Top 10 Horror Movies of 2017



Every year we look forward to see how much has changed since the days of the Exorcist and other slasher films. We look for something refreshing, that will scare us, keep us thinking and most importantly give us sleepless nights. Here is a look at the Top 10 horror movies of 2017, that you must watch or to soon look out for.

10. It comes at night

A post - apocalyptic horror film of two families together only to fall apart. Set in the wake of a mysterious plague like outbreak that has wiped out human civilization, this movie speaks of a family who has isolated themselves in the woods, away from the world. The characters are driven by distrust and desperation. There are strict rules, like eating together, traveling in pairs and the door is always locked after sunset. Everything changes when a stranger enters the house and the Patriarch of the house who lives there with his partner and son, is forced to join forces with the intruder. Turns out, that we can fight the demons outside with weapons but it is what comes from within that threatens to tear the family apart.​

9. ​Flatliners

The past always haunts you

An upcoming American science fiction thriller and tells the story of five medical students who attempt to conduct an experiment that explores the realm of near death experiences, hoping to gain an insight into the afterlife. Each have their heart stopped (hence Flatline) and then revived, to regale their tale of their glimpse into the afterlife. But this only opens a Pandora’s box as they are haunted by the sins of their past and childhood trauma that physically wear them down.

8. Get Out

​The story revolves an interracial relationship between Chris and Rose, who head off over the weekend to ‘meet the parents’. Rose’s parents live in their upstate New York mansion with their rich ‘white’ friends where their host their annual Armitage bash. But when you realize there is something wrong with the racial divide in this little town. Chris immediately feels out of place and that’s when the narration follows a ghastly direction. This movie has a racial undertone along with a hint of humor and is sure to make you think and scare you. 

7. ​Annabelle: Creation

She’s back and it could not have been any sooner. We all remember the Annabelle doll from The Conjuring, then she got her own movie in Annabelle; a story about a possessed doll, taken from the files of Demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren. Annabelle: Creation tells the story of a Dollmaker and his wife, who several years after the tragic death of their little girl, welcome a nun and several girls from a shuttered orphanage into their home. Soon Annabelle sets her eyes on the girls and the turns the home into a house of horror. Scheduled for release soon, we definitely can’t wait to see this fourth installment in the Conjuring series.

6. Alien: Covenant

Ridley Scot is back and this time with Alien: Covenant and is a direct sequel to Prometheus and also provides a critical link to the original 'Alien' story. As with Prometheus, this movie seems to hint at the relation between the creator and creation and tries to bring in a subtle spiritual dimension that questions the nature of creation. 

5. It

An upcoming horror film based on Stephen King’s novel of the same name. This movie tells the story of seven children traumatized by a clown that exploits their fears and phobias in order to prey on them. It primarily appears in the form a clown that looks like a cross between ‘The Joker’ from the Dark Knight and The Grinch. If you suffer from Coulrophobia you might want to think twice, then again, you could face your fears!​

4. Jeepers Creepers 3

This film will continue the story from where it last left off, with Trish having lost her brother to the Creeper, she now has a son but is haunted by nightmares that her son might soon suffer the same fate in the hands of the Creeper. So she sets off on a mission to find the Creeper and end his reign of terror.

3. Leatherface

An upcoming horror film and is the eighth film in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise. This movie is a prequel to the 1974’s original Texas Chainsaw Massacre and explains the origin of Leatherface, the lead character in the movie. Th film follows the escape of four mental patients from an institution, one of whom become Leatherface, and is pursued by local lawmen after the kidnap of a nurse.​

2. God Particle

An upcoming American science fiction horror film and is the third installment in the ‘Cloverfield’ universe. The story tells of a group of scientists sent out to space to test out a new Higgs Boson “God” particle accelerator, that might be the key to humanities survival, especially when there is threat of war between the United states and the European Union back on earth and the ever looming danger of an alien invasion. The experiment fails and the earth seemingly disappears once the instrument is switched on; and now lost the crew must fight to survive, only to be contacted by an enemy crew which gives them hope but almost immediately turns tragic. The space station crew must fight for survival following their horrific discovery. 

1. Tragedy Girls

A comedy horror film directed by Tyler MacIntyre, tells the tale of two bff’s who are out to attain social media stardom by blogging about a murder spree in their town. But with no one paying attention to their blog and the original killer now held hostage, the girls decide to continue from where the killer left off. The dark humor provides a refreshing relief to the slasher films of the past. This movie is a take on today’s age and time and shows what want for fame on social media can drive people (who seem normal on the outside) to do.
