Looking for the best first person shooter games in 2017? Look no further...

The FPS is a dominating genre in gaming. In terms of immersion, the first person shooter allows gamers to experience the action at a personal level that no other genre can quite match. Arguably, the most popular FPS’s are the reflexed based style shooters like CS GO and Call of Duty.

Outside of providing near unlimited hours of gameplay, FPS’s today offer competition for those who would seek it and glorious (and often violent) escapism for anyone who plays. The games on this list exemplify those aspects of the FPS.

For some it’s the cooperative challenge of mowing down legions of mutants, zombies and Xenos scum with 1-3 of your buddies that qualifies it. For others, it’s the contest of arena combat that will warrant a games popularity for the year to come. Whichever style fits you, these 10 FPS’s will be worth a look now and well into 2017.

10. Verdun

Verdun Free "Horrors of War" Expansion Trailer

Verdun is an epic World War 1 FPS game taking place in the years of 1914 to 1918 on the Western Front.

The game is the first FPS game to ever be set in World War 1, and will take players into one of the bloodiest wars in history.

Verdun's uniqueness comes with its highly realistic gameplay which lets players experience what it was like for soldiers battling in the trenches of World War 1.

Weapons available include rifles, pistols, light machine guns, grenades and melee weapons like trench knives.

Up to a total of 32 players are allowed in a game as they battle for their country and honor and players can play as soldiers from 8 different squads, each squad with its own special attacks.

Verdun offers 4 game-modes: Frontlines, Attrition, Rifle Deathmatch, and Squad Defense.

9. Quake Champions

Quake Champions Announcement Trailer

Quake Champions is an upcoming Arena FPS from ID and Bethesda. Combining some of the best elements of class based FPS’s like Overwatch and Team Fortress 2 and putting them into the rocket jumping, gauntlet wearing world of Quake, Quake Champions wants to challenge games like Overwatch at its own… well, game. While actual details are sparse, Bethesda’s recent successes point to a promising game when Quake Champions is released sometime in 2017.

8. Battlefield 1

Battlefield 1 Announcement Trailer

Battlefield 1 is the surprisingly successful (and good) World War One FPS released by EA and Dice this last November. Treating players to a 300-esque version of WWI history, the game follows several warriors during the tumultuous final years of the “War to end all wars”. This being a battlefield game, the single player campaign is only an appetizer to a superb multiplayer experience that has come to be the norm for the makers of Battlefield 3 and Bad Company 2.

What ensures Battlefield One’s place as a top FPS in 2017 is that there will be no other Battlefield Game in 2017. Dice has confirmed there will be no new Battlefield next year. This means the several DLC packs that have been promised for those who want to keep the action fresh will last longer and ensure gamers are getting their money’s worth.

7. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Trailer

What more can be said about the yearly Call of Duty game that hasn’t been said? Whether you love them or hate them, the Call of Duty games are the standard on which all other “tactical” FPS’s are based. This year’s model includes future tech and a very angry John Snow trying to take over space (for… reasons).

New multiplayer features include selectable missions before each match and more specialized “rigs” for the player to choose from. Beyond that, it’s the same ole’ twitch shooter that you’ve come to ignore or consign yourself to “upgrading” every year. Of course, the real saving factor here is the newest Zombie mode, this one with an 80’s theme and the Hoff making an appearance.

6. Killing Floor 2

Killing Floor 2 Launch Trailer

Killing Floor started as a Mod for Unreal Tournament 2004 that spawned its own game and now Sequel, the aptly titled Killing Floor 2. Developed by Tripwire, Story wise, Killing Floor 2 follows an outbreak of mutated clones that are attacking the EU and you are part of a group of survivors who are simply trying to survive… by killing thousands upon thousands of zomb… I mean clones.

The game's hallmarks include gratuitous gibing using a dismemberment system that sets 22 individual points on each enemy’s body that can be blown or cut off, varied and unique weapons, improved melee combat, a perk system and community support for Mods. Considering how popular the original Killing Floor was it is easy to see why this co-operative horde mode on steroids is going to be a top FPS of 2017.
