms. They are adaptable on the battlefield because of their excellent armor, strong melee, and respectable ranged powers. However, they are susceptible to cavalry charges and somewhat sluggish. They frequently serve as a frontline soldier in charge as well as a powerful defense line for my ranged troops in my armies.

Official details and stats:

  • Culture: Northern Empire, Western Empire, Southern Empire
  • Type: Infantry
  • Tier: 5
  • Upgrades from: Imperial Menavliaton
  • Skills: One Handed 130, Two Handed 80, Polearm 130, Bow 60, Crossbow 40, Throwing 80, Riding 20, Athletics 130

2. Khuzait Marksman

The Khuzait Marksman is a high-tier, archery-focused ranged unit in the Khuzait army tree. They are armed with a powerful recurve bow and a collection of steppe arrows, allowing them to deliver heavy damage at a distance. They also wield a one-handed saber and have a respectable grasp of melee combat.

Their function in combat is to help the Khuzait army from a distance with ranged arrows, pelting the opposition with arrows from a secure distance. They have considerable mobility because of the light armor they are wearing, but it also leaves them open to hostile strikes.

I think the Khuzait Marksman is a great asset to any army since they can inflict a lot of damage to opposing units even before they approach their own lines.

Pros of Khuzait Marksmen:

  • Have a powerful bow that can deal significant damage to enemies from a distance.
  • Compared to other ranged units, the Khuzait Marksman has a relatively fast reload time, allowing them to fire arrows more quickly.
  • A fast and nimble unit, allowing them to quickly move around the battlefield and avoid enemy attacks.
  • The Khuzait Marksman has high proficiency in archery, which makes them deadly accurate with their bow.

Cons of Khuzait Marksmen:

  • Like all ranged units, Khuzait Marksmen are vulnerable to melee attacks, especially from heavily armored enemies who can close the distance quickly.
  • They carry a limited amount of arrows, and once they run out, they are forced to engage in melee combat or retreat. This can make them less effective in prolonged engagements.

The Khuzait Marksman is a ranged weapon that specializes at providing significant distance damage. They can swiftly move across the battlefield to find the ideal fire locations because of their minimal armor and quick movement. They are a crucial asset to any army because of their potent recurve bow's ability to swiftly dispatch enemy forces.

Official details and stats:

  • Culture: Khuzait
  • Type: Archer
  • Tier: 5
  • Upgrades from: Khuzait Archer
  • Skills: One Handed 130, Two Handed 60, Polearm 80, Bow 130, Crossbow 20, Throwing 60, Riding 80, Athletics 130

1. Vlandian Banner Knight

The Vlandian Banner Knight is a powerful cavalry unit that can be found in the Vlandian troop tree. It is well-trained, well armored, and skilled in the use of swords, lances, and shields. They are one of the most powerful cavalry troops available, with strong riding and fighting skills in addition to superior armor and weapons.

The Banner Knight is a fantastic choice for those that like a cavalry-focused gaming experience. Due to their tremendous charge, they may easily disorganized opponent formations and cause havoc in their rear lines. They also have a high degree of resilience because to their shield and armor, which allows them to withstand opponent attacks and fight for a long time.

Pros of Vlandian Banner Knights:

  • Banner Knights have high melee skill, making them effective in close combat.
  • They are heavily armored, making them durable and able to withstand significant damage.
  • They can perform a devastating charge, dealing significant damage to enemy troops.
  • They are well-trained in the use of lances, swords, and shields, making them versatile and effective in a variety of combat situations.
  • High riding skill, allowing them to move quickly across the battlefield and maneuver around enemy troops.

Cons of Vlandian Banner Knights:

  • Banner Knights are expensive to train and maintain, making them a significant investment in terms of both time and resources.
  • Vulnerable to ranged attacks, particularly from archers or crossbowmen.
  • It can be difficult to field large numbers of Banner Knights due to their cost and the time required to train them.
  • Vulnerable to spears, particularly in tight formations or in terrain that limits their mobility.
  • While Banner Knights can deal significant damage on their own, they are limited in their ability to support slower-moving infantry units.

I believe that the Vlandian Banner Knight is one of the best cavalry units in the game. Their high melee and riding skill, along with their heavy armor and powerful charge, make them extremely effective in close combat. As a player who enjoys a cavalry-focused playstyle, I find them to be one of my go-to units when playing as the Vlandians.

However, their high cost and vulnerability to ranged attacks make them a strategic choice that requires careful management. I find that using Banner Knights effectively requires a skilled commander who can protect them from ranged attacks and coordinate their movements on the battlefield. Additionally, while they can be devastating in a charge, they are vulnerable to spears and can be limited in their ability to support slower-moving infantry units.
