5. Valkyria Chronicles
Say hello to Squad 7!
Sure, it may feature a cast of googly-eyed, tiny-mouthed anime characters with impeccable hair, but Valkyria Chronicles is as intense, and as heartbreaking, as any real war story. Set in an alternate universe eerily resembling Europe circa World War II, this epic involves the continent of Europa, which has been embroiled in a bloody war between the tyrannical East European Imperial Alliance and the loose alliance of democratic nations known as the Atlantic Federation.
You assume the role of Welkin Gunther, commander of Squad 7 – a group of soldiers eager to fight off the Imperial forces. Also in your control is the mighty Edelweiss, a prototype tank that survived the previous war.
Valkyria Chronicles is a turn-based, tactical strategy game. It has players maneuvering their units through a variety of locations, from small villages and large cities to dust-strewn canyons and riverside grasslands. Objectives are diverse, ranging from capturing an enemy base to destroying the Godzilla of tanks – an armored monster so enormous it’s basically a fortress on treads. Completing a mission takes teamwork, which means exploiting the expertise of every unit at your disposal. So even if the Edelweiss is powerful, you’ll still need the help of your snipers, engineers, and machine gunners.
The game is also a pleasure to look at, with graphics meant to simulate watercolor on canvas. The result? A gorgeous, moving painting.
Once exclusive to the PlayStation 3, this beloved, critically acclaimed game is now available for the PC. One of the most memorable tank games you’ll ever play!
It'll take more than your peashooter to put a dent on that tank, love
