7. XCOM 2

Gameplay from a heavily modded Xcom 2 campaign

XCOM 2 is another classic game that has been re-done and is better than ever. It’s a sequel, but also a perfectly fine starting point for new players. In this turn-based tactics sci-fi game you are once again the commander of the XCOM military organization. You are fighting as a resistance force against an alien race that has occupied Earth. It is your job to manage your team’s classes (Soldier, Grenadier, Ranger etc.), upgrade their skills, plan your attack, and respond to the enemies counter attack.

XCOM 2 also receives support from Steam’s mod Workshop, which means it’s a breeze to customize. The best mods available for XCOM 2 are ones that allow you to customize your gear and squad, ones that make changes to the AI, and others provide general quality of life tweaks. Other modding options include changing the UI, adding co-op play, or even making the game more like Final Fantasy in its playstyle. But of course, as with the other games in this article, it’s fun to mod-outside-the-box and install some awesome franchise-crossing files too!

Heroes never die! And neither does the fun of cross-game mods.

Here is an example of some of the cool customization that’s possible in XCOM 2 with mods. Oh, and look there’s Tali from Mass Effect 2.
