Captain Marvel 2019: Ten Interesting Facts about the Upcoming Movie

Captain Marvel interesting facts
What do we know about Captain Marvel so far?

What do we know about the upcoming Captain Marvel?

Captain Marvel had many different forms in the past. This time, the mantle goes to Carol Danvers, the first female superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that has its own movie. In the comic books, she gains her superpowers by mixing her DNA with that of a Kree alien. And I’m talking about some serious super powers: she can fly, she has super strength, she shoots energy bursts from her hands and she has enhanced durability. How will all that fit in with the rest of the Marvel Universe? The movie will be released on the 8th of March 2019 right between the two “Infinity War” films. I’m sure that will have a little something to do with her origin story. We shall wait and see. ‘Till then, let’s take a look at the ten most interesting facts about the upcoming movie.

10. Captain Marvel started as Ms. Marvel

   Carol Danvers as Ms. Marvel

Interestingly enough, before becoming Captain Marvel, our female protagonist was first introduced in the Marvel Universe as Ms. Marvel. The term “Ms.”  was becoming very popular in the society. Married women were differentiated from single women by the terms “Mrs.” or “Miss”. By using only “Ms.” women are being given an alternative. Now they could be classified as independent women. It seems that Ms. Marvel had quite a heavy burden on her shoulders already. She was a feminist superhero, meant from the very beginning to empower women.

9. The film will focus more on character development rather than super powers

Captain Marvel has extraordinary superpowers. She was already an amazing pilot and a capable military officer. Her superpowers only managed to enhance her abilities, including super strength and flying, having a velocity that is faster than the speed of sound. Also, she displays impressive control of energy projection that allow her to create energy blasts. How can a character this powerful fit in the MCU? The producers decided to focus more on her character, showing her emotional struggles, making her more relatable and allowing the audience to connect with her on a personal level. (This is why we love the Marvel movies so much).

8. Her role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

There's a total of 67 characters in "Avengers: Infinity Wars"

In the comic books, Captain Marvel was affiliated to different superhero groups. She fought alongside superhero organizations from Earth and from across the galaxy. After “Avengers: Infinity Wars” it is rumored that a large number of our favorite superheroes will find their end, so the Marvel Cinematic Universe needs to go in a different direction, having new characters that will be as interesting as the former ones. Considering Captain Marvel’s comic book background, she might turn out to be the link between the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy in future instalments.

7.The directors of the film

Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck have Captain Marvel covered

There have been many speculations regarding the directors. Angelina Jolie was rumored for a while to be in discussions with helming this film. Instead, Kevin Feige chose another duo with no experience in blockbuster films. But we trust him! He did the same with the Russo brothers, and now they’re directing the “Avengers: Infinity Wars” movies. And they’ve done great with the “Captain America” films. But enough about them, the new duo we are talking about is made of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. They are known for indie films like Ryan Gosling’s “Half Nelson”. Feige considered that they are the most appropriate directors to bring out the human side of the character. And isn’t that the Marvel way that we all love and adore? That in spite of all the screen spectacle these movies have, we can still empathize with the main characters?

6. There have been eight Captain Marvels

The original Captain Marvel was a male Kree. His species is being revealed in the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films. This alien went by the name of Mar-Vell. The movie will only focus on Carol Danvers. She was in the Marvel Universe since 1968 as Ms. Marvel and became Captain Marvel in 2012. There has been a number of women who took over the mantle of Ms. Marvel after Danvers. Characters like Sharon Ventura, Karla Sofen, and the most recent one, Kamala Khan. She is the first Muslim character to ever headline in a Marvel comic book.

5. Different origin story

Carol Danvers turning into a Super Saiyan

Carol Danvers gains her powers from the alien Mar-Vell. She accidentally fuses her DNA with his, achieving extraordinary powers. The studios recently reported that the origin story in the movie will be slightly different, in order to avoid similarities with “Green Lantern”. I think her transformation will have more to do with gem stones than DNA fusion. Or maybe Vision might have something to do with it. Who knows? We shall wait and see.

4. The first Marvel Cinematic Universe female superhero

Look out Black Widow, there's a new fan favorite coming to town

Kevin Feige considers Captain Marvel as the strongest superhero in the MCU. She is at the heart of the Marvel Universe. Fans were pushing for a Black Widow film for many years, and it still hasn’t been announced. But everyone was happy of the opportunity a Captain Marvel movie can bring. We might be looking at a future with more successful female superhero leads (“Wonder Women” anyone? Did you see it?)

3.She was originally going to be in the “Jessica Jones” Netflix show.

 Trish Walker in "Jessica Jones"

Carol Danvers was going to play the role of Jessica Jones’s confidante and ally in the series. She would help the main protagonist to fight against Kilgrave. Eventually, she was replaced by Trish Walker and turned out to be a more appropriate choice for the role. Walker has no superpowers and that makes a better chemistry between the characters.

2. Brie Larson is going to play the lead

 Brie Larson as Captain Marvel

Brie Larson is an amazing actress. She recently won an Oscar for her role in “Room”. I’m sure she will bring the right amount of depth to the character and also be entertaining. She is the perfect choice for what Kevin Feige is looking for and the direction he wants for the Marvel Cinematic Universe to head towards. Captain Marvel will have a lot on her shoulders in the future instalments and Brie Larson looks just like the type that can handle the pressure.

1. She will make her debut in “Avengers: Infinity Wars”

Can you see where Captain Marvel is?

It has been confirmed that Captain Marvel will make her debut in “Avengers: Infinity Wars”, probably the same way as Spider-Man and Black Panther did in “Civil Wars”. We don’t know much of her role in the upcoming blockbuster movie. It might help to set a great part of her origin story. It has been announced that a number of 67 characters will appear in “Infinity Wars”. Will she have only a small part in the battle? The “Captain Marvel” movie is set to appear between the two “Infinity Wars” films. Perhaps her role will be more influential through her continuity.

So, superhero fans from all over the world, feminists and Marvel geeks, I share your excitement. I believe this will be an amazing film and she will be a great character. It will be a fresh direction for the Marvel Cinematic Universe and I think we all agree that Captain Marvel is the perfect frontrunner.
